This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it penis-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Is there much of a difference between a trinitron and wega? I already have a great condition trinitron but there's a 27 inch wega on cl. Thing is the one I have now is 75 or so pounds and this wega is 90 pounds and I could barely carry the trinitron up my stairs. I'm really tempted to pick it up just for a back up.

WEGA/FD Trinitron is the flat screen successor to the older cylindrical face models.

Pros: it's flat, you're more likely to see component or at least s-video input since they're newer models.

Cons: usually heavier, geometry, convergence and focus near top/bottom edges are harder to get right.

Theres some faint distortion constantly moving down my screen. I tried taking a picture but it doesnt show up. Basically everything about the image is fine except this inch tall patch of almost stretched out d shaped slightly grey lines constantly moving downwards. Does anyone know what that might be? It's on a Sony KV1311-CR

>> No.4283494

Is it normal for there to be such wild variances in luma between composite and s-video on a hi-black Trinitron? On the same console, s-video's luminance when displaying a 100 IRE test pattern has consistently been lower than composite video's, by around 20%. This has been the case with every console I've tried; if I target 80 nits on composite, the s-video luminance will be 60 nits or lower, causing the chroma to be massively oversaturated in comparison. Unless I'm mistaken, both composite and s-video luma signals should be identical outside of low-pass filtering?

Also, I'm noticing pretty extreme hue variances between input types as well. S-video and RF are correct at the same hue setting, but composite is way off, requiring a correction of several clicks to the left on the control. Again, with my understanding of NTSC signals, this shouldn't be the case? Is Sony just fucking around? Can any of this be defeated in the service menu? Should I just give up now?

>> No.4283687

>>4283450
I realized that the bars moving downward of bending distortion I mentioned in this post are actually being caused by my Super Famicom itself. I plugged in an N64 and there were no such issues. Has anyone else experienced such a thing? I just received the super famicom a few days ago. Is this an issue that is common? If so, I could still get my money back from the seller.

Strange.
My calibrated flat Toshiba CRT has the same brightness, contrast, color, and hue for composite and S-video.
Only the sharpness needs to be adjusted between them.
Presumably RF is the same but I didn't test that.

Moving up to component requires the colour, hue and brightness to be adjusted along with sharpness (but not constrast).

I guess the different inputs on your TV have different values in the service menu.

No. I tried taking a photo of what is happening with mine but it is impossible to capture. Pic is a drawing of what the distortion looks like. Really up close on the CRT it looks like waves going through the screen that wiggle the colors side to side at a width of about 1-2 pixels on the scanlines.

Not the case, unfortunately. SBRT, SCOL, and SHUE are global. As it stands, I've got two different user presets I can use depending on input, but it's annoying as hell because there's clearly some fuckery being applied to composite inputs that's messing with luma and hue with no readily apparent ways to defeat it in the service menu options for VP1-4.

I just got a Sanyo CRT from a friend and the picture quality is fantastic and it feels infinitely better than an LED to play Gradius on but it literally always says "VIDEO" in the top right corner. How do I get rid of it? Would I need to buy a universal remote to solve the problem?

Also, there's only one AV input, and it's mono. Would getting one of those AV hubs that interfaces with the coax port so I can have multiple consoles hooked up to it at once introduce input lag?

Sorry if these questions are really obvious btw, I haven't owned a CRT in 15 years.

>> No.4284550

If we're talking about a standard consumer NTSC SDTV, they accept a 15.7khz input. There are some unused lines, so nominally it can display 240 lines progressive or 480 lines interlaced. Analog video doesn't really deal in pixels, but practically speaking the signal resolves about 704 pixels horizontally, though most games will only use 640, 320, or 256. So the highest resolution 15.7khz NTSC signal you'll see is about 704x480i, which was only ever used by a few games on a few consoles (Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn, for example). Most retro consoles have a nominal resolution of 320x240p or 256x240p, though oftentimes they'll only use 224 lines to account for overscan.

It was on when I went but it was really dark. That really depressed me when I saw it. The only Beavis & Butthead machine in existence? Shitty screen. The only Primal Rage 2 Machine ever? Shitty screen. It's a shame & they don't seem to care enough to fix any of it proper. I'd love to have my own small arcade, but realistically I could only really open a resale store that happens to sell games. Then I would have the excuse of having MAYBE 4 machines inside. I'm this close to just doing ot so people have a place to play magic/yugioh/fneo geo & stay afloat just buying things locally to flip online. At least then there would be some decent arcade machines n a good outside of the southside. You can't actually have an arcade that isn't freeplay because of the chicago laws though, so you either open a "club" where you charge at the door/charge for a pass for the year/month, or you're limited to a few machines. zoning laws are probably different where they are, but I'm guessing they're probably technically a game museum or a club judging by how they operate. If you ever find a small game store on the north side with a darkstalkers machine it's probably me.

What is the difference between cheaper low model number CRTVs and expensive high model number CRTVs of the same brand and style?

For example how much better is a Sony KV-27FV300 than a Sony KV-27FS12?

Does the higher end, higher model number TV have better focus, convergence, linearity?
Or better black levels, contrast, colour, more TVL resolution?

Basically what I'm asking is was there any reason not to buy the cheapest model of the a good brand TV in the size you want?
I know the better models have more inputs and outputs but as long as the TV has audio-out and S-video in I don't care about this because I have switchboxes.
I also don't care about extra menu features like PIP and BBE audio and VM sharpening.

I bought a lower end curved Trinitron of Craigslist. When I first turned it on and looked at the snow I noticed the corners had blurrier snow (focus) and more colourful snow (convergence) than the center.
If I had bought a higher end curved Trinitron would it have better convergence and focus?

So I get wavy lines from my coax NES cable and don't have a remote for my Sanyo DS24205 to change it to my A/V. It's definitely something with my coax, since I've gotten the same result with my previous knockoff CRT (though the A/V was fine there).

Two questions:
How shitty are coax cable connections in general compared to A/V?
And how universal remote friendly are Sanyo TVs, primarily regarding access to the A/V channel?
No access to pictures for a few hours, sorry about that. The picture is pretty fucking boner-inspiring aside from the wavy lines, but that's just me talking.

No. *Coaxial cable* is higher quality than whatever premium cable monster and other rip-off companies use for their AV/component cables. The actual signal used is lower quality because it is just composite video + mono modulated in such a way that it has to share the cable with hundreds of channels.
You are better off using composite cables with your NES.

For analog signals cable quality may have some small effect that you can only see with an oscilloscope and gold plating makes the connectors keep a good contact for longer. But that doesn't justify charging hundreds of dollars for a few feet of cable.

HDMI carries a digital signal which typically uses error correction so if it works at all it'll work perfectly. If it doesn't work you'll get not picture at all, or horrible artifacts all over the place.

Exactly, which makes carbon covered HDMI cables completely asinine. You can tell they're taking full advantage of people who were used to analog signals, too.

Sure, the analog additions may help a little, but similar to the HDMI scam, they're just too damned much for too damned little.

This is factually false. The biggest question is the context you want. Do you want the perfect cables or do you want how the console was suppose to look/sound? A lot of tracks sound different when you use perfect clear sound and there's no distortion.

For the WEGA (pronounced VEGA) series you have the FS and FV lines which are not any newer or older than each other. FS is the standard line while FV has the 3d digital comb filter, 15w speakers vs the 10w of the FS, and the useless picture in picture feature. There might be other features that come and go depending on the specific model but those three are the major differences between the two lines. If you do lots of stuff over composite just go for a FV set, the 3d comb filter is really the only feature that matters since you should have your systems hooked up to an AVR and a proper set of speakers. I can't really say anything about the black trinitrons cause I have no experience with them but I would wager it's the same deal since it's still S vs V like in FS and FV. A better comb filter is just going to make things less grainy and snowy, 3d>4line>3line>2line

Well, you probably enter programming mode by holding down that "rcu setup" button for a few seconds (assuming that button doesn't normally do something else), and of course you also need to indicate which type of device you are programming a code for with that row of buttons at the top. Try different combinations of pressing the TV button and the setup button (like holding them both down at the same time, pressing one and then holding down the other, etc) followed by entering the numeric code on the keypad.
If any part of the remote is illuminated, it will probably flash or light up as feedback to tell you that you have entered programming mode.

Unfortunately these set-top-box remotes often only control the power, volume, and input functions of TVs, with all the other buttons only controlling the cable box.

>> No.4289179

Older games were designed for CRTs. Newer games are designed for HDTVs.
That's a general explanation, but it comes really down to a lot of things like how developers used to engineer the graphics (deeper black levels, and taking advantage of dithering and composite artifacting being just a few example), as well as the lower refresh rates. The latter in particular might explain your issues: HDTVs have far worse refresh rates than CRTs, and if you couple that with the inherently laggy process of upscaling standard-definition signals to HD then it results in an assload of frame-lag.
eg. You press jump and Mario takes 1/12th of a second to start jumping on a HDTV, versus 1/60th of a second on a CRT. So the delay between button:action is increased by a factor of 5.

Newer game consoles and PCs output HD video signals so the display doesn't have to upscale anything, resulting in no delay (Strictly speaking "less delay" but that's just me being pedantic).

Hello guys, I was offered a 27" Sony Profeel for free, you might remember me from a few threads back. Wanted to give you a quick update.

I went to check the screen out again, this time I had a BNC adapter and could get the 240p test suite to display correctly. The screen is absolutely gorgeous, although it does have some minor upper corner pincushion distortion. How hard would that be to adjust? I do realize that I'll basically need to remove the back and climb inside this beast.

Also, this legendary old man managed to procure the original clip-on speakers a friend had bummed from him and is adding them to the set for a tenner. Amazing.

The geometry controls are pots on one of the side boards (better than the 20" which has them on the bottom board underneath the tube). They are pretty basic compared to the controls on more modern sets and tbqh I'd advise leaving them alone unless the "problem" is really obnoxious.

If you do decide to tinker I'd highly recommend getting a set of non-conductive pot trimmers rather than using a metal screwdriver. I managed to short out on the board when doing mine and blew a few caps which necessitated a repair (and a fresh pair of underpants).

The D board is the one which deals with geometry (on the left hand side when viewing from the front).

Like I said controls are basic but there is a pin amp one which sound closest to your reported issue. I find it's easiest to undo the securing screw and swing the board out so you can perform the adjustments more easily. A pot trimmer can be used from the back side of the board but you'll find it very hard to watch the screen and perform the adjustment at the same time. Names are silk-screened onto the board at these adjustment points (black circles with a sort of zigzag line on the circuit diagram).

You might want to do some further research but I think if you find a cheap CRT set with SCART inputs (SCART being native to Europe, so you should have a good chance) then merely buying RGB/SCART cables for your PS2 and Wii should suffice to make all games playable.
Again I could be wrong, but my logic is that "if it has SCART it should support RGB", and "if it supports RGB (which is a standard unto itself, like NTSC, PAL, and SECAM) then it should just werk".

That aside you could also get an upscaler unit like the framemesiter or Mimo Genius II and play the games on a HDTV, but that's considered heresy 'round these parts.

When most people say "scanlines" they are referring to the blank space between lines drawn to the screen. These really only exist on 240p output, which 6th gen games are 480i/p. Much of this is up to opinion, but I think most people will tell you that 6th gen is "modern" enough that it looks great on modern displays with proper upscaling. By all means, huddle over a 20 inch CRT if that's what you're into.

Many ways to skin a cat, some are uglier than others.

Component from any of them through GBS is easy, but on the revision I have at least it tries to crop overscan and upscale what's left, so doesn't look that nice. Also adds a couple frames delay. A nicer option would be direct component to RGBHV converter.

DC puts out RGBHV natively, would just need the output box/cable.

PS2 and Xbox with modded BIOS can put out RGsB, can be used directly with the few PC monitors that allow sync on green or composite level combined sync. For those that don't, can go through a sync separator chip.

NTSC GCN can use expensive digital to VGA or HDMI + HDMI to VGA. Or just get a Wii. PAL GCN no 480p for you.

PS2/Wii can use cheap HDMI converter (make sure it's one that doesn't upscale) + HDMI to VGA but then you're getting an ADC feeding a DAC, which just feels wrong.

You can't just take the settings of one monitor and apply them to another and expect them to give equal results. The various settings in the service menu need to be adjusted specifically to suit the individual monitor/TV they're being applied to. It's 8 extra hours on the tube, but it was an essentially blank image without anything actually being sent to hit the screen. Unless it's already incredibly worn, you've still got thousands upon thousands of hours of use in it.

No it isn't nearly as bad as leaving a game running, as stuff is actually being actively drawn to the screen then, meaning you can actually burn stuff into the phosphor surface. A black screen isn't going to have much of an affect at all.

>Will there now be a burn-in of fullscreen black image causing all future games played to be darker than normal?
I'm not sure if that's a joke or not, but no. You need to remember; Black = Off and White = On. Displaying a bright full white picture for extended periods of time is what would lead to the picture growing dimmer and less vibrant (eventually).

The service manual is on Shmups, but i've uploaded it it here for you - https://my.mixtape.moe/unlasm.pdf

Also google the service manual for the PVM-2730QM - same set for EU and Aus. Those two manuals cover most revisions of the set, ones with S-Video and without, and with SCART or the weird-ass D25 connector on the US 2530. I think you can still get SCART adapters for those, in fact your images look like you're using RGB. If not, try to get S-video at least, it’s tons better than composite.

There is no OSD. 10 screws around the back of the case release the shell. Size, position and geometry adjustments are limited to pots on the D & D2 boards. Bias is two pots on the C board, gain is two on the B board. Convergence is D3 and the H-stat - the latter being the fat red resin block with the knob on it that sits between the flyback and the Anode cap. Pic related. The adjustments are labelled. A thin flat-bladed screwdriver will fit through the holes from the reverse side of the boards, so you never have to move them. Get an insulated one, because you have to make the adjustments while the set is on. Read the service manual to figure out what you want to play with, and in particular, what order to do the convergence adjustments in - these are pretty good, but can't fix things if the rings around the neck are in the wrong spots, which is a whole other bag.

If the HV is arcing or crackling around the red resin block, be careful. And the B+ is exposed in a few spots, but if you don't try to touch the boards with metal or your hands while the set is running, you'll be fine. Do it one handed and only lean on the plastic casing around the tube at the front, if you have to.

Lastly, it's a CRT, so "resolutions" isn't a very good way of describing what it's capable of. At 15kHz it'll do 240p and 480i only, but super-resolutions like 2560x240p are still 240p. Try reading sections b) through e) of this guide: https://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php/87668-A-guide-to-connecting-your-Windows-PC-to-an-SD-CRT-TV-PVM-or-Arcade-Monitor

Sorry, as in, the set is a 15kHz CRT. It will go to a shade over 16.2kHz happily, though you'll probably be playing with the V-hold knob on the back to get there, but won't go any higher.

If that confuses you, read the guide in the link above. That's mostly for PC though, consoles work at 15kHz, and won't work on your set at anything above 480i - so no 480p, 1080i or 720p.

And fuck me, the SM doesn't seem to have worked. I can't get the link to load. DESU the 2730 SM is the same, regarding adjustments. If you really feel the need, mikejmoffit uploaded the 2530 SM on shmups a while back.

I'm at a weird point in what I'm looking for it's not truly "retro" in relation to what the rules say but this has to be the best place to ask this. >> No.4308464

You should definitely use an LCD or modern TV. Anything over 480i imo looks better on a flatscreen, as they were made to handle these standard resolutions, whereas the "retro" resolution of 240p is considered low-res and aren't handled nearly as well. 480p will be handled even better by your TV, so I wouldn't recommend looking into or using CRTs. Of course, make sure your Wii is in 480p mode. Be sure to enable "game-mode" or something of the like to reduce latency if your TV has, and only put the video in widescreen if your games support it. Hello /CRT/.

I recently picked up a Sony Trinitron KV-27FS100 (May 2003) since my KV-24FS100 (June 2002) had some weird flickering along the top and exhibited some strange anomalies when there was a lot of white on screen.

Does anyone know if there's more or less input lag on either one of these models? It feels like there might be a bit more on the 27", but it's entirely possible that it's just placebo/I'm tired.

Also, it seems to be overscanning a bit. Is there a way to fix this without opening it up or am I going to have to take off the back? Any advice is appreciated.

>> No.4309764

>>4309759
If it's not an HD CRT, there should be no perceptible difference in input lag because shit would physically not work if there was enough of a difference in timing to be noticeable. If it is an HD CRT, those are logically more similar to modern displays and there could very well be a difference in lag depending on the amount of image processing.

I have a model 1, yeah.
So with the transcoder I'd just grab scart cables for everything, and get them into a switch, then take that and use the transcoder to hook just one set of component cables to my TV?

I'm fine with doing all this, I'd like to be set up for up to 6th gen this way if possible.

>> No.4309916

>>4309835
Yep; that'd work just fine. I do the inverse (Component to RGB) for one of my monitors, feeding to a switch (and another switch after) into a transcoder.

As for avoiding audio buzz for a model 1, just grabbing the audio separately would be the cheaper and smarter thing, so long as the cables are decent enough to not make any possible jailbars in the signal visible. If you're feeding into a SCART switch, a little pass adapter with taps for the audio(usually to pull it from the cable rather than feed it in) would work for adding it back in.

Assuming you're going through RGC or RCA, might need to make a special request to not have the audio pins on the cable so the wires leading back along the cable don't cause the buzzing to get carried over anyway. Or if you're handy with a soldering iron, you could probably just modify the adapter so as to not leave you with a cable with only one possible use.

Why would you? OLED displays have already bested CRTs in black levels, color gamut, resolution, size, and all other measures that matter when dealing with digital video. Most of the benefits of CRTs for retro consoles come from sending analog video signals to analog electronics, compatibility with old peripherals like light guns, and a nostalgia-driven appreciation for certain aesthetics like scanlines. The scanline "look" can be emulated with existing display technology, and the only way to fix compatibility with devices that depended on CRT idiosyncrasies would be to design a CRT. Don't get me wrong, I love my CRTs, but they have too many drawbacks to warrant emulating how they operate, which is how you'd need to do it to achieve the CRT "look."

Not all games are going to actually make use of the full raster they're generating to be displayed on the screen (SNES does this a lot, windowboxing stuff, and even changes the amount depending on the part of the game). On top of this, different games like to start drawing to the screen at slightly different times (as well as different consoles starting to draw at different times/different sync types making lines start later or earlier).

Yellow goes to video; White goes to audio in, and you set stuff to mono. Red gets left to cry in a corner.

If PVMs have any audio available, it's almost always going to be mono. If you want stereo, you should be looking for an external audio solution.

It's no PVM, but quite good for a consumer CRT.

I believe the value in that image is wrong, best schematic I could find lists that cap as 47pF, which results in the R-C giving a sensible 15MHz corner frequency low pass. If it was actually 200uF to ground that'd be a 20Hz low pass, in which case most of the AC signal would indeed be gone.

Would you guys recommend the RGB mod for NES/N64? I'm on the fence with regards to the NES as composite seems fine... enough, I guess.

N64 seems like it's gonna be ass regardless though, even with S-video, considering the blur coded into the games themselves.

Sounds like a capacitor in the power supply popped. One will be visibly broken if you open it up and they can be replaced, but only if you're comfortable with a soldering iron and working with high voltage electronics.

>> No.4314821

>>4314796
Regarding the N64, there is one RGB mod board that can reverse the standard horizontal blur effect https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=56988 Can also be disabled in most games via gameshark codes.

Your monitor has automatic termination so it shouldn't need to but sometimes it fails. You can try touching the output terminals with a 75 Ohm resistor and see if that helps.

"Brightness" controls the black level. There's only one correct setting for it, and it doesn't affect peak luminance much, if at all. The control you want to adjust is "Picture," which will adjust peak luminance. Unless are referring to raised blacks, which could be an indication of G2 drift.

What's the best DVD recorder with Component YPbPr inputs for recording gameplay footage?
And are there also great Blu-ray recorders with YPbPr inputs that work well for retro games?
How about VCRs that record S-Video well?

I have a friend who loves playing retro games on a CRT and I even introduced her to the HD Retrovision cables for certain consoles.

Now, she wants to record her gameplay on VHS, DVD and/or Blu-ray while she plays.
Just so she could have revisit those memories just by watching them and she always comes to me for advice on retro gaming and AV setups.

What brands would you recommend the most for DVD recorders, VCRs and Blu-ray recorders.

>inb4 record with a capture card like an XCAPTURE-1
She prefers to work with physical media.

I forgot to add this: She prefers playing on CRTs with 240p but she doesn't mind if the DVD, Blu-ray or VHS recording is in 480i since she always knew that VHS recordings of retro games were in 480i and they looked fine for retro games, or as good as VHS will allow them to be.

>> No.4315884

>>4315875
But she wants the 480i recording to look more like how a VCR would handle 240p being recorded in 480i rather than how an HDTV handles 240p as 480i.

So folks, I need to know one thing about PAL TVs and RGB SCART cables.

Is it possible for an actual RGB SCART (and not just composite video or anything like that) to still have trouble with NTSC where it only shows games in black and white?

I gotta ask because otherwise it looks a bit too nice not to be RGB. I'm using this supposedly "fake" RGB SCART cable for the Wii, which I'm using just for emulation and frankly it looks way too nice. I can find quality RGB SCART cables for cheap but they don't include separate audio connectors like the one I got.

What would you say is the value of my PVM 2530?
I got it for $150, and cosmetically repaired it by scraping off the old tape that covered the frame of the unit, then I spray painted a new coat of black paint on it to make it look nice. I had it professionally recapped and calibrated by a retired sony PVM professional, and I hunted down and obtained a pair of Sony APM speakers that are built for this model of PVM.
All together I put in $400 into this 2530. I'm not looking to sell it for a long time, I just want to know what it would be worth in it's current condition.
