Jesus fucking Christ. The Redneck Rampage sewer level.

I played through that game and its expansion and sequel all in a row for the first time last year and was honestly so surprised I stuck with it after getting to that sewer level.

I've played a lot of shitty sewer levels in my time, but RR's level design outside of that wasn't exactly good to begin with. The level design in that game ranges from absolute dog shit tier to decent tier with very few diamonds in the turd.

But that fucking sewer level. Holy shit. It is without a doubt the worst sewer level I have ever played and probably one or the worst levels I've ever played in any retro FPS. It made me want to find and mutilate the genitals of the level designer that made it. I've played Wolf3D and all of its expansions all the way through and it was less mazelike and easier to understand.

The level design in the expansion and sequel I seem to remember being a step above the base RR game but I'm not sure because it all kinda blends together as one game for me when I think back about it.

And yes, the add-on Route 66 does a great at hiding the flaws of the original game while retaining the good aspects.

The sequel Rides Again fixes most of the flaws of the original, adds tons of cool stuff, and has some amazing level design too. Sadly the first level is probably the worst, but the factory level for instance is some of the most advanced level design I've seen in a pro Build game ever.
They really knew how to come around the limits of the engine.

Also, Rides Again actually has Room Over Room like Blood and Shadow Warrior (it works and looks more like SW's) but somehow few people are even aware of that... It's not often used but when it is it's like a cherry on top of the cake

>Also, Rides Again actually has Room Over Room like Blood and Shadow Warrior (it works and looks more like SW's) but somehow few people are even aware of that... It's not often used but when it is it's like a cherry on top of the cake

I always thought Blood's RoR was a more logical way of extending the engine for that usecase. SW's is....quite messy....

>> No.4278482

Don't want to sound like a retard, but where does SW use RoR? The shareware maps don't seem to have it and the temple maps are made up of mishmashed beta maps back when SW was about temples, making it unlikely there'd be RoR. Maybe the spa map? Parts of the secret shopping center map?

>> No.4278495

SW use fake RoR. You can see through sectors to target sectors like they are mirrors. No real RoR in the game.

Shadow Warrior uses RoR in nearly every map, dude. Complete with a primitive form of overdraw tagging, even.

>>4278482

Like I said, nearly every level has it used to some degree. Hell, even the transparent water bits are using some of the same tricks (no idea how the engine "officially" classifies them, though; just that it's using some of the same rendering quirks that occur during RoR).

...If you guys don't believe me, fire up it's BUILD editor. It just physically yanks all RoR sectors into alignment at level load, unlike Blood's more sensible (in my opinion) approach.

Duke3D always strived on attention to detail and Build itself has to keep up with tons of independent entities. That can get pretty fucked up with client server. While P2P only has to exchange keypresses at a constant rate and let the engine just work it out. I think that's the main setback for the new netcode.

That's not my theory. The game itself never gets too concerned with story: the Pig Cops used to be human (but no longer are), the middle guy and his race wield some influence over the last dude and his people (never stated specifically what the nature of that power dynamic is).

My theory is that the Cycloids are a distinct species with several client races (slaved or otherwise) who have been contracted by the dudes from The Birth to deliver earth's women. For reproductive purposes, of course (Richard Grey is a sick bastard and we all love him). When they fail (first three Episodes), the acid-spitting gentlemen get impatient and use the power vacuum your ass created by killing the Cycloid Emperor to assume direct control over the entire empire and come after Duke in-person (thus Episode Four).

After that the entire canon, such as it is, falls apart. Some consider only Caribbean legit, precious few others DukeDC, and a sizeable third both. No one talks about Nuclear Winter 'cause...Why would they?

When you destroy their leadership, their bioweapon gets out of control and starts to spread everywhere

I don't think there is even any skill behind all that posturing. The only skill you exhibit right here and, probably, the only skill you have ever had and you were ever good at, is creating an image of someone you are not. Lotta people in this thread REALLY overrating Redneck Rampage. It's the black sheep of the BUILD engine games for a reason. The level design is mostly mediocre if not downright bad, the art style is uglier than other BUILD games, the enemy design is a pants on head retarded quickloadfest (hitscan instakills from the giant titty aliens and such).

The holy trinity of BUILD games is obviously Blood, Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior. It doesn't matter which one you prefer out of these 3 or which one you like less, all other BUILD games are objectively inferior to them as a group so quit your autistic bitching about how Blood is bad or whatever.

Duke 3D = Blood = Shadow Warrior > -POWERGAP- > Redneck Rampage = PowerSlave = Witchaven = etc.

Witchaven is alright. It kinda drags on a bit too long for its own good though. Devs obsessed with making 30 level games (well, Witchaven is actually 25 levels but it has a sequel which is almost identical so that's another ton of levels) when it doesn't have the content to back it up. Shadow Warrior avoided that and cut down the fat and went with a 20 level campaign.

It also has some very strange sound issues, a random jumpscare thing that happens periodically, some invisible instant death traps and is in general a kinda ugly game, but for the first BUILD game it's not that bad a game.

Powerslave has some of the best layouts of everything you mentioned, it's also really nice and comfy in its terms of both art direction and music. The combat in it really does kind of suck (although not nearly as hard as in TekWar), and I just don't know, how you could waste a combat with almost no hitscanners THAT bad, but, overall, it's a very solid game regardless.

RR is for those who appreciate novelty (Sandy Petersen kind of novelty), it's a collection of very haphazardly tied together ideas, and it's aimed much more toward expert players, but some of them ideas are really fucking cool. Also, the art direction is just inspired, really, it just really hits the nail on the head in the sense in which no other "ironic" Build games do. Female aliens are very much a nuisance though, that much I can agree with.

BUILD Powerslave is the first iteration of the game, and it wasin the development for something like 3 years. Saturn Powerslave is the second iteration of the game, remade from scratch, when it became apparent, that it was impossible to port Build code over to Saturn, and it was in development for maybe year and a half. PC version just received a lot more care, and it shows in its layouts in particular. And yes, I agree, that Saturn Powerslave is a much more innovative game overall.

Literally all of them excluding The Ruined Temple from the Plasma Pak episode. That is honestly the only bad map I can think of in the entire game + Plasma (and even that map is not bad in terms of gameplay since you can approach it however you want. It's an open playground basically, which is why I think it's bad, it's just kind of a lazy abstract mess -- but even so it's still fun to play through). Personally I also find The Haunting pretty boring gameplay wise. It's the one map where I end up yawning during replays but in terms of atmosphere that map is second to none.

Funny thing is, the game is only meant to be installed on W9x systems, so for DOS the game had to be installed from a plain directory rather than a cd drive.

If you think your shitposting brings anything to a discussion or amuses anybody but yourself, you are wrong. nobody wants you here.

Anyway.

Doom is all about situational awareness, solving minor navigational puzzles and avoiding projectiles and maybe shooting stuff if you feel like it

CoD is about delivering precise hits on low-mobility targets and taking cover after taking too much hits, because if you ty and pass without taking out the targets you get pelted with shots and die. Unless you are playing sp on kiddie difficulty or MP with literal kids (which happens often though).

NAM encorporates pretty much everything bad about CoD model of FPS, while being built upon the bones of oldschool FPS which leads to a disgusting putrid mix.

It's not guesses, he's reverse engineering Blood.exe by comparing the code instructions of different versions. Apparently he wants dev credit for it; someone showed a cap in another thread. And actually he might have something to hide. There are some theories that he's worried about showing the code because some of it is stolen. personally I don't give a rat's ass. It would be nice if he releases it, of course, as then the whole community could work on it together, and he says he might when he's nearly completed it but we'll see. I'd still rather credit the man rather than shit on him as is standard 4chan practice because he's given us something fantastic that no one else gave us for 20 years.

I've done a comparison/analysis on all of the weapons found in Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior.

Here we go, in order.

1. )

The mighty foot is a melee attack, which deals low damage. The attack is basically the equivalent of the punch from Doom. The mighty foot can also be hotkeyed, allowing for a quick, continuous attack. Like in Doom, to a much lesser extent, the melee attack damage can be increased slightly, using the steroid power-up, which increases player speed for a few seconds. Duke 3D only has one melee weapon, and no alts.

The pitchfork is a fairly standard melee weapon. Like in most similar games, the close-combat weapon is weak, and is generally redundant against the enemies you will encounter. The best use this weapon has is poking downed zombies and breaking vent shafts (as a minor ammo save). The pitchfork doesn't have an alt-fire or replacement weapon.

The sword (and also the fists, as an alternative weapon) is one of the more useful melee (and starting) weapons that exist in an FPS. This close range attack does strong damage, and is easily a viable weapon throughout most of the entire game, if used correctly.

Verdict: Shadow Warrior wins

>> No.4282540

>>4282537
2. )

The pistol that can briefly shoot through 12 bullets, before showing a quick reload animation. Predictably and understandably, the pistol does mediocre damage. A weapon like this is a fairly standard outing for an FPS, as a starting gun. This weapon has no alt-fire.

The flare gun is definitely a unique "starter" weapon for an FPS. This weapon shoots out one flare projectile when fired. The basic principle of this weapon (on the normal difficulties) is that one flare projectile is capable of killing one basic level enemy. However, unlike most FPS weapons, the projectile does not kill the target on impact - damage is applied over a few seconds. This means that the player will have to continue dodging and moving from oncoming enemies, adding a layer of depth to the gameplay. Enemies engulfed in flames can also deal fire damage to the player. The flare pistol is most definitely a weapon that is viable throughout most of the game. As an alternative fire, the flare gun can shoot an immediate large splash damage of fire, at the same cost as 8 regular shots.

The shuriken acts a starter ranged weapon. This is a quickly thrown weapon, and three projectiles are launched with every shot. One projectile always goes straight forward, while the other two respectively aims in a slight diagonal orient. The suriken is mostly weak. Dropped/used shurikens can be picked back up by pressing the use key. No alt-fire.

Verdict: Blood wins.

>> No.4282541

>>4282540
3. )

The shotgun from Duke 3D is another familiar outing. To put simply, it is very similar to the shotgun which was featured in Doom (Doom 1, that is, not Doom 2). The shotgun fires one shot, and has a slight delay to fire again, while the cartridge ejects (again, similar to Doom). Like Doom, the shotgun has high strength, accuracy, and range - in contrast, the shotguns that star in Blood and Shadow Warrior are much more close-range weapons. The shotgun is a primary weapon in the game. Like other Duke 3D weapons, the shotgun doesn't have an alt-fire.

The sawn-off is Blood's equivalent of the shotgun. The gun has two barrels, which are fired separately in two different shots. A fast reload animation will happen once both barrels are empty, giving a slight delay for players to immediately shoot more than two times. As a useful tactic, it is possible to switch weapons to reload the sawn-off after only one shot. As an alt-fire, both barrels can be fired simultaneously. As mentioned above, this is mostly a close range weapon. It is also a primary weapon.

The riot gun is the shotgun featured in Shadow Warrior. This weapon could be compared to the sawn-off, except with four barrels, instead of two. Once all four shots have been fired, it will reload quickly. Unlike Blood, switching weapons will not reload the riot gun. As an alt-fire, the riot gun can fire all four shots immediately. This can be extremely effective against most enemies, but should be used strategically, in order to conserve ammo. Most enemies do not require exactly 4 shots to kill, lower and higher. Like Blood, this is a close range weapon.

Verdict: Shadow Warrior wins.

4. )

The chaingun an automatic quick-firing weapon, and is essentially an upgrade of the pistol. However, unlike the chaingun from Doom, this weapon uses a different type of ammunition than the pistol. The chaingun has decent range and damage, and could be considered as the second primary weapon, after the shotgun. The chaingun requires no reloading at all, and can be fired continuously. The chaingun has no alt-fire.

The tommy gun from Blood is another automatic quick firing weapon. While not as fast as the chaingun, it has a strong damage, and is capable of dealing with a majority of enemies found within the game. The tommy gun has an alt-fire attack which sprays the bullets from side-to-side (at the cost of 14 bullets). This alt-attack is pretty useless, but it may be entertaining to use. Like the chaingun, no reloading necessary. It should be noted that the tommy gun holds a lot more ammo than the chaingun and uzis.

The uzi is the Shadow Warrior equivalent of the chaingun. Picking up a second uzi from the ground will allow the player to dual wield the weapons, for double firepower. Unlike the tommygun and chaingun, the uzi's will automatically reload once it has fired a certain amount of bullets. 50 for a single wielded uzi, 100 for double. Picking up extra ammo can also prevent this. The uzi's are a versatile and strong weapon which are useful throughout the game. The alt-fire toggles between single/double guns.

Verdict: Shadow Warrior wins.

5. )

The rocket laucher in Duke Nukem 3D simple and effective. One shot fires one rocket. Rockets have fantastic range and damage, and are capable with dealing with most enemies in the game with one shot. Rockets deal a decent-sized yet powerful splash damage. Explosions in this game obliterate corpse of enemies (useful to halt respawning enemies on the hardest difficulty). The rocket launcher has no alt-fire.

The napalm launcher is very similar to the rocket launcher from DN3D. However, it should be noted that the rocket launcher holds 50 rounds, whilst the napalm holds 50. Like the rocket launcher, the napalm launcher is incredibly useful against against basically everything, assuming you aren't close enough to hurt yourself. As an alt-fire, the napalm launcher can deploy a huge payload of fireballs, which bounce and explode everything nearby. This attack costs the equivalent of 12 regular shots to use.

The missile launcher in Shadow Warrior is, again, another very similar re-tool of the rocket launcher. The missile launcher is extremely strong, long range, and useful against all enemies. The missile launcer is particulary useful against the walking bomber enemies, as it can destroy them in one hit, and makes it so they never spawn a ghost. The missile launcher has 2 alt-fires, which must be picked up as items. The first alt-fire is a heatseeker, which follows enemies. The second alt-fire is a nuclear warhead, which counts down a gigantic blinding explosion. The aftermath of the nuke leaves the equivalent of a gas bomb for a short period. Only 1 nuke can be carried at a time. Holds 50 ammo, like rocket launcher.

Verdict: Shadow Warrior wins.

6. )

The pipe bomb is a small thrown weapon that acts a remote detonator. The throw can be held for a slightly longer distance, and the bomb bounces slightly upon landing. The bomb can be picked up by walking over it. Only one bomb can be thrown at a time. The explosion of the bomb is similar to the rocket launcher's.

The TNT is a set of weapons from Blood that are somewhat similar to the pipe bombs. The standard TNT explodes on direct impact, and can be thrown for much longer than the pipe bomb. As an alt-fire, it can be thrown without exploding on impact, giving it a bounce and strategic timed delay. There is also the remote detonator, which acts identically to the pipe bomb, except multiple can be dropped with the alt-fire. lastly there is the proximity mine, which explodes when the player or an enemy get close to it. The alt-fire drops the mine instead of throwing it.

The grenade launcher is a lot different from the TNT and pipe bombs. This weapon is closer to the missile launcher, but is different enough that it can be strategically interesting and important. The grenade launcher fires a shell which deals a noticeably much larger blast radius than than missile launcher. However, it also deals less damage than the missiles. Another major difference is that that the shell obeys gravity and bounces, meaning it can reach around corners and platforms more easily. The grenade bounces 3 times before exploding. The grenade will also explode whenever it makes a direct hit. No alt-fire.

Verdict: Possible tie between Blood and Shadow Warrior

7. )

The shrink ray from Duke Nukem 3D is perhaps one of the more helpful items in the game. This weapon shrinks down it target into a helpless mouse sized form. Shrunken enemies can be killed instantly by stepping (walking) over them. The shrink ray also reflects off mirrors and is used by some enemies/machinery in the game, meaning the player can also be shrunk. This makes the player extremely vulnerable, but can also be used to reach inaccessible areas. This is the only weapon in Duke Nukem 3D that has an alt-fire. A second weapon can be carried, called the expander. This weapon will exploded the target after several shots. Because of the rarity/cost of ammo this is gun has very limited usability.

The spray can seems to universally be considered the weakest weapon in Blood's arsenal. The spray can shoots out a stream of fire that does gradual damage to enemies. Unlike the flare gun, this weapon requires the player to be in constant close range, making it a lot harder to use. Possibly the best use it has is against the bloated butcher enemies (weak against fire) or the small spider/rat enemies. The spray can has an alt-fire which throws the can (similar to the TNT), creating a gigantic fireball (at the cost of 44 ammo). This could be considered ineffective, compered to the TNT. Like the TNT, this weapon can't be used underwater.

The sticky bomb in Shadow Warrior is best compared to the proximity mine from Blood. The difference is that that the sticky bombs, as the name suggest, stick to walls and enemies. Perhaps giving it a slight advantage over the mines. There isn't a limit to how many sticky bombs can be thrown. Some enemies also use this as a weapon. No alt-fire.

Verdict: Duke Nuke 3D wins.

8. )

The devastator from DN3D is like a mini rocket launcher. Each shot fires 2 small missiles that explode and can deal plenty damage, if used correctly. the explosion is much smaller, meaning it can be used at close range a little more safely. Because of the high damage and versatility this weapon can be used to get out of tricky spots or simply deal a ton of fast damage. This weapon doesn't carry much ammo. No alt-fire.

The Tesla cannon is the most powerful weapon in Blood. It deals very high damage, range, and it doesn't deal any damage to the user when fired normally. This weapon is highly effective against everything, and is always extremely useful. On top of that, it has 150% more ammo than the devastator. The Tesla cannon has an alt-fire that charges up disc-like shot, at the cost of 35 ammo.

The rail gun is a simple energy weapon. It has a maximum of 20 shots, and fires a long range and powerful bolt. Enemies that are struck and killed by this gun are obliterated and gibbed instantly. The rail gun can deal damage against the player if they are too close to their opponent. Also breaks destructible walls like other explosives. No alt-fire.

Verdict: Blood wins.

>> No.4282563

>>4282559
9. )

The tripmine is another bomb weapon. The mine is planted against a wall, and then it will admit a red laser. Anything that contacts the laser will trigger the mine. Most players feel this weapon has limited use, however it can be used for fun/strategy, or in multiplayer. Enemy tripmines can also be encountered in the game. No alt-fire.

The life leech is an odd staff-like weapon that can emit a blast of lightning, explosions, and fire. It seems that the purpose of this weapon was to be effective against most enemies, however it feels quite under-powered and redundant. The life leech has a cool alt-fire that lets the player deploy the staff into the ground, and act as an auto-fire attack/defense turret for the player. The staff can be knocked about when planted, giving the player addition strategy. The alt-fire doesn't cost additional ammo to set down (it will automatically use ammo though), and it can be picked back up at any time.

The guardian head is a weapon fashioned from a scavenged demon. The head can shoot out a fast, rapid stream of fireballs against enemies. The guardian head has two other alt-fires, the first casts a ring of fire around the play, damaging enemies that come in contact. The last alt-fire sends out a powerful ground barrage attack of flames (both alts cost 10 ammo each). Enemies such a guardians and invisible ninjas also use these flame attacks.

Verdict: Shadow Warrior wins.

The freezethrower is a interesting weapon, but, ultimately, is mostly inefficient and redundant in comparison to the stronger and more effective weapons. The freezethrower shoots out a stream of projectiles that freezes an enemy solid. Like the shrink ray, frozen enemies can be killed immediately. Also like the shrink ray, enemies will break free eventually, demanding the player to be quick. Freezethrower projectiles bounce off of walls, which can be an advantage, and can also potentially be devastating to the player's own health.

The voodoo doll is a fantastic weapon. If this weapon is "fired" when an enemy is in sight, they take damage. If there are no enemies around and it is used, the player takes the damage. This weapon can be extremely useful at dealing with fidgety and annoying enemies, plus the damage is good. The damage and ammo cost on this weapon seems to be completely random. The alt-fire of this weapon devastates everything on screen, at the cost of giving up the doll.

The ripper heart summons a ghostly version of the player equipped with a continuously firing rail gun. The ripper heart can assist the player and do an immense amount of damage against anything in the game. The spirit can take damage from enemies and the player, and will die if harmed too much. Only 5 of these can be carried. No alt-fire.

Verdict: Possible tie between Blood and Shadow Warrior.

Alright faggot, listen up.
I'm about to educate you about reverse engineering of Blood.

What M210 did was take a leaked alpha source code and executables, (making port from these would be illegal IIRC) then looked at how various instructions of the code are represented in the assembly code of a running exe.
Then he compared the assembly with the processes of v1.0 exe file. Version 1.21 was compiled differently which made the instructions nearly untraceable, and thus 1.0 was chosen for comparison.

So BloodGDX code is still based directly on v1.0 code, except it was obtained through direct debugging of a running code, and this makes it work in 100% same way as if it was written directly from a proper source, which is why BloodGDX is so accurate.

From the coding perspective as long as all instructions were reconstructed, there is no difference between a "real" source code and reconstructed one.

Googgle them up. It was I who made the in-game comparison image, and the clay model image was taken from one article of an interview with the dev.
Not to mention that vanilla game itself uses that same AR on all resolutions from 320x240 onward. 320x200 was squished since it was supposed to get stretched by CRT, which should be obvious for anyone who ever played games on CRT. If you argue about that you are clearly too young to remember how they work and should go to /vr/crt/ general to educate yourself.

Never saw any attempts at Chasm remakes.
And yes, it stems from bootleg era, but not in the way you would expect.

That phenomena takes some explanaion and exposition to explain:

In the 80's western culture stopped being forbidden fruit, but still remained a "deficite" - a thing that is very hard to get by normal means since no western countries were selling anything to russia. This was an era of "video clubs" where pereson who managed to take hold of good tape player and a VHS recording of a movie would play it infront of ~20 of his friends/acquaintances in sort of mini-movietheatre way.

Ofcourse kids were excited about it too, and hardly anybody cared about age restrictions, since there were very few other ways to get western kind of entertainment, which was all much higher budget than what we had.

As a result kids (me included) got to see all sorts of violent 80's-early 90's stuff with literally no supervision at all, and also zero respect for copyright (again there was no way to get legit VG stuff here until ~2004)

Parents that grew up in that periods would later pass on their movie tastes onto their kids, which lead to 90-early 2000's russian kids being much more accustomed with western 80's culture, and as a result gain interest in videogames that draw inspiration from that culture (Doom, Blood, Duke) and cheesy violence it had.

Another aspect of it - nobody gives acrap about age restrictions here due to abovereasons, and even new generation of gids enjoy 80's movies since violence is fun, and modern non-horror movies are too tame.

As they grow up and learn a bare minimumof technical skills they get a creative streak and attempt to recreate the experience they enjoy (usually at ages 14-16) but "bigger better modern and shiny", slap together some putrid shit, get praise from similar minded 14-16 year olds that have no taste, grow out of it, realise it looks like chewed ass and abandon their projects.

Russian BrutalDoom fandom are also mostly people who grew up in the 90's on all the cheesy violence of american 80's movies, and that's the closest thing to it you can get in a vg form, since modern games are way too tame in comparison

Counter-Strike obsession is a legacy of computer clubs that were abundant in '98-2004 since many could not afford a PC at that time, and the best other VG alternative was Famiclone "Dendy"

Through assembly code it is possible to determine exactly how a function works, and create a function that will work the same in all cases, achieving same result by different means in 100% of presented scenarios.

From the coding perspective the only difference between method A (source code) and method B (re-made code) is only in efficiency of execution, if the onewriting the code knowsat least two bits of what he's doing, and judging by his ability to interpret ASM,hedefinitely does.

>>4282828
>what is a reading comprehension

final code might have nothing incommon with Alpha code. Alpha code was still used to find out corresponding functions in v1.0 exe

It's just one or two idiots tops (one of them is particularly vocal and ignorant, and despite his pathetic attempts at 'purism/elitism' he simultaneously shills for Kaiser's upcoming recreation and spouts it to be a 'real shame' that it won't be made. Not only is he retarded, he's also a total hypocrite). People that actually know Blood like GDX. You can see this on any real online Blood community.

The only reason I could see for someone not liking GDX is if he's too huge a fan of Blood's software rendered look. That's fine, it's just a preference. Naturally it's also in beta and so its bugs are still being ironed out (remarkably quickly). However those that want to play the game at 144fps/hz with modern native resolutions, true widescreen support and perfect mouse controls with none of the shitty DOSBox slow downs/hiccups/input lag will love GDX. Of course I love and prefer Blood's original software rendered look but I'm a gameplay over aesthetics person, which is the same reason I run GZDoom (no filter) at a constant 200FPS over ZDoom with frequent drops in more demanding modern slaughterwads. It's also much easier to run community addons with GDX than it is to go through the bullshit you have to with DOSBox every time you want to try out a new one. 'Le java' is a non-argument considering GDX runs at well over a thousand FPS and has not once crashed on me. Playing GDX allows you to take your gameplay to the next level, it's so damn smooth and feels fucking amazing. DOSBox sucks dicks and I'm glad I'll never have to use that abomination again for Blood.

Excluding in-game experience, the only other reason I could see for someone being a bit miffed about it is that M210 is not making it an open source project. But again, if this is because of the worry that Atari will sue his ass then it's more than understandable. Regardless I don't care much because the guy is still delivering and he's given us something fucking amazing.

Hendricks appreciates that GDX is a legit reverse engineer and he also wasn't a fan of BloodEX, as shown in this cap. I don't know what Hendricks is actually upset about, looks like programmer pettiness or jealousy. Apparently he was upset that GDX is using eDuke32's polymost despite being closed source, is using illegal code and he doesn't agree that it uses Java (lol). At one point in the thread below he also flat out says, "m-my Blood port will be better!" He was pretty much on a passive aggressive crusade throughout it, weird stuff. M210 ignores him throughout for the most part, it's a pretty fun read.

I played World Tour, I'll have to say, I found the maps to actually be pretty damn good, the Amsterdam map, Soviet Russia, the demolished Golden Gate Bridge, the final ascent to the final encounter at the Hollywood sign (which you can vandalize).
However, the final Boss encounter is fucking ludicrous in how easy he is because he has flamethrowers and you have plenty of room to move so if you have even slight presence of mind, he is no challenge, even the original Cycloid Emperor could at least reach you from a distance with his missiles, despite it being easy to sidestep them.

The real 3D is actually pretty sweet, the lightmapping actually makes the original textures look amazing, I'd love to see how other old raycast games would look like with a 3D render, colored lighting, and lightmaps, all with the original textures and sprites.

Sound can be odd, the port somehow really brings out how different the sound quality is for some things, some original Duke lines sound noticeably different, and the pistol sounds extra tinny/muted, while in the original .exe or Megaton Edition, it felt more seamless.
The new Duke lines are a bit odd, and lack a lot of the energy and presence of classic Duke, like JSJ doesn't quite want to be there or lacks a lot of enthusiasm, like he was just "I'll just record these lines then, I guess."
Music is pretty decent, though I much better liked Megaton's renditions of the classic tracks, the new tracks for Episode 5 are pretty solid, particularly the first one.
I quite enjoyed the audio commentary that's available, though it's quite a lot more sparse than I'd like, there's plenty of things they could have commented on but didn't, plenty of the levels have little to no commentary.

Controls are fine, and customizeable, (which you don't always get with modern console FPS these days, mind you), though they felt better on Megaton. On PC, I imagine I could just throw it all in EDuke32 and it'd work even better and let me do whatever I want.

I remember that the machinegun nests and snipers were absolute cunts, I was NEVER able to spot them and enraged me to no end, and don't get me started on the Claymore mines. I swear that game kept me on my toes constantly, it was too stressful sometimes.
The night-time levels are even worse because you can't see SHIT (you can light up the area a bit by shooting the M-60, not sure if this is on purpose but it's fucking genius) but you have to actively scour ever corner of the map -without getting sniped in the process- in the hopes that you find the night vision... it's an absolute GODSEND, it's literally the only way to spot enemies even from afar.
Pretty sure that by the time I was half-way into episode 1, I started spamming quicksave because it was just too much, but even then, quicksave can get you so far and I liked the challenge of going at least half a level without quicksaving.

That's because BloodGDX is a far less ambitious program than EDuke32, it's literally xDuke but for supporting Blood, and uses polymost instead of the original render. EDuke32 is built with the premise of expanding the original experience while staying true to the game. Since you have to fill the gaps on your own by adding to other's people work, the software is bound to become unoptimized and buggy by the time, even more natural is the increase in memory requirements. When all that needs to be done is set, optimizations will come.

I top feel they could unbloat the classic render by disabling TROR routines or whatever got it running like a slog, but don't be so harsh at the EDuke32 team.

Love AMC TC, shitload of new levels (some are great, few sucks, but overall really decent quality), every character has different weaponset but you can also use generic weapons found during your playthrough or by researching them in your base. There are also special weapons to find for each character (unlocking weapon vendor during one of the secret missions lets you buy additional ones that cant be found on any of the maps). There are new enemies, new moves (with additional ones unlocked via research). Story is kinda cringeworthy but overall the mod is great and I recommend it for everyone who likes classic build games.

Depends on what you'd be looking at.

Newer Doom mapsets like Ancient Aliens or Back To Saturn X are very colorful and crisp looking. I'll say that I'm very fond of how detailed games like Duke Nukem 3D are, with all kinds of props and items lying around to make it feel more real and lived in, like how a bar will have glasses and bottles and tip jars, or an office desk will have a PC, a desklamp, a blotter and papers, etc. Better yet, you can often shoot and break a lot of stuff like that.
You only see detail like that in mapsets for Doom on rarer occasions, and seldom is it shootable or such like in Duke.

It comes to how you design your game I guess.

That one's not really a source port, Redneck Rampage source code was never released, it's a EDuke32 hack that adds some support for RR.

I think it's possible that you could add support for music by making some .def files. Download any one of music add-ons for Duke and check out the format. It should work.

OR, you could just play music in the background using whatever music player you like. In the original game all the tracks play at random anyway, it was a lot like the "radio" system in GTA.

And yes, WT doesn't have the original 3 add-ons (of which 1 is shit), but AFAIK it was included in Megaton even though they didn't have the rights to it. AFAIK they didn't pay a cent to the right owners of these add-ons, because they seem to be in a legal mess, which is probably why they're not included in WT. I wouldn't be surprised if they were just told by Scott "gives away what he doesn't have" Miller it was fine that they included it.

>>4287667
Unless you're referring to a post-situation I'm unaware of, that's not what happened. For HTTK, Scott Miller gave away what he didn't have as payment. Duke Nukem 3D indeed felt like it was held together by chewed gum even back in the day, but the presentation and gameplay is so great I just kind of learned to accept it, to just be really careful around bathroom stall doors.

GZDoom is pretty stable, but it has it's limitations, particularly with optimization but also questionably implemented features.
For instance, GZDoom has 'voxels' as an available utility, but in reality, the engine doesn't actually render real voxels, what it does is that it substitutes each voxel with a 1x1x1 polygon with a solid color, which is frankly an atrocious solution that will make sure that near any use of these 'voxels' is sure to tax the already poorly optimized engine. There's also the further issue that the engine can't really be made to run much smoother than it currently does without tearing everything out and starting near from scratch.

There's also the P2P multiplayer which doesn't work for shit and used to be headed by a real shithead dev. Supposedly he's gone and they're working non a not-P2P multiplayer.

Neither the shrinker or the freezer are that great weapons. You use shrinker almost exclusively on commanders, freezer only when you're low on both shotgun and chaingun, and sometimes on newbeasts.

Incinerator like the expander was a planned weapon for the original game, but pulled off. I'm glad they added them to this game, too bad the space suit wasn't implemented for Dark Side.

>> No.4288163

Also, incinerator is extremely helpful in close ranged combat. It's quite useless on maps like Golden Carnage, where the scale is big, but in maps like the ones by Levelord it's almost overpowered.

>Neither the shrinker or the freezer are that great weapons
The freezer is super situational at best, and a fallback at most other times, I'll give you that, but the Shrinker is amazing.

Yes, the obvious best usage of it is to zap Commanders with and stomp them like cigars, it's not only hilarious and empowering to literally squash an otherwise mighty enemy like a bug under your heel, but it's a sensible fighting tactic.
That said, the game gives you plenty of charges for the thing in most episodes, far more charges than there are Commanders for you to zap, generally. I always have a good time pulling out the Shrinker on occasion to use it on chaingunners and pig cops.

Exactly. ROR was accomplished (according to Silverman, anyway) by the Blood developers noticing a rendering quirk in their version of BUILD which, if properly shored up n' sheit, would allow the renderer to show the entirely separate sector you were actually looking at as if it were contiguous with the one you were currently in (instead of merely rendering garbage to the viewport, as it would have done in Douk).

Still had to be careful, though; bugs in Blood's code meant that enemies never saw you until you "went through" to their sector, and that there were several oddities with firing weapons through the transition layer (hitscan was affected most often, but I've had the flare gun completely fuck up on occasion too).

I've always wondered something, if even Duke is cool with SoS, and DooM is seen as a 2.5D game due to its 2D map storage format and 3D rendering, does that mean Build is a rudimentary 3D engine? Since while you could only look at the map from the top perspective in the vanilla editor, the maps itself could store recursive sectors in any xyz coordinate, while idtech1 could only store one sector in any given xyz.

I wish there was a Mapster fork optimized for SoS abuse that lets you edit sectors from different perspectives and also their height, nothing too different from post-Quake.

It would get messy with stuff like >>4291571 is saying (by the way that's E2L10 IIRC), but it would help with creating orphaned sectors without fiddling with the values or making them smaller than intended sectors just so you could select or place sprites on the damn thing if it overlaps.

>> No.4291953

>>4291925

Duke is most definitely *not* cool with SoS. It just used clever tricks to teleport you from one sector to the next on the fly. It can't render two sectors linked thus to the viewport, for example (you'll get garbage), and good luck doing any of the clever shit the Blood team got their fork to accomplish.

The only thing 3D about BUILD was when Ken added voxels.

Yeah I made the mistake of using SoS (sector virtually inside another sector's physical bounds) and RoR (sector physically on top/bottom of another sector). Duke is definitely cool with both on a contextual level, only fucking up when you attempt to share sector links like you said. Apart from that lacking feature, the map format is cool with all sorts of independent sectors so it may as well be a (rudimentary) form of 3D because sectors have no limits aside from the editor bugs which generate corruption.

What I would want is the editor to change perspective and have walls be selectable using nodes for both ceiling and floor (of course carrying one would do the same with the other), like modern 3D editors. So that if I made a square sector, and increased ceiling height to same lenght as the walls, I would see a cube on any of the editor's non-orthogonal projections.

why do people neglect the true meaning of the term "2.5D"? there is a reason why it exists because id tech 1 DID have a z-axis, but ONLY for actors.

you should be able to formulate that assumption by making the observation of how a cacodemon's projectile can move diagonally when the cacodemon is above the player.

another example is how enemies can move down stairs (i.e. e1m2 on ultimate doom), and the technical name for this are "drop-offs".

and PS: idmypos 1 in gzdoom (in software renderer just for anyone who will say that it's because of the opengl renderer) and you can see all three axes in effect.

>>4292164
build is more or less, quite similar to id tech 1 on this aspect. you can instantly recognize that there is also a z-axis there, too. just take a look at how sentry drones can maneuver vertically in the air.

this all comes from what i stated earlier about how the top-down 2D map design. it seemingly confuses an abundance of people whenever discussions like this occur because they have to realize that actors—no matter what—are on a true 3D space, and are equipped with a z-axis.

this is very true for interactive portals, but it seems for static portals, in dn3d that is, that those separate sectors aren't required.

I love both personally, and I think both are underrated in some ways. When people talk about it they often exagerate on points which I feel are less important, like the controls in the DOS one or the "Metroid Prime" style of the console one which is highly exageratted.

The Build one has some amazing Doom-like level design, some of the best I've seen.
To anyone who hasn't played it, watch out for what you download, there are more bad rips and beta versions floating around than the actual good version. The date on the .exe should be March 19 1997 for Exhumed and September 24 1996 for Powerslave, everything else are glitched betas. And of course you should have CD musics.

The console one has some great 3D architecture and layout, people need to realize that it has Quake like level design while having been developped at the same time as Quake.
Also the bomb jumping is awesome in the Saturn version. The PS1 version lacks it and its gamepaly doesn't nearly feel as tight, but it's still worth playing for the different levels.

I know both versions in autistic ways.... a couple of friends and myself studied and documented, the DOS version, which didn't have modding support, so that people may make maps for it. We also made a small 3 maps episode for it. The Saturn, I made a speedrun, beating the game in 25mins.

The problem with these type of games they get repetitve after a few levels. Duke Nukem's greatest feat is not to use a central theme. There are city, hi-tech, canyon, moon, alien levels.

>> No.4298390

None of these games use central theme, except for maybe Redneck Rampage (it's themes are too similar to one another in terms of palette)
Even with limited texture selection such games can get rreally creative with architecture so it does not feel repetitive at all - Heretic is a good example
The only time an oldschool FPS can be repetitive is if the mapper sucked dicks (happened with most of games that tried to ape Doom/Duke just for the sake of apeing them)

Shadow Warrior is pretty short (only 22 levels and 2 of them are secret and very hard to find) and doesn't have many bad levels, apart from maybe Sumo Sky Palace and Water Torture.

The enemy line up is what brings it down in my opinion. It's like fighting Enforcers and Sentry Drones all the time. Hitscan and in your face explosions really wear you down and you start save scumming at every step.

Also, the fuck's up with the grenade launcher's blast radius. It's very hard to hit something with it and not lose at least 5-10 hit points yourself.

SW is actually pretty easy because you most of your weapons are extremely deadly. Don't play it like Doom, where you mostly rely on shotguns and your automatic weapons and keep the heavier weapons for "emergencies" (read: never use them); use and abuse your explosive weapons as much as you can.

The grenade launcher is meant for indirect fire. Once you enter a room, toss a grenade so it bounces into the room you want to enter. You should be able to quickly clear out a room before you even enter it.

After you get the hang of SW, you'll find you'll quickly become a whirlwind of explosions and fire, gibbing everything in sight.

You know, after Quake, I just don't perceive those games as something, that has any sort of... integrity to it. The thing about Quake is that, basically, Petersen designed his own Quake, Romero designed his own Quake, the other two good-for-nothings designed their own Quakes, and they didn't even PRETEND anyone gave any shit about each others' versions of Quake.

Duke, Shadow Warrior, Unreal, etc. are exactly the same thing, only they DO pretend to have some sort of integrity to them, by alterating levels made by different authors. But, still, Allen Blum is Allen Blum and Levelord is Levelords, and they just do have vastly different mapping styles, and, well, as a result, Allen Blum's Duke is a pretty vastly different game, compared to Levelord's Duke.

What I would really love, personally, is some kind of Build-based Quake, which wouldn't even PRETEND being anything other than a collection of levels made by different authors, with only very light thematic similarity between them and more or less non-shit shooting mechanics with more or less okay enemies. That would just get Allen Blum, Levelord, Keith Schuler, Stephen Cole, James Wilson, whatever, give each their own separate episode (and name the respective episodes after their authors), and tell each them to get wild in confines of said episode, with the only requirement of there being no less than, say, 15 properly lengthened levels in said episode, including secret levels (with being as explicit as possible regarding the question of pistolstart as intended or unintended method of play for each individual map). Like, a game, that wouldn't even pretend it isn't about level layouts and individual mapping styles. Like, something completely no bullshit about all of this, and with a load of great content by good level designers.

I would really like to have such a game. Well, one can dream, I guess.

On a sidenote, does Ion Maiden have anyone even remotely notable on the leveldesigning department?

I don't even know what you're getting at. Duke3D was originally a clusterfuck of ideas and concepts (see: LameDuke) that got repurposed and frankensteined in a more cohesive experience all around 1995. While I do see the differences in mapping styles I couldn't give less of a damn because differently from Quake, Build's limits enable a modicum of consistency across the parties, along with the sober art direction of the vanilla game (which admittedly went a little off the wall in the Plutonium Pak).

Because Quake was fucking boring, that's why. What you're asking for is like wishing regular dutch chocolate ice cream was fat-free french vanilla instead: not only would the essential nature of the product(s) be rendered unrecognizable, but what you would change them to was bland garbage in the first place.

>> No.4300783

>>4300767
Quake problems stemmed from polygon count, reduced palette (due to 16-grade shading, which basically reduced palette to 16 different colors), decision to make it a "Doom game in 3D" and the inability of the engine to render many monsters at once with decent performance, which led to damagesponging the monsters and slowing down player's movement. All of these reasons have nothing to do with the presence or lack of thematic consistency.

Which, by the way, CAN be preserved in my case is well, since, at the end of the day, all the individual level designers will still use the shared resource pool (textures, sounds, weapons, enemies) for creating their levels.

I love playing custom maps for this game because even the poor ones have some interesting value to me. Compared to Doom, it's harder to get into, takes more time, but you also have a lot more freedom with what you can do with the base game.

Think of shading for example. in Doom, you do per sector shading, easy and fast. In Build, you do per surface shading, so it's longer but you have more control on what you can do.
Think of effects, to make a door in Doom you just tag one sector. In DN3D, and in the vast majority of Build games (there are some exceptions, like Powerslave, which is simpler), you tag the door sector, but also have to use Sector Effectors sprite, one for the door, one for music, one for speed, etc
