Try Nethack next. Hard, but plenty winnable. If you want more hit up IVAN.

Mr Nutz was one of the more challenging 16bit platformers. It also has really nice artwork, music, anda plethora of hidden areas and secrets.
4th gen really nerfed the difficulty of pretty much every game compared to the 8bit equivalents, so you'll want to scour the nes library for the more brutal titles

I treat continues in checkpoint-based arcade games as a sort of difficulty setting. Credit feeding will still give you a challenge, but the 1cc is a better and more satisfying test of skill.

Anyway, Daimakaimura/Ghouls 'n Ghosts comes across as harder than it is. When I credit fed through it I thought it was super tough, but it only took another day of practice to 1 credit both loops. I think the Japanese arcade version is the definite one so give that a try sometime.

Here's some of my recommended hardcore single player games:

Holy Diver for the Famicom - Possibly the most brutal NES/FC game. It's good though.

Espgaluda - Arcade shmups are without question the biggest and toughest source of hardcore single player games. This is one of the best and most approachable ones.

This >>4282415 anon's suggestion isn't bad, but I think Nethack's bad UI and extreme levels of required memorization make hard to recommend as an introduction to roguelikes. I'd say Brogue is the best introduction to the genre, but it's not retro. ADOM hits a lot of the same notes as Nethack, and I find it more enjoyable.

I remember beating it, after playing a marthon session with my brothers. We finally got passed all those red demons and fighitng the bosses all over again in the castle. Bullshit, having to beat it twice though.

I liked the brick wall difficulty curve of Nethack.
It was a good entry to roguelikes in my opinion. Makes the rest seem almost easy by comparison.

GnG is a rote memorization series similar to Contra, although the precision and timing are quite a bit more autistic than anything Contra has ever thrown our way.

Also check out Trojan by the same developer. It plays a lot like GnG.

>GnG is a rote memorization series
Not at all. GnG is all about getting fucked up by random enemy spawns and erratic motherfuckers. There are some "gotcha" traps here and there but it's not where the majority of the difficulty comes from.

Not entirely... It's more of a "Forced Completionist" game. The GBA version is a bit easier because there's no knockback,
and different placements, but the game itself is inferior due to the cut music, and screen size
.

I feel like Adventure of Link gets pretty hard at the end. Making your way through all those tough enemies and Moas that will knock you into lava on your way to the the last palace, then through so many rooms just to reach the last boss or a dead end (pic related, it's my map I've been working on). Even with everything maxed out I'm still finding it challenging. Can't even imagine beating this without continues or grinding extra lives.

>> No.4283991

>>4283323

No such thing as randomness. Even the most fucked up RNG is ultimately deterministic. But there's nothing particularly arcane about GnG's RNG, assuming it has one.

>Can't even imagine beating this without continues or grinding extra lives.

You use your lives as a resource. Typically you make it to Thunderbird on your second life, die, and kill it on your last life. Once you find the ideal path you can do it.

But yeah you're not gonna make it through the palace on your first try, that's why you continue from the entrance instead of the start of the game.

Turbo tunnel isn't even hard. The part before the end of the turbo tunnel, where you jump over the gaps repeatedly, is harder than just rocking your thumb back and forth.. Later levels are way harder, like 3rd rat from rat race.

This shit is brutal with a gamepad but it's probably pretty easy with an arcade stick or any other kind of controller you can set on a surface like a Beatmania/Pop'n controller.

I honestly think AoL is hardest in the middle of the game unless you grind. By the end you're likely leveled at max/close to on all three stats. The island (3rd) and ocean (5th) palaces are the hardest for me because relative to the strength of the enemies you find there, you're underleveled.

>> No.4284585

>>4283952
Unforgivable is why it's so good. It demands perfection from the player. It isn't dumbed down for weak people like most games. For the most part levels are well designed because, if you know what you're doing, you can get through most of them without taking any damage.

GnG is hard but not overly so. Thing is that we're older and I dunno about you guys but running head first into video game brick walls for hours in retro games loses its appeal fast. I'm currently playing through Radiant Silvergun but I don't know if I want to actually sit and hash the game out enough to beat it because I'm nearing 30 and value my time much more these days.

>Even the most fucked up RNG is ultimately deterministic.

No shit, but that's completely irrelevant when you actually play Ghouls 'n Ghosts. You're not really going to manipulate or predict when and where a randomized enemy will spawn any more than you would control random crits in an RPG by selecting "attack" on the correct frame. In practice the game involves lots of reactive play even after you've gotten good enough to one life clear it.
