1: I've learned virtually nothing from my efforts.
2: Despite my initial humble requests; I have been denied.
3: Even though following romero's design princible; supposedly people keep copy-and-pasting the same old
4: Instead of a much-more-helpful-person-to-person interaction or visual aid; the usual responce is just a pasting to the Wiki.
5: The "help" I normally get is just 'witty' remarks, vague statements, or just outright sarcasm

to respond to some points raised during map20: yes all those secrets were set intentionally, not as the result of errant sector-splitting. they make sure the player - assuming he wants 100% kills/secrets - crosses all the necessary lines, so all the necessary walls lower, and all the teleporters are activated. couldn't use voodoo doll conveyors, and didn't have time to make the vanilla equivalent as i've not done them before. admittedly some of the secret sectors ended up superfluous, and i could have reset them, but i thought it was funny and left it. finally, i really enjoyed the bit where you trying to think where you'd seen that shape before, and the subsequent reaction. thanks for the playthrough/review.

The kick on the left is better, but that's a screen effect. Also the tweeny stretch on the lefty's sight looks like shit.

Right would completely blow the left out of the water if the kick was more jarring and gave more of an impression of pushing into the player.

Playing through some stuff on Quaddicted I've had open in another tab for weeks so I can finally close the tabs and forget about 'em.

Does /vr/ play with mipmapping enabled or disabled? I've always played with it off, straight gl_nearest mode; I tried turning it on and it looks alright but stands out heavily against any model or brush bits in front of the blurred textures, as I play without anti-aliasing so those edges are still sharp and pixelated.

Arachnotrons are weird. Yoiu first encounter them expecting some slightly weaker Spider Mastermind but instead you get a slightly annoying plasma turret that dies fairly quickly.

Yeah, and with something like explaining berserk packs (and the misconception of how long they last) I could even branch into a short bit explaining gibbing and how much damage is needed to gib an enemy, just tossing in extra minor trivia info like that when appropriate. this is a really good map. it starts off a bit slowly but opens up into a huge flooded city that's great to run around. uses stock textures so it actually looks like a doom level. sometimes not obvious where to go or what the last switch you pressed did, a problem endemic to this kind of city map, of course. some height differences are too extreme for autoaim. but otherwise i really like this map.

I'm now up to The Room Out Of Shape in 300mins, and I'm really liking the wad so far.
The best map I've come across is Blue Sanctuary, because it's a really cool little map and the sunken ruins thing made me think of SNES games for some reason. I made the Arch-Vile and Baron encounter a little too easy for myself by stumbling on the rocket launcher secret, but considering how much I hate Archies I was pretty happy with that.
Conception is the weakest so far, because dear lord, I'm bad at Doom and it's my first attempt at playing pistol starts in UV, and even I didn't need all those thousands of medkits and ammo laying around the place. It's also too dark and never really goes anywhere.

Slash's slide will get completely fucked up if the map has even the slightest height variation, apparently, which means most of Burial Chamber and all over the place on Sarnath. I got the idea while working on giving a sprite a normal map (which worked well). Each (horizontal rotation) sprite includes all vertical rotations in a horizontal line, and the shader offsets the coordinates based on the vertical angle between the player and it.

glad you enjoyed anon. It was made in 5 hours alright, but there was some minor tweaking for balance after the time limit. Sometimes maps just work out when you have a strong idea/premise. I wanted to go for abandoned tomb complex a la indiana jones, with a theme of water and stucco.
