I want to play this game but I feel like I'm doing it wrong. So I'm standing with a pistol right behind some guy waiting for the reticle to get as small as it can and I shoot the guy in the back of the head.

There is no right way. The designed the game so you could tackle most situations in 3 different ways - mindless killing, stealth or hacking (irrc that was the third way, I could be wrong)

Thats the thing though, when I try to explore these options I feel like I'm doing it wrong. I do the tutorial and learn how guns work, but in practice they don't work like how they told me. Its understanding the basic game mechanics so I can explore the world properly is whats throwing me off.

If you are going to shoot everyone, just run 'n' gun it. Don't bother with sneaking unless you're going to let them live.

The game's only serious flaw is the horrendous AI. As soon as one guy knows where you are, all the of the enemies on the map know where you are. Don't try to sneak and kill.

Sneak and kill works just fine if you snipe from a high point with good cover. Or hide behind a door and keep closing it on them, eventually their "alarm state" will turn off, then you can go out and shoot them again.

Stun as in unconsious? That will just be a waste of ammo. And the most quiet way to stun them is to cattle prod all the way, and EMP mines for bots. Also remember you can prod MJ12 commandos by zapping them on the "belt" area behind them.

What? Other platforms (read: consoles) get to enjoy the luxury of allowing romhacks/rereleases made in the post 2000 era, as well as functioning commercial releases for those platforms in the post 2000 era. The entire Dreamcast library is allowed to be talked about on /vr/ (as far as I remember) despite the fact that it's a 6th gen console with releases that happened well into the 00's.

For PCs it actually makes complete sense to base allowance of PC game releases on what operating systems they can run on, rather than by release date.

Or do the autists on this mongolian flipbook discussion forum really think that Deus Ex running on Unreal Engine 1 or Thief 2 running on the Dark Engine that are both totally able to run on Windows 98 are somehow different from Unreal or Thief 1 released in 1998, and are closer to GTA Vice City on PS2, Halo 1 on Xbox, Super Mario Sunshine on GC, etc.

The rule is fucking stupid and caveats obviously need to be made for PC. Nglide is good for glide only games, but deux ex is not one of those. Anyone have trouble running this game on modern hardware? I recently bought it on Steam, and anytime I look at a large open area or even the smallest particle effect, my FPS fucking nosedives. Granted, I have a budget laptop, but it can run Fallout 4 at a consistent 30fps on the lowest settings, so a 17-year old game shouldn't be giving it any issues.
