The 2600 is maybe more significant with more solid exclusives but the 8-bit line is tragically overlooked and the XEGS is a nice little package, one that I actually passed on buying for under $20. At the time I was unaware that practically every 5200 title is also on XE and I regret focusing on the wrong console.

In all reality, the 5200 and 7800 should have never existed and Atari should have focused hard on the XEGS and maybe developed something capable of competing with SMB.

Then they never even attempted to consolize the ST even though the Falcon would have probably been more successful than Jaguar. They NEVER had a horse in the pivotal 4th gen though.

I firmly believe that if Atari had taken the time to revamp the 7800 and release it a year later with a POKEY chip on the board and the euro-style controllers instead of joysticks it would have been a really solid rival to the NES.
