Second post best post. It has some neat stuff but it also suffers from the same problem all CD-based systems prior to the PlayStation had: a lot of devs couldn't really figure out what to do with the CD storage other than make FMV games or port over CD-based point-and-clicks from the PC.

If we got more of the NTSC-J stuff id say it was alright stll no match for the PC ENGINE CD though, but the PAL/NTSC-U libraries were pretty weak outside of the goodies here and there.

The tunes were the best part, a lot of composers went ham when they didn't have to work around the genesis sound chip.

I mean listen to this, I rented this and spent half the time waiting for a giant schmup boss to roll onto the screen:

The best Sega CD games were the ones that were basically just MD games with delicious CD audio, wish more retro throwbacks would emulate that style instead of relying on chiptunes. It was pretty awful for FMV playback though.

Yes, if purely for the soundtrack on the SMT1 port. Here's my favourites (I recommend comparing to the original SFC versions to see how nuts they went with the CD versions):

It looks like it could be the second best version of the game, just missing out to the PS1 port.

Both have smooth scrolling, although the Sega version is apparently quite janky. They both have remixed soundtracks, the Sega versions being some really interesting remixes of the original tracks while the PS1 ver. sounds like a shitty downgrade from the SFC tracks.

The Sega version has these weird ass character portraits, but they also redrew all the backgrounds and some of them look super nice. I recommend the hardcoregaming101 page on SMT1 for comparison screenshots.

There's the page I'm talking about. And from top to bottom the SFC, Sega CD, and GBA (based on the PS1) versions of the protagonists house interior. The CD version looks the nicest, but the PS1/GBA version seems more in line with what the original intended.

>> No.4297467

I have one. Got quite a few games for it. Shining Force, Lunar 1 and 2, vay, Dark Wizard, Wolfchild, Final Fight, Soul Star, Dungeon Explorer, Terminator, Time Gal, Battlecorps, Road Avenger, Mickey Mainia. Tons of good games actually. The good ones are way too fucking expensive though. Still want Popful Mail and Snatcher but thats never going to happen.

Yes. Not all of the games were "FMV only" as the Nintendrones would want you to beLIEve.

The music and voice acting were nice touches back then. The Video was god awful and so were most of the games.
Overall, my least favorite system from Sega that I own. I would rather play game gear games.

>> No.4302150

No, it was over engineered due to limitations of the expansion port. So much that it makes the Saturn and PS3 look well designed.

If they made it not an expansion, but as a built-in part of the a Megadrive 2, then it could've had much stronger hardware and far, far less complex design that not only makes it cheaper to make, but also easier to program for. And they could've addressed the palette too, while tackling the whole low user base problem.

Hell, if all they do is make scaling work native in the VDP (a feature they planned in '88 but dropped due to cost), making it run 60fps, it would've already been a beast and almost as good as the 32x in 3d.
