I'm too stupid to repair this, but basically need it repaired and recapped, all that to make it usable again after being in storage for 10+ years. Can anyone here recommend someone or somewhere? All I'm finding is how to guides but I don't want to fuck it up.

Just emulate at this point. Sega CDs were built like shit, even if you get it running again there's a good chance of something else crapping out. And all that relies on your disks still being readable.

Remember, RECAPPING IS A MEME. Secondly, 99% of problems with the Sega CD come from the rubber band or the mechanical eject/drive mount functions.

OP here, it might be the rubber band for sure. Probably should have mentioned this, but I did turn it on and the disc tray immediately made that grinding noise and I turned it off. I just want to get it repaired get this working again.

I'd recommend not wasting time nor money on that POS.

Sell it to some mug for "spares or repair" and get yourself a far superior Model 2.

wew lad

Model 2s just avoid the tray issue but they have the same weak electronics. He should get an X'Eye or Wondermega.

>>4289535
I'm sure someone you know can repair the tray for you. If it boots into its bios the caps are fine for now. Someone will charge you at least $50 and probably $70+ to recap it when and if you actually do need it done. You can find people with good reviews at this stuff on Amazon and even eBay but people on forums work cheaper if you can figure out a forum.

There's a dude who recaps TurboGrafx CD's, I think he also does Sega CD Model 1.

Not sure why the fuck there's posts on here saying recapping is a meme and not to waste your time. People on /vr/ are fucking stupid.

Here you go OP:
Just request he replace the rubber band in the disc tray too.

100% positive feedback and for 50 bucks, you can't beat it.

For a board about retro collecting, telling people not to bother with their original consoles is the only fucking meme here.

Also, recommending the wondermega or x'eye when those are stupidly expensive is also retarded when he can pay 50 bucks for a recap and new band.

>> No.4289789

>>4289779
Do you have a recommendation of where he can send it to have it recapped and his belt replaced for $50? Now that I check prices I retract my suggestion on getting an X'Eye I figured that one with DRE would be less than $100 and the lasers are cheap.

>> No.4289794

>>4289789
I think this guy may be able to do the belt, may not. But 50 for a recap alone is great.

Yeah, good working x'eye's are like 400 dollars. Ridiculous.

>> No.4290061

Even DRE ones are like $300 I bought mine off a girl I know at the used game shop as a console only "non-working" for $20 not THAT long ago, 2011 maybe. The guy who traded it in said it didn't work and she didn't feel like testing it.

Definitely the rubber band, and thankfully a super easy fix.

It's not a board about collecting, it's a board about games. If you want to collect old hardware that's your choice but it's not necessary at all for playing the games.

Where do you live?
If you're in Vancouver I know a guy who recaps consoles for $50 maplebucks.

>> No.4290578

>>4290440
Well, I suppose recapping might be a meme in the sense that it is the ubiquitous pcb repair for retro video game systems but the phrase "xxx is a meme" has come to imply something is somehow invalid just because it's widely believed.

Blowing tons of money on ebay doesn't suddenly make you an expert of something.

lol I spent probably under $150 total on all that shit, almost half of which was for PDS brand new off the shelf.

Actually that's my original Genesis too which I got new so more like $250 I guess.

>> No.4291089

What does pds mean? Because new that's like 600$ worth of games and almost 400 for the genesis and a sega cd.

I recently got a broken model 1 Mega CD, and there is no way recapping is a meme. Every single SMD cap was leaking. Some even damaged the traces. Every single one, even on Mega Drive - Mega CD connector PCB.

Same with PC Engine DUO I own. Every single cap was leaking.

OP here, I messaged that ebay guy, asked if he can replace the belt, this is what he said:

"No as it is a very tedious process and you can easily damage the unit. I would suggest a computer repair shop that deals with older cd drives as they will be able to help you the best."
