So, my tour of the Armageddon's blade campaigns is finished. I must say, they seemed way harder when I played them as a kid 10+ years ago.

I'm going to give the Shadow of Death campaigns a go in a couple of days, but I need a break for now. IN the meantime, any reccs for any of them? Any particular order I should take the first four? I did play them, but a LONG time ago.

Also, I can't remember; I know that you have one campaign each for Gem, Gelu, Yog, and Crag Hack, and then you have the Sandro one, and then you have the one where the four of your heroes do their part against Sandro. Does it actually transfer your guys from the end of their individual campaigns, or are you stuck with new guys with shitty skill setups? If it's the latter, are their any editors that would allow you to change them? I'm going to be sinking a fair amount of time in building these heroes up, and it would be annoying to have it erased.

Only level transfers, not skills, stats or spells. Skills and spells you can change with in-game cheat menu (/nwcgrail), but stats you're stuck with. If you edit starting stats in editor, it tends to break the map triggers.

If the game tells you repeatedly in mission briefings that all your skills, spells and stats will carry over and then they don't because of bugs, you have the right to flip the game off.

If you were to make a new faction, what would it be?

Castle - humans/knights/heaven
Rampart - sylvan creatures/forest
Tower - weird shit/wizards/snowy mountains
Fortress - beast folk/lizards/swamp
Stronghold - orcs/goblins/badlands
Inferno - demons/devils/hell
Necropolis - undead/wasteland
Dungeon - underdark shit
Conflux - faggy elementals

As a kid, I wanted to make an egyptian themed faction for the desert, but I saw a russian fan-made one a while back, so it's been done.

>> No.4234517

>>4234492
Thats a hard one. Making an entirely new faction with nothing in common with the others.

I like fairies, but like full magical crazy creatures and not halfway or partially like Rampart and Conflux. Where every single unit is magical in nature with odd strengths and weaknesses. No "civilized" people allowed, elves wearing armor and riding flying horses? No thanks. The entire faction doesn't have to be "good" either, it could be filled with terrible things that go bump in the night that inspire fear and terror in those who would trespass into their haunted magical forest.

So the faction can start out as somewhat whimsical but the higher tier units get progressively more dark until the tier 7 unit is some sort of monstrosity I cant decide upon.

Well, yes, naturally, that's what they were going for with the artstyle as a whole. They wanted to sell it to normies and "realistic" 3D graphics was becoming the thing at the time and so the whole fairytale aesthetic had to go. Shame, especially considering they sort of reverted to that in 4.

Enemies randomly attack any of your characters that get in melee, but prefer ones that started the monster attack phase of the round conscious. What gets dangerous is anything that can attack all characters at once. They need to be dropped ASAP.

To determine which of your guys is in melee, you will see a mark by their number in combat. Usually randomly the first 3 or so start out in melee, but if you are surprised then all 6 are. Due to how dangerous unconscious is make sure to keep healing items around and make sure to have everyone back up by the end of the round. Remember that the speed statistic determines when someone attacks in the round so make sure to heal the person just below the current character (ties go to the person earlier in the party).

Ok I booted it up and this is slightly wrong. Monsters basically get a list of who is in melee at the start of their turn. They will attack anything in that list, but if it gets knocked out they will skip that character and then move on. If it was knocked out before the current monster phase then it is still a potential target. If all of the melee characters were knocked out by monsters this turn the monsters will advance and put all player characters into melee.

This means if you start out the monster turn with a melee character unconscious he is a potential target, but if he starts out conscious he won't be killed unless the monster has some sort of AoE/breath attack, in which case you better kill it fast. Jugglers in MM2 in particular are incredibly nasty as they will switch character order AND have an AoE attack.

Can someone PLEASE give me advice on the second Crag Hack mission? It is fucking IMPOSSIBLE for me for some reason. Edric is SOOO strong and has 17 defence by week 2, he comes up your anus with 70 griffons, 170 halberdiers and 100+ Archers, and that's on NORMAL difficulty. There is only 1 other Stronghold nearby, and its units are incredibly inconvenient (unupgraded orcs even though you start with upgraded ones), it's at an insane tactical disadvantage at the monolith exit, and the faerie dragons you need to kill are impossible to get by without considerable army losses. Even on Normal difficulty there is NO WAY I can turtle enough because your opponent has 4 (FOUR) castles at his disposal! I had week of the Behemoth and STILL Edric fucked me up BIG time.

What the fuck is the secret to this god damn scenario? I've tried 5 times now, first on hard and now and normal: No luck. Crag is completely statted out from the first mission, and I make sure to get at least 3 heroes total from the tavern.

I forgot to add one of the most important things, although I can't remember if it applies to MM1 or just MM2.

Only the monsters that were in the list (the first 10) at the start of the player's turn are allowed an attack. This means if you start with 20 opponents and kill monsters 3-12 then 1 and 2 will still get an attack phase, and if you kill 1-10 then the next monster attack phase is skipped. This allows you to nuke down the really dangerous ones if you think you can take the hits of the others.

Port - ocean faction (yeah, a one trick pony, fights best on ships and on the beach, shit in hard terrain).

possible units:
- pirates, a fast moving but not very strong unit
- islands native/witch doctors (yeah, go with that) - weak but can curse and shoot
- deep folk
- landsharks, a tough mid tier units with unlimited retaliations, maybe even moral-lowering attacks
- seaweed monsters, entangle like treants
- sea dragons, can fly
- kraken/cthulhu, attacks multiple targets at once like hydra, can make weaker units insane

Mechanus - robot faction (made out of steam, steampunk robots)

Lvl 1 - Musketman (shooter, strongest lvl 1 shooter, but speed 1 only and has 2 shots only)
Lvl 2 - Fixer (standard melee walker, nothing special about him, high defense, low attack, can repair mechanical units he's standing next to)
Lvl 3 - Drone (shooter, flying, high speed, low HP)
Lvl 4 - Scrapper (melee walker, can attack walls and towers, can consume mechanical units to repair and resurrect himself even beyond max stack, destroying walls and towers also does this)
Lvl 5 - Clockwork Knight (fast melee walker)
Lvl 6 - Bomberman (shooter, no range penalty, AoE damage like Lich, but no immunity, explodes on death - free additional retaliation ranged attack)
Lvl 7 - Mechanical Dragon (see Heroes 4, but faster - has special charge ability to move it anywhere across the field once, but suffers speed penalty afterwards)

All units are unaffected by bless / mind spells like Undead.

Avenger is good for 2 reasons:
1) In the endgame you tag 3/7 of your main opponent units as favored enemies. Now your troops have 60% chance to deal double damage to them. Multipliable by luck. Say, you're fighting Necropolis. Select Vampires, Skeletons and Liches. Unleash the dakka.
2) Enchanted Arrow + Rain of Arrows + Druids' Channeling. Enchant your arrows with Meteor Storm. Let your Druids buff your spellpower into stratosphere. Congratulations, you now unleash 3 aoe nukes per turn that bombard entire enemy army, favored enemies or no, while rivaling in damage the warlock's ones. And since rangers get plenty of knowledge, you can keep up at it.

Compare this to gating. You spend 50%/25% of your creatures turns to start summoning. Then it takes 1 full turn for reinforcements to arrive. Then it takes another full turn for them to be able to start acting. All the while your enemy trashes your main units with everything he has since he knows that wiping your not-summoned units out will make you lose instantly. Sure, Succubi with built-in Puppet Master are great, but your racial skill still sucks unlike every other racial skill of every faction in the game.

And damn near all fights require maximum cheese, often only beatable thanks to an item you got previously. (like a scroll of Blind that you have to abuse or some such shit)

I played one of those once and it was absolutely fucking awesome, except for the part that it had an inferno with grail and an enemy spawned on the coast, like it does in that pic, blocking you from being able to land onto the shore and fight them.

1/2

1) gold from chests 99% of the time

2) dont rush capitol. build creatures first. Prioritize the important ones + the upgrades if they are key for your faction (e.g. behemoths are easy week 1 for stronghold, double shooting marksmen/elves are always important to clear early stacks for castle/rampart, fortress can grab wyverns early on, tower should get ranged gremlins/beeline for nagas ASAP, etc) but don’t waste resources on non-essential upgrades early on. Even if you don’t recruit them right away, the more creatures you can generate early, the better. In that regard citadel --> castle should also be a priority to build on days 6 or 7 before start of new week for more soldiers.

3) your hero(s) should always be clearing something, or moving toward your next clear. Like all 4x games, the faster you clear the map, the faster your early advantage will snowball, and you will easily outpace someone who rushes capitol instead of clearing the map, and in general will be able to build capitol by week 3 with relative ease

4) build many heroes early on, give all units to 1 “main” hero, and ensure the “scout” heroes have a nice fast unit, and branch out in many directions to grab free stuff as quickly as humanly possible. Like rushing capitol, turtling is noob-tier.

>> No.4244819

>>4244634
>>4244813

5) learn to chain your heroes so you can clear the map faster and more efficiently (e.g. passing your army along a chain of heroes to move them across big chunks of the map in a single turn). It’s nice to level 1 or 2 main heroes, and that should be a goal, but once again, clearing the map is even better. That XP will come quickly later
6) prioritize what you clear and balance it with how you can move your troops around. 2nd/3rd towns should always be a big priority, mines/resources you need, solid artifacts, and so on. XP is nice but don’t waste time killing things when you can give yourself a bigger advantage elsewhere
7) spells are fun, but haste/slow + expert air/earth is all you really need. Haste is marginally better than slow, given the choice since it allows you to move across the battlefield and potentially end things turn 1
8) don’t underestimate griffon observatories, crypts, dwarven treasuries, etc. they can give a huge boost to resources, and the griffon ones especially reward you angels. Getting a couple angels by week 2 can enable you to clear otherwise impossible encounters with ease, once again enhancing that “snowball” effect
Obviously this will all depend on the map a bit, and you should adjust accordingly. For example if you are playing on a really “poor” map, rushing capitol may actually be a decent idea. but these are general guidelines on most maps.

>> No.4244852

nope, sorry. 3 main reasons why:

1) the difference between a level 1 hero and a level 5 hero (or even higher) is negligible early on. MAYBE if you had a hero with some nice spells and wanted to try to get advanced/expert magic in a particular school fast, but even in that highly specific case it's generally not worth it, since getting early XP simply won't help you clear anything that you might clear otherwise.

2) along those lines, you'll be relying on creatures to clear stacks of course, and to get creatures your need money. that early money is pretty much always the difference between skipping a build day/not recruiting all possible creatures vs. building a dwelling days 1-6 followed by a nice citadel + a fresh army week 2 day 1. it's easy to mop the floor with a level 3 shitter leading an army 1/3 the size it should be.

3) long term, the XP just plain won't matter. a level 20 hero needs 80,000 XP. even assuming you get lucky and let's say you get 10 chests that are all full 1500xp, that's 15,000 xp total, not even enough to go from level 20 to 21. pointless.

in other words, the advantages of gold outweigh the advantages of XP short term, and long term the difference is negligible. obviously if you play on easy or something and start with loads of cash, it matters less, but at that point it doesnt matter what strategy you take.

>> No.4244875

>>4244852

to add to this 1 more thing, you'll get plenty of XP fighting creatures anyway, which means you're just wasting those early chests on pointless XP you don't even need.

It's a strategy game with an impressive amount of depth, but also with a tremendous degree of diplomatic interaction due to the slow pace of the turns since its a PBEM game.

Example of why I fucking love it:
I was playing Mictlan (blood Aztecs). My neighbors were Nifelheim (ice giants), Abyssia (lava people), and Ulm (Conan the barbarians). I receive a message from Ulm proposing an alliance against Abyssia. I accept, and immediately propose an alliance with Nifelheim against Abyssia, Nifelheim accepts. As I'm readying myself for war, Nifelheim jumps the gun and attacks first, Abyssia sends a global message about the treachery of his neighbors. Ulm takes this to mean I've attacked, and attacks ME, thinking my forces are committed. They're not, so I manage to stomp all over his raiding parties and claim a decent amount of his territory before he sues for peace. I'm fine with that, since Nifelheim and Abyssia have torn each other apart and I can start my actual war against Abyssia, which I do profitably. Nifelheim is miffed I didn't help earlier, but I'm way bigger than him now so he doesn't push it. I then turn around and eat the rest of Ulm, but lose the game when Nifelheim gets my neighbors to gang up on me, citing my "treachery" as proof I need to be removed.

>Blatantly stealing the bastion ideas:

Bastion - Neutral Desert Faction

Quicksand moat
Sandstorm siege defense (slows enemy speed by 2)
Monolith (auto-casts quicksand outside of walls at the start of a siege)
White, gleaming gold-tipped pyramid grail buildling flanked by flame-topped pillars (grants additional land movement to all heroes and +1 speed to all units)
Artifact Merchants

Outrider - 1 2 1 2 - scouting/pathfinding (looks like nomad on camel, has turban with gem and feather)
Sorcerer - 1 1 2 2 - sorcery/wisdom (looks like pharoah on chariot - horse not visible, holds cobra staff)
hero sprites cast spells in black

1 - Scarab/Holy Scarab (Fliers, holy scarab has 5% chance to auto-cast Fortune on allied unit[s] as if hero had cast it), weak/numerous, speed of 7/9
2 - Nomads/Desert Nomads (2-hexes, Sandwalking, Jousting), desert nomads ride camels
>Caravan/Oasis, stopping at oasis refreshes some movement for the day
3 - Mummy/Royal Mummy (curses whoever attacks it or whoever it attacks, vulnerable to fire, undead)
4 - Elephant/Oliphaunt (2-hexes, damages walls, oliphaunt immune to moats), have carpets on backs
5 - Sphinx/Ur-Sphinx (2-hexes, Fliers, can Roar to reduce enemy morale by 1 step up to 3 times, 2-hex eye laser attack), sphinx is female, ur-sphinx is male with short bull horns and sumerian beard
6 - Priest/High Priest (Shooter, can Bless ally unit, High Priest teleports and is Mass Shooter which hits main target for 100% and all other enemies for 50%, uses khopesh in melee), like bad guys from the stargate movie, priests have horus head in gold, high priests have anubis head in black, eyes glow blue, twisting gold cobra staves
7 - Scorpion Rider/Scorpion King (2-hexes, 20% Weakening Poison -2 Attack, hits 3-hexes, scorpion king attacks twice), scorpion rider has a khopesh, scorpion king is liek a centaur, pic related

Towards lower end stats-wise, but very heavy specials. I wanted to use gold/diamond golems, but eh. Only one archer.

Why does this campaign fuck with you so bad
>every map has some asinine tactical disadvantage for you to find out with trial and error
>3 unaccessible necropolis vs 2 mediocre castles
>artifact is on an island
>Orb of Inhibition is as cumbersome as it is useful against ressurrects
>PC actively trying to bait you and fuck with you in unforseen ways
>have to keep fleeing and doing cheesy rolls if enemies are gonna kill your stack of archers or not
>campaign deliberately exhausts you with undead enemies, making them more frustrating every mission

I was gonna have it take an extra round to move through, but I wasn't sure if another town did that already and I'm not sure how they'd show that in-game ("uh, did it skip my turn?")
>changing aesthetics
whatever floats your boat, I guess, but I didn't think changing a mount, a gender, a headpiece, or a lower body/head was such a big deal.
With the nomads, they are already present in the game, so I thought I'd leave them on their horses, but given that they live in the desert, why aren't they on camels already?
The sphinxes could both be male, but *the* sphinx is female I think
The head-piece on the priests is literally a minor costume change, no biggie there.
With the scorpion kind, I couldn't think of an appropriate lesser version, but then I thought to that part of the Clash of the Titans where those guys were riding a giant scorpion.

The animation is actually terribly synchronized and disgustingly slow (just try making matriarchs walk around). The "attention to detail" is just autism with tacky and tasteless results.
And the 3d makes the whole experience inferior to the previous games. In H1-4 you saw everything at once, efficiently, so you could play at peace. In H5 you have to rotate, zoom in and out all the time to be able to see shit. The creatures on the battlefield are also more difficult to identify. The town screens look fancy, but they are completely useless, nobody clicks on specific buildings there, you just use the simple menus in the corners. It's all supposed to look cool and awesome but it only obstructs gameplay.

If you had pure Might with no spells (which is often how bad HoMM3 discussions go on the web: "My Zydar will spam Slow / Blind / Implosion / Armageddon while your Jabarkas will be just standing here in the corner walking like molasses to me"), I'd say you would lose most of the time. Magic is really good and even Might heroes use it a lot to leverage their power; Master Gremlins ran by a Barbarian with Atk 10 is nice, Master Gremlins ran by a Barbarian with Atk 10 and Mass Slow is extremely strong and lets you take down all banks with no losses, which is a big deal for Tower.

On the other hand, I have no idea what an "only Magic" hero is. A single fast unit and a ton of spells? A regular army, but with precisely 0 Attack and Defense from hero?

I suppose I'd still go for only Magic vs only Might just because uncountered spell combos let you kite for days and spells are the thing that unlock most fights. About the only Pure Might thing I would be inclined to do would be Fortress / Wystan, hope for a lot of level 2 dwellings, get a ton of archers (underrated as of SoD 4.0) and rushing Hydras to get an early Dragon Utopia (huge Def means you can just stand in the middle and often take very minimal losses; all yo need is a hydra stack and 1+1+1...+1 dragon flies), but Pure Magic can also do that by the virtue of Expert Ressurrect being more likely.

Intelligence is one of the best skills on huge SP maps, some starting heroes (I believe El Trueno in Unleashing the Bloodthirsty) start with it because Intelligence lets you spam Town Portal and to have massive prolonged fights, you need the staying power and the ability to ressurect/clone over and over, or to maintain a Force Field for over 15 turns.

>It's not even about the 3D, it's about the attention to detail, the animations, the overall model design.
All of which wasn't very good though?
It is a 3D game made in 2005 and its age shows but just besides that, unit design is awful (genies with a wheel for a head? a town entirely of dwarves?), no thought it given to whether they'll blend with the ground textures (zombies on mud is my favorite), Monotype fucking Corsiva as the main font, hilariously bad hero portraits, creatures being impossible to distinguish on adventure map at max zoom... Man oh man I love Heroes V but it looks like flaming poo and shows its age.

I mentioned town screens earlier, the devs must've known that they're just useless graphics because they added all the interface elements to the HUD. Previously if you wanted to see your spells you'd click on the mage guild but in H5 you can't even tell what your Mage Guild is half the time. In some towns like Dungeon and Haven all buildings look the same or completely blend in the environment, in others like Sylvan or Academy they're blocked by the view and in Fortress you literally can't see anything because they're all on the walls of a huge gaping hole.

Disciples I-II style is cool to look at on screenshots but actually playing it is awful. Everything is dark and it can be difficult to make black and brown objects on black and brown background. Devs even knew this which is why in II there is a setting that adds flags to every active character and map object.

even that is fucking arguable because Warlock starts with Gargoyles and can buy them from town, and if he gets 1-2 more Warlocks from spending all gold on heroes then Gargoyles will fucking eat everything while being fast, plus you get the usual HoMM scaling on attack spells but with HoMM2's extremely low HP.

Metagaming-wise, Knight hero exists to get early Expert Leadership necessary for certain events and is decent for late game melee armies and Barbarian is the best main hero material for the archery-heavy Wizard armies (or most armies) because of his ridiculous Attack. Also you want Barbarians to speedrun certain maps like the one in Archibald Campaign where you go through desert to get a Dragon Utopia.

About the only way to play Knight is to try and get a second town and either double-build some shit like Rangers and try to swarm, or if the other town is something good like Warlock or Wizard then you just change to that. Knight faction is arse otherwise, but you can build it up as a secondary town and replace your tier 1/2 in late game with like Crusaders or something (they still fucking die in droves).

Sorceress has the best hit'n'run potential and can win games solely with Phoenix + Armageddon, aside that she's just alright.

HoMM2 is overall a game of Warlock vs Wizard. Necro can work but it's much harder to snowball because it doesn't have HoMM3's various Necromancy skill increasers (but it does have Knights and their retarded fucking Peasants).

>> No.4253457

Just played the Voyage Home HoMM2 expansion campaign and this time I decided to do the betrayal option. Holy fuck that was so much easier than the times I stayed loyal. You not only upgrade to Necro and Barbarian from Knight, but the way the map is setup you can expand so much more easily due to where the Barbarians are. I finished the last scenario in week 8 and my final score was 141 days.

So, last night I finished winning the mission substantively. I haven't gotten the sword, but I took all 5 of the towns in the main area and eliminated all enemy heroes I can see.

Playing on Expert. The date is Month 2, week 3, Day 6. For a while, there were no special tricks, just playing HoMM 3 and a bit of musical castles. The enemy had several strong heroes, but no real main army, and eventually I had Crag Hack pound them one by one. The combination of roads, easy access to stables, and those monoliths near the west side of the board make it easy to attack but hard to defend. If I had to do it over again, I would concentrate on the west side of the board, as that's where the monolith is. Honestly though, to win, all I really did was standard stronghold tricks; get a Behemoth crag on week one, go for castle, then go for the upgraded version. But I never had more than 6 AB's at any one time, but they were sufficient, with Crag Hack's skills and a bit of support. My "main army" is a bit anemic for this late stage, with

54 Royal Griffons
5 Cyclops Kings
7 Ogre Magi
24 Crusaders
4 Ancient Behemoths

But of course, if you break the enemy it doesn't matter how many losses you take.

I never saw an army that big, that early as you did. I'm not entirely sure how it mustered one up. The map has a shitton of gold mines, and recruitment restrictions on 4 of the 5 real towns, not to mention that Red apparently has a town tucked away somewhere where it can't make troops but can make gold. So manpower is your usual limiting factor, and that makes all those external dwellings very important. Constantly raid your opponents ones when you can, and hire out those archers and pikemen and griffons and whatever. It doesn't matter if they get hunted down and killed, your main point is to deny them to the enemy.

The first game is more just that you don't really know anything and there is a fuckton of grinding and no map. You will wipe a lot, but most of the time it's obvious why. The game takes open world to the extreme which makes it really not suitable for that many people. If you use a guide though you can finish it in a week or so, but it was designed to originally take a year or more to solve due to the lack of information. In the age of the Internet it's a very different experience.

The second one has a lot more puzzles but it has a basic automapper in game, and the major game clues are put on obvious signs. You just need to decode it. There's a ton more content in MM2 and it has a much better story that will lead into 3 and eventually end in 5.

We mainly say to skip the first two games because the graphics really show their age and the forgiveness of the rest of the series is a complete shift. For most players that aren't comfortable with old RPGs IoT and especially WoX are still pretty easy to get into. Jumping into the first two will frustrate almost anyone that isn't ready.

MM1 is tuned with exploration in mind.
They expect you to walk around cataloging everything you find while drawing your own maps because as you do chances are you're gonna have a good number of successful battles and therefore level. If you just open up a guide and go from important spot to important spot of course you'll end up having to grind something somewhere.

That said, MM1 is really dated and even Apple version interface can be tough to wrestle with at times.
If you don't have enjoyment with it, just move on to World of Xeen (4-5). I promise you won't really lose much.

And if you absolutely HAVE to play MM1 first, I recommend this automapping tool:

MM1 is quite easy past the first town if you know what to do.

There is a repeatable fetch quest that starts in the basement of the first town with huge rewards and you can finish it without fighting a single enemy outside of this basement. To get started you just need a few gems to pay the Leprauchan to warp to those towns and a small bit of money to get the levitation buff from the temple to not get killed by traps on the way to the teleporter in Dusk dungeon.

After doing this quest a few times you should have enough money for the best buyable equipment and a decent level making the rest of the game smooth sailing.

In 6 the dungeons are massively better although they could have used them better, like Agar's Lab and Dragon Rider Caves which have no quests. MM6 has a better standalone story with the traitor, although 7 mixes in a lot more directly with HoMM. Even the opening cinematic is great.

7 has a better skill system that actually makes promotions meaningful, but the reputation system is inferior. It also has a lot more classes, but GM was so poorly balanced in most cases that hybrids are incredibly weak. In MM6 everything but a Knight has uses. In MM7 Thieves, Druids, and Rangers are all basically worthless.

7 also ties in with MM3, but it's not stated directly. There's probably more story in MM7 just because of The Choice and having two games in there. Sure you miss out on the Council Quests and the like, but the scale of ending the silence or mass producing blasters and watching the world burn is far more interesting than the generic save the world in MM6.

Say I want to make a custom map; is there any way I could upload it so you guys could play it?

Regardless, any advice on a "perfect" map?

I'm making a x144 map with every terrain and an underground, plenty of water, every faction with four towns each (except conflux, which is one hidden grey town). One of my concerns is making it fair for every town type.

How do we fix water in HoMM? I guess you could get rid of it altogether, but I think the biggest problem is the penalty for getting on and off a ship without the Captain's Hat. Navigation could be a top tier skill in some situations, but most of the time it's just more effective to walk around a body of water or cast water walk.

>> No.4263445

>>4263358
yeah, the *only* problem is the unavoidable loss of a day getting on or off a ship. It should just be a movement penalty.

>> No.4263461

>>4263358
More shit to do on water. In vanilla HoMM 3 there's nothing to do at sea except fight wights and water elemental for shitty rewards. Even if you have Navigation and the map has a lot of water, there's no incentive to explore it, it's empty and boring and offers no rewards. Needs more sea-only resource stashes, creature banks and other objects.

>> No.4263502

>>4263461
flotsam, treasure chests, shipwreck survivors, mermaids, buoys, sirens, whirlpools, fighting other ships

if you have good navigation, that gives you an advantage over other heroes (who likely don't)

personally I like having a castle on an island or peninsula, because due to the loading/unloading penalty, I have at least some warning before an enemy hero pounces on my castle

also, on the map editor you can place monsters on open water. When you fight them, it's a ship-to-ship battle. Same for resources and artifacts.

On typical teplated random map, playing 130% or more:
Bron is a decent starting hero, and so is the gnoll specialist. Tazar can be a stellar main, but generally youd probably prefer a barb or a good warlock. Still beastmasters are not the worst.
Get vyvs asap, they are main power that fortress have and allow you to clean neutrals very easily. Later on flies are also super useful. Cows, as strong as they are, require a shitton of resources to upgrade so they are luxury.
Your main powerstack will be upgraded vyvs from fly hives and this is your biggest advantage over other factions. When the game goes long, youll fall off probably so get other cities and amass as much cows as possible.

>> No.4265024

>>4264151
>>4264918
This post is generally decent. Not sure how can
>a good warlock
be better at as a main than an unkillable Tazar, but alright.
Wystan is a good starting hero with the buffed reptilians in 4.0, and he is especially good if you encounter level 2 dwellings, so you can have a ton of archers that aren't the hardest hitters, but they're really sturdy, so they are greatly suited for doing shooter stacks or riskier fliers as well, plus you will get a lot of them. If you get a lot of lizards it's not even bad to upgrade them early, it can be situational. Broghild and Korbac can be good for their specialties as an early game force. Andra is a great secondary hero or even main hero on big single player maps due to Intelligence spec.
Beastmaster is a great hero class and especially Tazar because Fortress' great niche is that you have a really easy Dragon Utopia with just your Hydras and a few Dragon Flies to soak up the initial dragon attack, then you kill the most dangerous dragon stack and clean house from there.
Doing other creature banks with Fortress is also generally no problem, you have plenty of speed for kiting.

Also, Fortress really isn't a town for late game. Make the most out of your early game (single flies on secondary heroes are awesome scouts) and if you're playing a huge single player campaign, transition into Titans/Dragons/Archangels like everyone else while stockpiling Gorgons. A lot of people shit on Fortress because its full army isn't good against, say, a Tower full army hit point by hit point, but that's entirely not the point of this game.

Thanks for the help. So the wyverns upgrade is really worth it? My concern was it ups their cost considerably.

>> No.4265261

>>4265242
Wyverns upgrade is good because you get lots of them for free in fly hives, and upgrading them gives you the edge
Essential start units are dragonflies and wyvs. Lizardman are pretty decent too. Other units are generally more of a filler

Are you playing a (semi-)arcane spellcaster? Because I don't know how you're gonna beat Terminators without Implosion.

>> No.4267120

>>4267064
Archer, not having a simple Day of Protection spell is already really annoying. I don't have the space to drag around an Item of Heroism and an Item of Holy Bonus, but not having teleport would make this near unplayable.

While getting Thievery is somewhat tough, the major problem is that you can't get Lloyd's Beacon until you can clear out Wildabar, and Teleport takes clearing out one of the last two cities. You don't have merchant, you have no real healing, your items are trash, and most importantly you don't have access to the level fountain. Once you get Teleport the whole game should fall into place because you can almost always get a hold of the level, speed, and might fountains and the hp/sp restoration spots.

>>4267029
Well not solo, 2 player isn't that hard but not having mountaineering/pathfinding gets frustrating until you get enough spell points to teleport/Etherialize as needed. The cap of level 50 until you clear out the Dungeon of Lost Souls requires some creativity. You usually can just find an item of Implosions in MM3 to deal with the Terminators (with the Greywind thrones or Fizbin treasure). The choke point in WoX for a solo comp is killing Count Draco, but it's not as hard a cutoff as the level fountain is in IoT because you already have access to a +5 level fountain outside Vertigo.

>> No.4267134

>>4267120
Oh and would also require carrying around an item of Elements. There is so much more experience in MM3 that I don't think I'm going to need anything from the looks of it.

Also for anyone that decides to try this, don't keep around dead characters to carry stuff. Unlike the later games, monster experience is split even with dead players.

The only "cheat" you have to use in WoX is to bring someone around to drink the Negative Soul Waters in the Dungeon of Lost Souls, I don't think there are any in IoT. You will have to bring some dummy characters though for the moo chalices if you want all 31 power orbs, and if you don't use a male character you will have to drag some males for the Alicorn. Neither of these are essential quests though.

>> No.4267841

>>4267134
Ok yes, this is all of a sudden a ton easier with Teleport and disarm. With disarm now I have access to the gold to experience fountain from saving Fountain Head plus all the kings' treasure chests. With teleport there is now a workaround for mountaineering and pathfinding plus access to the level fountain. It just looks like a matter of grinding out the rest of the game at this point. I did realize there's another big quest that requires a dummy sacrifice, the Blackwind Dungeon. Similar to the others though it isn't essential since you can find the code in the pyramid near Baywatch even if you didn't know it already.

What's the most balanced tier in homm3? As in, which tier has the least gap between the best and the worst of that tier. Before conflux, I would have said tier 4 but the fire elemental's shittiness probably messed that up.

Golems are awesome, amazing health per gold (best in game) and solid damage for the tier (tied for top not counting grand elves). Their only killer is their speed, which isn't necessary for a blocker on a team with 3 ranged units.
