I know it's not retro, but I've been playing IV for a while. It was quite enjoyable, though same things happen to me as they did in II (which was the first one I played and it was awesome), and that's that my monster finally gets kind of strong and then dies of old age.

emulators that arn't mednafen work with the CD swapping mechanic completely. epsxe or whatever you want to try usually work if they are a dedicated playstation emulator. Also on a computer or a ps2 you can even use disks or iso that couldnt work on the playstation.

Pretty much every monster rancher has their appeal but monster rancher 2 is considered the best.

I remember trying this a long time ago but I believe you actually need cd's for this and I ran out of extras. I am also pretty sure you can't actually control what stats or attacks you can start your monster off with through this.

the ds game has some of the worst parts of mr 1 with mr 2

like mr1 most of the mandatory things you need to make a good monster are locked behind tournaments which means your first few monsters are going to suck period regardless of how well you plan out their training.

There are also various bugs but are much worse than any of the mr2 bugs, there is a way to permanently prevent your cartridge from unlocking monsters even if you start a new game.

Despite those issues it still is a rather solid game, essentially being a modern remake of mr1/2 with a lot of improvements.

I never got into this series because your monsters get old and die, and it's sad

Tried Advance 2, my monster got kinda strong, won a couple tournaments without even using savestates (!) and then when I get fond of him he dies. Man that sucks

How does CD monster creation work on an emulator? Not at all? Can i just make dudes with codes or something somehow or can the psx emu read discs in my pc disc drive? I don't have my ps1 right now and i want to play these games again, it's been like ten years

It always made my autism sore that whoever is in charge of the Monster Rancher wiki puts fanart where the normal images should be.

I didn't like DS much. Characters were way too cheesy, art direction was kind of bad and the 3D models for some monsters (Lilith) were terrible. Also the game felt kinda buggy

Must add that my only prior experience was Advance 2 and enjoyed it tons
