I can't believe I let you saps talk me into it.

Now I'm sitting here with a PS1 and a Sega Mega Drive, able to a mere fraction of the games I can play on an emulator, dealing with region locks, NTSC/PAL issues, copy protection trouble, CD burning issues, flashcart slowness and load errors, decaying and squishy, unresponsive controllers and and shitty TV picture quality just to be able to say I'm playing on the real thing.

God damn. 16 year old me who sold all his old consoles in favor of emulation was somehow smarter than 30 year old me who bought them all back because some randos online told him it was the 'superior' experience.

I feel like a fucking schmuck.

Most of my retro "recollection" has been from liquidating my excess. I've moved over the years, and am a fan of boxing and forgetting. Ends up I have 4 psx, 2 still in boxes (used). All of them I picked up new over the years. Been trading them away, and its been fun. TVs that are perfect cost $15 or less. They weight a ton however.

I use my wii to run atarii/nes/snes/genesis etc. I am still looking for an SNES. N64 with ED, and PSX with gameshark flashed to unirom. I am able to play every game I played growing up. 3 systems.

PSX with a UNIrom flash cart will play any region. I have never had a cd burn fail, and always use the generic "Staples" brand cd-r. If your controllers are dying, time for newer ones or just find replacement parts...Sometimes cleaning does the trick. If you are brave, you can take apart the entire controller, put all the plastic parts in a mesh bag and run them in the dishwasher. NO ELECTRONICS obviously lol.

N64 never looked well emulated. Hell only the 2D consoles can be emulated well IMO. Its worth it to have a n64 and ps1(or ps2 fat with ps1 discs). My PSX is modded but the drive crapped out so it won't even read games anymore. I still have my PS2 fat as well, actually just hooked it up the other day to play through King's Field The Ancient City again; problem is it hasn't played PS1 games or the blue discs for quite some time and since I have a PS3 I just play my PS1 games on there or I use PSX 1.13 on my desktop for imports. It kinda sucks because I really wanted to go back and play time TimeSplitter and WinBack but I can't even tried that tape trick, didn't work. As for the N64, I still have it but it won't read any of my games, I think it has something to do with the pin connectors and I'm too electronically retarded to even figure it out without breaking something, but I've tried a few emulators for the N64 and I actually like it better because I can use a normal controller and even mouse and keyboard for shooters. Either way its not that big of a change for me as opposed to the Saturn which doesnt really have any decent emulators and you can only play a few games on it. All in all, it's great to have the system and play the real game with the real hardware but with the older stuff its not like youre missing a great deal with emulation. Just do whatever works for you and enjoy it.

>shitty TV picture quality

Lol you're dumb. You can get an NTSC PS1, PS1 Gameshark, Genesis, and Mega Everdrive for like $100 if you know how to buy. Region problems can be solved with console modding, though there's not a lot of great PAL exclusives and the NTSC versions of games are usually better. Top of the line consumer Trinitrons go for like $20 nowadays, so that will solve your video problem. Unless you don't like CRTs in which case why are you playing on console?

Sounds like you made a couple of uninformed purchases and are now trying to blame /vr/. Real hardware really isn't significantly better the emulation; it's just a different flavor that some people prefer.

>> No.4282348

>as a media format, it's awful and degrades

This is true, though properly cared for records on properly set up equipment don't degrade that fast. Put them on a shitty crosley or with too heavy weight (or not aligned) on the needle and it's damn bad on them. Kind of like cleaning an NES cart with steel wool vs. q-tips and alcohol.

I'd like to add, the other thing with vinyl is, some of the masters on it just sound much better than other sources.

Beatles Sgt. Peppers initial UK pressing in mono sounds unearthly. Even the recent Beatles 44.1khz FLAC USB that was supposed to be a definitive issue sounds like shit when compared on on one with a clean minty copy of the first pressing. The Beatles themselves said the mono pressing was the only real one, the stereo didn't involve them in the mastering and sounds a lot worse.

I know sound is subjective, but there was a MSFL boxed set that goes for stupid money now, like $3k or some such nonsense. It was released years ago. It was ripped by Dr. Roberts on some top tier audio equipment. If you can find those files floating around, they sound much better than the ~$600 USB collection. Just better dynamic range and it seems like the USB ones just sound worse.

Now, if you take a digitally recorded album and put it on vinyl, the digital files will obviously sound better. It's not every album either. A lot of records were really shitty pressings on thin ass vinyl that were simply a commercial commodity, with no thoughts towards best quality.

But yeah, the biggest draw is the artwork, and it's just kind of fun to play a record, seems like more of a ritual than pressing play.

Cycle accuracy only matters if you're a hardcore autist like byuu. If it plays fine and looks fine and sounds fine, then I'd consider that good emulation. Not perfect, but good.

I feel sorry for you OP, but you should know better. While /vr/ is my favorite board hands down, I don't fall for their "collector"/"superior experience" meme. I have a minimalist lifestyle and I'm still able to enjoy retro vidya thanks to emulators.

My advice? You should just sell all the consoles and games you got, take this money and save it for something more important. Or if you want to spend with game-related stuff, but a snes controller for you computer or something like that. You may not recover everything you spent, but it's better than nothing. I have a 2006 duo core notebook and I can comfortably play NES, SNES, PSX, GB, GBC, GBA and many other retro games on emulators. Hope I helped you at least a bit.

Same reason Wii U didn't get any Gamecube VC despite being completely capable of playing those games. Hackers found a way to inject Nintendont into Wii VC games. The only way this could be true is if you're dumb enough to be playing your retro consoles on a modern TV, in which case I have no sympathy for you because you're retarded. A CRT TV looks infinitely better for retro consoles because it can do true 240p and has way better black levels.
