I loved how Manfred Trenz didn't give a shit about the playtesters who were concerned about the difficulty.
As long as he could beat it on a single life then it was easy enough.
A shame that he more or less fell into complete obscurity.

Perhaps more of a shooter / puzzle hybrid. It was less about shooting down enemies than it was figuring out how to advance to the next screen. You have limited quantities of weapons, and have to use them functionally to surmount the various obstacles the game places in your path. On harder modes, you'll have to sacrifice a few ships just to replenish your weaponry.

Also, no mention of Centipede or Millipede?

Oh, right. Post-2nd gen. Although I think Millipede may be third-generation. The NES port was nice.

It's up there as one of the best shmups on the C64. Unfortunately it's also not a very good game.

>Cybernoid
Horrible joyless shit. The worst part is the endless bits where you have to go through the little "mazes" of enemies that constantly move up and down. Only you don't maintain position when not touching the controls, so you have to repeatedly tap up or you just fall straight into them. It's like a Parkinson's simulator. Complete anti-fun that the nice graphics and music can't disguise from the stink of a turd.

Everything I've seen of this just seems far worse than the ZX Spectrum version I grew up playing. The rooms of enemies would be kind of randomised placement/movement and not only could you farm them for required crystals but you could get past them easier. The timing through those crushers was still a bitchwhore though.

Loved its ingame tune.

These look interesting. Any of them worth playing?

>> No.4324305

>>4324232
Hydorah and Blue Revolver are both extremely high quality. Hydorah is similar to Gradius and Blue Revolver is based on Cave bullet hell games, but both do enough of their own thing to stand on their own. Hydorah is freeware but there's a paid version called Super Hydorah with local multiplayer. I haven't tried it though.

Jamestown is another Cave-style bullet hell and I don't think it's quite as good as Blue Revolver, but it's not bad. It has local multiplayer for up to four players. It's a nice way to introduce people to the genre. There's an updated version called Jamestown+ and I have no idea what it changes.

Blue Revolver and Jamestown have multiple difficulty settings, which is nice if you're new to danmaku. Hydorah only has one difficulty but it's approachable enough.
