Having just played through it again recently I actually have to sat it's my favorite episode. All the levels are pretty great and simple to navigate actually. I actually think it's better than episode one. People like to complain about the sentry drones but if you use the pistol it spins them in place so they can't fly at you. If you use the pistol for the drones the whole episode is great.

I do hate sentry drones, but only in the surprise situations(around corners, JUST past a door, etc.). I have not heard of the pistol trick though, so I'll try that next time(usually always use the ripper on them if I can switch fast enough).

Very linear, sometimes stupidly-complicated maps, little enemy variety. Just an all-round boring experience.

It WAS great though. I won't say it doesn't deserve a place in gaming history because it does, but it can stay there and gather dust.

Duke has better enemy variety than quake. Duke probably has the best set of enemies out of most retro fps games. It's better than vanilla doom but not quite as large as doom 2s cast

>> No.4284787

>>4284758
Not all levels are linear. The very first level definitely isn't. And wtf, how are they "stupidly-complicated"? Especially how can they be supposedly linear but also stupidly-complicated? I've never heard someone, in modern day or the past, complain that the maps were stupidly complicated. I agree the enemies aren't groundbreaking but there's definitely variety and how to approach them differs. The weapons are quite varied and some being unique even to this day; this along with the good level design just doesn't make it a boring experience to me.

>> No.4284802

>The weapons are quite varied and some being unique even to this day
I agree. The pipe bombs, shrink ray, and freeze thrower are all pretty unique from other weapons in games prior.

>> No.4284805

>>4284802
Not the guy you are replying too but a lot of people on here seem to write off the freeze thrower as just a projectile machine gun when in fact being able to bounce the projectiles off the wall is a huge advantage there a few spots in the game that even set you up with a mirror to make it even easier. Its really useful for engaging enemies indirectly and people don't give it enough credit for that

I personally find that semi-realistic level design isn't all that special. Its still at the end of the day, abstract level design, just with a few extra details to represent something familiar.

If I want something that looks familiar, I'd rather it go all the way with realism, and evoke a lived-in feeling. Thief 2 does this pretty well.

I beat Duke3D when I was 9 on my Dad's computer playing after school before he got home from work so he never found out. Git gud.

>> No.4285103

Lunar Apocalypse is great for its own reasons.

It has the sickest level layouts, level architecture and effects use. The fact that the episode isn't routed in realism meant they were able to go wild.

It's anything but "generic".

>> No.4285105

I agree with OP

Duke Nukem's appeal was that it had a relatively convincing urban environment, as opposed to Doom's sci-fi/hell environment. Doom II had some city levels, but they weren't really like a city (but were creepy and cool in their own way)

all three episodes of Duke3d should have been cities. episode 2 was just like more Doom and I didn't play it much compared to ep 1 & 3.

No way the space levels in the space stations feel epic in scale especially when you look out the windows and see how big it is. And the alien fusion station is so cool. It doesn't feel like doom at all. The episode doesn't feel like doom at all. It's nice to have on episode that isn't a city.

Great episode, but too many levels. Incubator is just a weaker Warp Factor. Tiberius Station is just a weaker Lunar Reactor. Overlord (the level) is utter crap. The secret levels are just funstuff, non canonic.

It should have been like this:
Spaceport
Warp Factor
Fusion Station as a secret level
Lunar Reactor
Dark Side
Occupied Territory as a boss level

Episode 2 sucks because when you remove the titties and real world interactive bits all that's left is shooting shitty hitscan gimmick enemies with gimmick weapons, and it gets old fast. The game is packed full of movie refs and novelty shit like the electric chair and shrinking sections for a reason.

Wtf if anything using the pistol on them is the opposite of gimping yourself go try it for yourself they can't do anything to you. You always have max ammo for that thing cause it hardly ever gets used the devs actually gave it a use. That's actually brilliant game design making the starter weapon still useful. Pistol stun locks it due to its fire rate. I thought that is how most people took them out if they used any weapons. Same with the protozoid eggs/protozoids since you have a bunch of pistol ammo and it is actually, you know, good, and is never actually replaced.

It's the most autistic episode in the game. One of the things that made Duke better than literally every other FPS yet was that it at least tried to make levels that feel like real places. But EP2 is just space station alien dungeon autism. EP3 has some pretty autistic levels too, but not as bad as EP2.

he probably means that more abstract, "doomlike" levels are more autistic, since they lack the human dimension.

personally I disagree. I thought episode two had some of the most beautiful scenery in the game. they really managed to capture the outer space feel in all the details, including the lighting. standing in the rooms with the large windows, exposed to the vast space from multiple directions, but still in the relative safety of the space station. it was just a comfy feel.

it's not like the space station was entirely inhuman either: there were many mundane everyday features there, like bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, bedrooms and cafeterias. it definitely felt like a place were real people lived and worked.
