Are there any VNs on the level of Yu-no?
Between the dithered art, the excellent sound design and the 90s aesthetics, is there anything that could deliver an experience that comes even a bit close to it in quality?

Kanon Platform, Enterprise Edition (Kanon EE) builds on the solid foundation of Kanon Platform, Standard Edition (Kanon SE) and is the industry standard for implementing enterprise-class shoujo-oriented architecture (SOA) and next-generation visual novels. The SDKs contain Key AyuShiori Enterprise Server, previously named Key Kanon Shoujo Application Server, and provide support for Kanon EE 5 specifications.

Kanon Platform, Enterprise Edition or Kanon EE is a widely used platform for visual novel programming in the Kanon programming language. The Kanon platform (Enterprise Edition) differs from the Kanon Standard Edition Platform (Kanon SE) in that it adds libraries which provide functionality to deploy fault-tolerant, distributed, multi-tier Kanon visual novels, based largely on modular components running on an application server.

The platform was known as Kanon 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition or K2EE until the name was changed to Kanon EE in version 5. The current version is called Kanon EE 5. The previous version is called K2EE 1.4.

Kanon EE is defined by its specification. As with other Kanon Community Process specifications, Kanon EE is also considered informally to be a standard since providers must agree to certain conformance requirements in order to declare their products as Kanon EE compliant; albeit with no ISO or ECMA standard.

Japan has a very, very terrible habit of doing that. Especially eroge developers.

Sengoku Rance's intro; spoils Kouhime joining, several reappearing characters, Sill getting iced, Kentarou and Miki, Miki becoming the Demon King, the Apostles, the final boss theme, the Demon Army, Orochi, and the ending CG of Isoroku's route.

Corpse Party spoils a few deaths, as does Danganronpa, Metal Gear Solid 2 spoils Raiden and Snake teaming up at the end of the game, and so on. I get you should be showing things from the game, but there's a massive difference between making the player think "Oh, she betrays us" and thinking "How the fuck does THAT come about?"

I dunno, I really loved DESIRE (Al's route primarily). Then there was Eve, which was basically DESIRE, reskinned into a hardboiled MalteseFalcon-ish mystery, only with a thrice as much filler, as DESIRE's Al's route had. And then, Yu-No. Which was ANOTHER DESIRE reskin, only with EVEN MORE filler than Eve had. And halfway through the main part of the game (Eriko and mother-in-law chicks done) I was, like, "fuck it a thousand times, I am outta here".

Still, the epilogue intrigues me, and maybe, I'll watch it via YouTube without completing the main part of the game.

That being said, other than Yu-No's epilogue, Xenon and Exodus Guilty still do interest me as well.

On the DxWnd front, best I have so far is running it windowed at 960p.

The ideal scenario would be having it fullscreen in either 960p, or 1440p with the sides trimmed to make it display nice on a 1080p monitor. 960p windowed is pretty playable though, and I prefer it to the blurry mess I get otherwise (thanks Nvidia).

While this is a pretty good game, still nothing can come close to 街~運命の交差点~ (Machi: The Intersection of Fate) as far a writing goes. That has some of the best and most memorable lines I've seen in a VN and I've played almost every one of the old school Sound Novels there are on FC/SFC/PSX/Saturn/etc. Even the sequel to Machi, 428~封鎖された渋谷で~ was amazing, but who know what the fuck Famitsu was thinking giving it a perfect score, there are definitely some gameplay features that are really fucking annoying. But those aren't in anime style use still images of real actors.

Actually a pretty unknown game outside of Japan is the Yarudora series, you can find it on PSX or on PSP whichever you prefer. They have that 90s anime feel to them and I know most people that play VNs play it so they have some cartoon girls to wank off too and don't give a shit about anything else so the latter game would be right up that alley.

One thing I've noticed in a lot of these threads is people just bitching about Japanese or trying to sound like the authroity above everyone else and not really going around knowing or recommending other similar games or talking about them

DxWnd dev is a helpful dude. The game plays/looks great in 960p windowed and 960p "kinda fullscreen but not really". The latter is mostly fullscreen although the taskbar is still showing. Sadly, it looks like there's no way to get true fullscreen (ie without the taskbar) but I'd argue this is better than the default windowed/fullscreen modes in the game.

My endgame now is to make it run in 1440p. The game has thick black bars at the top/bottom, so you'd essentially lose nothing if you were to crop them to run on a 1080p monitor. This would basically let you play the game in proper fullscreen, albeit with the pesky taskbar still there (can always hide it if it's really annoying I suppose).

>> No.4238265

>>4238238
I might be being retarded about the black bar thing. It would still crop a littttle bit of the game window, but possibly not enough to disrupt gameplay.

> Settings for 960p (fullscreen with taskbar)
> Main settings tab:
-'Run in Window' checked
-'Hide desktop background' checked
-'Keep aspect ratio' checked
-'Desktop center' mode selected
-Under 'Window initial position & size', set W = 1280 and H = 960

> Video settings tab
- Under 'Window style' select 'modal'

And that should be all you need to do.

> Settings for 960p (windowed)
Same as above, however uncheck 'Hide desktop background' and keep the Window style as 'default' in the video tab.

>> No.4238285

>>4238265
Can confirm I'm being completely retarded about the black bar thing. Unfortunately the black bars aren't large enough, so playing it at 1440p on a 1080p monitor would result in a not insignificant portion of the image being cut from view.

After I listened to it, I badly want to play the game, the music was so great that I wanted to see what it was from. It took me years to play it due to forgetting it existed. Still not sure what sparked me to just straight up download and play it, but I'm assuming it was a thread like this. I remember going in not knowing much more than it being a mystery story with some time travel aspects, boy was my mind blown.

I've been a Yu-no fanatic ever since.

No, that's me. And I think there's always a point in shilling games like this, even if they were completely dead. It's a seminal game in the VN/point-and-click adventure genres and that should be enough reason to promote it and discuss it. Honestly everyone who is into either of those genres should have at least tried to play this game.

About the anime though, I'm not sure how good it will be. The artstyle is pretty much that of the remake, which isn't very well liked and they will probably neuter a lot of the more edgy content. I've browsed through the manga a bit and found that to be alright-ish so far.

One day, in fall 2014, I decided to browse eroge music on YouTube, just to hear what it was generally like. Most of it was average-to-good with appropriately accessible and catchy melodies, but then I clicked on a YU-NO track.

From the way the chord progressions and melodies were constructed, I could instantly tell it was made by someone with a VERY high intelligence. Like, I predicted that nothing I would read about the composer would surprise me. A few frantic Google searches later I was reading articles about Ryu Umemoto, whose math skills and work ethic were described therein:

https://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/178187/memorial_composer_ryu_umemoto.php
http://www.originalsoundversion.com/r-i-p-ryu-umemoto-1974-2011-memories-of-a-friend/

>This was also due to how Umemoto employed math in his music. Starting with EVE, his music was composed on Zen foundations, with scale and key changes applied at the rising or decreasing angle of either a temple or mountain of spiritual importance, or with time signatures corresponding with meditative breathing rhythms and lucky numbers.

After first clearing a couple of games I was still in the middle of, I played YU-NO, and not only was the soundtrack amazing but I also loved the story, convoluted but doable gameplay, pixel art, basically everything.

The question is how many episodes they get.
In a single cours they can't do much more than handle the prologue and a single linear route.
In a second cours they could mix up the other routes.
The epilogue might be best served as an OVA/movie.

I played through it about 3 years ago? Left an impression in me. All the girls had soul, all the scenes were pretty (Besides the hanging one). I got scared, I got excited and ultimately had to resort to the walkthrough since I ended up being killed by Mitsuki over and over again. Still, with the walkthrough, I still got about 60 hours in (I´m a slow reader.). Nothing has been the same since, really. No other VN had this much depth to go along with humor. Why did the MC bone like 90% of women he met? I mean, during the second part (after the puzzle) he pretty much fucked anyone he talked or "saved". That was a bit weird.

Anyways, who is best girl in your opinion /vr/? Will you also try the remake?

There's 4 routes in the main portion of the game, each one takes 8-10 hours. Significantly less if you use a walkthrough. The pacing is really good, as there's surprisingly little filler or repetition (aside from one branch that duplicates half of Kanna's route). After that comes the epilogue, which is somewhat longer than any main route.

>> No.4247885

I just read the short story this game was inspired by, I didn't fully get it, but here is a summary:
1/2
The story includes many seemingly unrelated threads told in omniscient narration, ultimately connecting them with offhand mentions and details. The threads can be categorized as: events on earth, events in an alien community known as the Concord, and descriptions of non-physical concepts.

A man, William Sterog, goes on a killing spree. He poisons two hundred people with an insecticide stolen from a pest control man, kills a hundred people on a jet flight by means of a time bomb planted in his mother's suitcase, and shoots 44 people on the stadium with machine gun, before he is arrested.

In presumably the far future, an expedition from Earth discovers a new planet with a 37-foot-tall (11 m) statue on it. The statue has an alien but beatific face. The figure is wearing a toga and grasping a strange object. The narration notes that the statue's expression is the very same that Sterog had when the judge sentenced him to death at his final court hearing.

The narration then goes on to describe a concept known as "Crosswhen" which it described as possibilities, outcomes, distance, and time all "beyond human thought."

>> No.4247887

>>4247885
2/3 (oops)
Next, a violent and insane seven-headed dragon is captured and "drained" using a technique invented by an alien man named Semph. The dragon is described as being "crosswhen" to another subject referred to as "the maniac." The narration leaves it ambiguous to whether or not the maniac and the dragon are two distinct beings or perhaps even two distinct consciousness of the same mind. Semph talks with his rival, Linah, about the nature of the "draining." Semph argues that draining has possible consequence to others elsewhere while Linah, arguing on behalf of a community known as the Concord, argues that it is a necessary risk to insure their own survival, even at the expense of others. The dragon is drained and the remnant, left behind following the draining, is a man. Semph then reveals that he has sent the drained aspects ("dangerous essences") elsewhere, not contained in a tank as planned. He alludes to these elements as part of an unelaborated "field." A panicked Linah demands to know where the aspects have been sent to.

The narration goes on to tell of the historical meeting between Pope Leo I and Attila the Hun in 452. The details of the meeting are uncertain, but the result was that Attila did not attack Rome as he had done to other cities. The narration notes that the city had been attacked forty years earlier by Alaric the Goth and three years later by King Gaiseric. The narration implies connection of these actions (and Attila's inaction) as connected to the "field" and the drained mind of the seven-headed-dragon with randomness through time (or Djam Karet).

>> No.4247890

>>4247887
3/3
Semph is tried by the Concord, and is sentenced to be executed for his actions during the draining. In a final conversation with Linah, the nature of the draining is revealed to be extraction and condensation of insanity into a vapor-like form, from organisms. The vapor is usually sent outside Concord's domain (referred to as "the center") and sent elsewhere (referred to as "out there"). While Semph was against this protocol for the possibility that it affected other races (i.e., people on Earth), Linah sided with it to safeguard the Concord. The field mentioned earlier is a metaphysical entity that pulses with violence and madness; the aliens beings of the Concord have been "draining" madness from their world and sending it to the Earth. As per tradition, after the execution, Linah builds a memorial for Semph which is implied to be the statue mentioned earlier.

The last thread deals with a near-mad man who finds a box in the ruins of a city as he searches for food. He opens the box, releasing a wisp of purple violent smoke into the air, likely the vapor. The next day World War IV starts.

Is the game's plot anything like it?

Ever since playing YU-NO, I've wanted to play it (and Desire and Xenon), but only once I've learned Japanese so I can play the original PC-98 version. From what I've heard, the English Windows port has a harshly criticized translation, and the music is in General MIDI instead of FM synthesis which Umemoto is known for.

I've been aware of EVE's existence far longer than YU-NO's, but only had thought of it as "yet another possibly silly H-game" - now I genuinely want to play it some day.

If it makes you feel any better the asenheim project, which is a website that hosts various retro VNs you can play in your browser, allows you to play eve with the pc-98 soundtrack(It's actually taken from EVE burst error THE PERFECT, which is an album that takes the good parts of the 26K and 86 soundtracks and puts them together. It also features a couple of very sweet remixes by Umemoto himself).

I mean, even now, after 3 years after playing it, I remember the girls, their issues and their faces. Each had their own faults and perks. That's why I asked who is best girl, since I'm on the fence myself.

And it's not even about the sex scenes. Sure I enjoyed them (except the one after you gather all the stones and the second part of the game starts). Mostly I liked doing the routes since each girl made me interested in them, whether their goal was to reach the insides of Triangle Mountain or just get their insides reached.

I mean, let's evaluate it, ok? you have:

>Mio:

+Nice bobs
+A fucking nerd as well, not afraid of Triangle Mountains
+Good at picross, can't go wrong with that

-Immature
-She has little princess complex
-Her dad
-Takes a whole evening to decide which clothes to use

>Mitsuki:

+Has a good choice of places to fuck
+Will teach you how to sex
+Will take a bullet for you

-She will always want to fuck this other old man on the side, you just "comfort" her
-Nyarb kinda makes her a really risky choice
-She ain't that cute

>Kanna:

+She'll let you sleep in her apartment for free
+You can see her naked and she won't bat an eye like, who cares
+Ages differently, she stays like that for decades

-It's the fucking default mysterious blue haired girl I mean come the fuck on
-Smaller tits
-She a prostitute. She has been used more than probably the rest of the fucking cast

>Kaori:

+Pretty sneaky
+She reads your naughty thoughts and likes it

-She also fucking reads your other thoughts
-Nothing personnel, kid
-Shady as shit

>Ayumi:

+Nice mommy
+Hard working
+Have you seen those motherfucking legs?

-She does not fucking listen
-She seems to like seeing you suffer,
as she knows your intentions fully yet allows Mr. Porn Director control of the script between her legs

-Also suicidal

>Eriko:

+You think "nice tits" and then you get to see her eyes
+Really, really intelligent
+Despite her looks, she doesn't sleep around
+Acts like a good big sis
+She's like a fucking time cop, nothing sexier than that
+Will save your ass more than once

-She smokes
-Actually, screw that. That makes her cool. She has no faults, she's perfect, suck my dick.

I just know that I started off dismissing her as some basic bitch and as she kept revealing how miserable her life is, she became more endearing.

Though I still think her sex scene was forced and had no business being in the game other than the fact it was the end of her routerand eroge formula mandates it so.

>Starting off with this bombshell

Honestly, I imagine this might be the first route for the anime, since it gives the character a reason to keep going back in time to sort shit out a la Steins;Gate.

It was the first route I got, and when it happened I was like "Oh shit, I need to unfuck what just happened immediately." and sort of made me want to play the game more.

Not saying Ayumi should be the main point of the anime, but he could dismiss the reflector at first and as he gets this ending it should be where he learns of the seriousness of the situation and goes back in time for the first time to sort stuff out.

I do wonder if the anime will spark more interest in this game in the west? For better or for worse.

My first route was Kanna's, which also sort of gives you the drive to unfuck things

>> No.4259215

>>4259205

Yeah that's true, but I feel Kanna's route is where the main story begins to unfold and things your father did begin to unravel, Ayumi's is the most detached from the main story when you think about it, and is a good start for Takuya since he gains nothing from the entire route in regards to the main story except the photo that's only really good for that route.

He'd have to do the route twice anyhow to get the Blue Card, unless they change that. Which makes me wonder how they'd handle having to do several routes several times over. They can't lock into one route and make shit just magically help Takuya, he needs to go through each of the routes many times.

I kinda doubt it to be honest. Seeing how the franchise has been ignored for so long now. I mean, I had to translate the soundtrack myself and now have to put together the manga as well.

I think it's natural to start with Ayumi though, she's the most closely related to Takuya and if you just follow his directions at the start of the game, you will actually roll into the Ayumi route.

From how I've seen it for anime, two things will usually happen for the game/manga or whatever it's being adapted from.

It'll explode in popularity from getting an anime, since people don't want to read a manga, or in this case play a VN from 1995 and a lot of idiots will be attracted to the fandom. It's hard to know if Yu-no has the ability to do this, but things like Steins;Gate and Clannad were able to, so I wouldn't say it's impossible.

Or it'd just fade into the background like a lot of great anime/manga no matter how great it is, such as Kaiji. It got two seasons and then faded into just being "that gambling anime" and soon enough Kakegurui will be taking that spot. If it does fade into the background, it'd probably be an offhand anime recommendation for people who want something "like Steins;Gate" and nothing else will come of it

It's hard to really know since the west never got Yu-No in any form, and this could be the first time it'll have some interest over here

>> No.4259247

Same, although it would be nice if it became something like Kaiji if it does get an increase in fan base. It's hardly tainted and if someone tells you they like Kaiji, you can usually gauge they have a good taste in anime, in a similar manner, if someone told you they liked Yu-No, and played the game because of it you could tell they have a good taste in anime and possibly vidya.

If it does become the former, the best that would come of it would probably be some nice fanart, and the manga might get an actual translation, but it's hard to know if it's worth it.

So what was your choice when it came to the Jukebox?

I always left it on Clair de Lune, because I felt it was the more appropriate choice, I was pretty shocked being the ignorant person I am towards classical music when I heard the entire Clair de Lune track, since I had never listened to it beyond a few seconds.

"Yui Narusawa" is a remix of Yui Narusawa's theme from Doukyuusei 2 (pic related). "Lower Grade Girl" is a remix of Kakyuusei's Town theme. For some reason the Sega Saturn version ports over the Yui remix but uses the existing Sega Saturn version of the Kakyuusei Town theme for some reason. Maybe it's because the melody is pretty much the same as the original for Town but greatly expanded for Yui's theme since the original theme is really fucking basic.

Al's route seems good at first, but only because you're expecting the game to tie up all the loose ends in the other routes, which it doesn't, so it ends up being just okay. This might also only apply to me but Desire's world feels really, really empty and dead, especially compared to Eve and YU-NO. Also, you might think it's "filler" but scenes that are more fun and have the characters interact with each other rather than only advance the plot are needed, IMO, so the game doesn't end up feel boring and monotonous.

Actually, lemme rant about Desire a bit:
Why the fuck is this game so reserved about demonstrating its plot elements? You barely hear or see anything about the reactor. You don't even see Gustav use the DNA alternation thing on someone in real time. You never really see Martina doing any real work on the reactor, either. Not to mention, the game doesn't even bother to show at least two of the time loops Martina's been through, like every fucking other Groundhog Day-type story out there. And why the fuck is Makoto's route about her getting fucked by Chad? It would have been so much more interesting if it were about her being involved in Gustav's research and seeing the reactor's DNA alteration capabilities in action. She could have been like a counterpart to Albert in a sense, since he was closer to Martina and was affected by the reactor's other feature, its dimension travel capabilities, directly.

HL2 definitely doesn't compare to Kanno's mastery at putting on the airs and pulling "intrigue" out of his ass with little to nothing actually happening, due purely to how much pretty much everyone in his eludes answering even the simplest of questions.

Which aren't smalltalk, of course - meaning "completely unrelated to the actual plot". THOSE questions his characters actually DO answer more than willingly.

I did, with a pen and paper, from scratch. It was pretty fun, even though this got https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXEi3mNkO-k kinda old after a couple of minutes.

Took me way longer than just a day, too, since I haven't done any Picross prior.

>This reads like the start to a copypasta, kek

Anything where anon goes on about his own intelligence makes good pasta. I know he was technically talking about the composer's intelligence, but it's implied that anon also believes himself to be VERY intelligent since he was able to detect the composer's intelligence just by listening to an eroge OST on youtube

I liked the music to be honest, it added to the whole experience for me. >>4246127 was how I solved it.

I didn't know any Picross stuff, for me it was all about learning what was right and wrong. Initially I thought it had something to do with the signs (4 lines = number 4) but instead each symbol represented a number, and so I started from scratch from there.

Then I attempted it, learning what the symbols meant and knowing it had to be symmetrical were my only hurdles.

Still it was really fun and reminded me of Silent Hill 1-3.

I played plenty of picross, the hardest part for me was finding out which numbers were which because I didn't even take the time to find the goddamn laptop.

Well, and that I was used to crossing out squares that shouldn't be filled and that feature wasn't there, of course.

One of the ending's in Mitsuki's route has a device that teleports you to a random spot in the timeline, so you could go there first and repeatedly trigger it until you get reasonable close to another timeline's ending or another desirable scene. Even arriving to the halfway point of a route is a massive time saver. That's what I did.

Well, people have theorized this device is what Ryuuzouji stole from Abel's/Eriko's research lab to escape to our universe. However, it's also said in the game that said device broke down and that's probably why it always send you somewhere random

>people have theorized
That's what is stated in the game though. The entity came to Sakaimachi with the device and is trying to get a hold of the rare mineral to power the device again. So most likely it can only be used for small displacements now. As for why Takuya always ends up at one of the routes? It's fate/the mirror.
