This game was a lot of fun and I was excited when it came out. This game literally pioneered online console multiplayer. Name another game that was as played on xbox live as this. I miss playing custom maps and games, who else remembers playing troy on blood gulch and seeing all the brute shots in the air? Then trying to melee other players, or saving your brute shot and trying to kill players like that.

In general, probably never. There are some modern good games however, like MH, Octopath, Shantae, Shovel Knight and Dark Souls. Every now and then, something that appeals to your tastes. We might not live in the same scene as when we were kids, but it's not all bad.

I'd hardly use Earthbound as an example of the pinnacle of quality games. It's a very niche series with many linear aspects that would bore most gamers to death.

Modern gaming isn't that terrible, but the existence of DLC, licensed garbage and social media integration is far more pervasive than it should be. Elder Scrolls, Souls, Fallout and some modern FPS are all still mostly good series, albeit not completely infallible. I don't currently own any consoles past the sixth generation, however. Despite still having some interest in the aforementioned series, I find there are more than enough 10/10 retro games to tide me over.

I think my concerns with modern gaming are more along the lines of the typical people who play these games - or at least claim to play them. I suspect they spend more free time engaged in online drama over the video game industry and the people behind it rather than they do actually participating in the hobby.

This is true, pso was huuuuge. Halo was just the transition of online shooters from just pc to a large amount on console as well. Which did prove to be a pretty influential change.
