Nearly all hobbies are about how much money you can pump into a thing. You can get into things early as they're starting to become popular and be one of the cool people that make the hobby cool then dump it when too many douchebags get into it then invest the profits in a fresher hobby, which you might consider "investing". I think you're mainly confusing the word "hobby" with "art" or perhaps "sport". There really seems to be an increasing number of people on /vr/ who get very mad about their own poor vocabulary.

There's definitely something cooler about physically owning this medium in comparison to others. That being said, hoarding games with no intent to play them is strange. I feel I have a pretty decent collection given we grew up pretty poor, lot of which has sentimental value. I've been wanting to play retro without emulation again, but I'm still in search of a worthy crt.

Depends how long. I gave away all my childhood stuff long ago but if I'd kept it it would be worth much less than I paid for it. When the retro craze first started ten or so years ago I realized I could take advantage of it and have some fun along the way. I bought up loads of shit for dirt cheap. Spent several grand. Most stuff is now going for 10-20 times what I paid and rare shit many times that. If you got in at the right time it's been a damn good investment.

But I've been learning to love the digital age. I can have all of my shit in the space of a deck of cards, and a lot of it on a tiny-ass sd card. A PC for games, blu-ray player for videos, and a tablet for books.

I used to want to collect, but then I realized it's illogical, inefficient, and materialistic. I realized it was buying plastic cases and cardboard boxes in attempts to fill a void and bring me a sense of accomplishment. I like to think of it like trying to fill a hole by throwing cartridges and game cases down it, but they just disappear once thrown in, and the hole is never filled.

Now I focus on things that actually serve a function or would aid in the actual gaming experience. Instead of having all my old consoles hooked up for retro gaming, I now only have my Wii and PS2 hooked up, since Wii can emulate everything up to 4th gen as well as play GameCube games, and PS2 can play PS1 and 2 games. The differences in emulation through RetroArch and playing on the real console are indistinguishable in actual gameplay (especially since RetroArch Wii supports 224p modes), and adapters can be purchased to use the real controllers with your Wii, making it a much more convenient experience. I load Wii, GameCube, and PS2 games off of HDDs attached to the consoles, and all my games are packed away in a closet. There are no games taking up any space in my retro gaming setup, only a disc binder full of burned PS1 games, as those can't be loaded off a HDD without using a PS1 emulator on PS2, and I like to play with the backwards compatibility.

I do want to back up all my Steam games to discs and put them in DVD cases, which flies counter to all my reasoning for not having any console games lying around, but there is a practical purpose for it (having disc backups in case of hard drive failures), though a simple disc binder would accomplish the same feat. I also want to print the manuals for them though, and having them all in a case with the game may justify that.

I am slowly trying to train myself to be less materialistic, and see game collecting as largely a greedy, materialist endeavor.

Agree totally. Its shitty because you do it for so long you transition from being a gamer to being a collector due to time. I had my SNES/N64 since 98 and my library just grew over time, back when even getting Roms in the early 2000s was very difficult.

Not to mention the hardware was being sold/given away with no worries because they wanted to get a little extra money so they can buy the next big console(or it got tossed). Now they are regretting it.

I agree with some other anons have already said. I'll buy games that I like or want to play ,but I don't go out of my way to buy up as many games as I can for the sake of having a collection.

The "full nes/snes set" seems to be the biggest meme out there, guys are only doing it just so they can brag about owning a bunch of old games that they will likely never play, or even have any true passion or enjoyment for. Look at youtubers who are buying like 50 games a week in their pick up videos, you really think they ever have any time to play those games, plus working on their channel, working another job or 2 outside yt, and on top of all that trying to keep up with modern gaming too? I highly doubt it.

As for investing it's a bit hard to say. I think prices will plateau if more people lose interest or get out of it. In my area(GTA) at least it seems like there is more people looking to buy these games to sell, and less people looking to actually play the games or just own them. It's hard to say. I have almost everything I want at this point so I'm not actively looking for anything but I'm happy with what I have now.

Just keep/buy the games you want to play, don't fall for the stupid "gotta have em all" collecting meme.

Sometimes it is just confusing. I remember a thread here on /vr/ about someone buying a copy of Kibry 64, and people were pretending it was actually a real good game and not the very definition of uninspired mediocrity that plagued a lot of n64 games. I sometimes feel that people will praise some of these retro games just so chumps will end up thinking they are actually worth the price.

I mainly collect PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games so I've never thought I would get a full collection, but I still look for lesser known games to try to see if they're actually fun to play. It's like spinning a roulette wheel, sometimes I get shit, sometimes it's fun. Usually it's cheap. I still grab all my favorite games or look for games that are well known as good, but some of my favorite games I've never heard others talk about. That's what I find fun about collecting.

They say that, for clothes, you should probably sell it or donate it to charity if you don't use it at least once a year or season. I do that with games I add to my shelf: if I made it a full year without playing it, I should consider selling it, because obviously I didn't have any serious interest.

Beyond that, try-before-you-buy if it's at all possible, watch some longplay footage, just put it some level of effort to make sure I'm not buying a shelf piece and I don't know it yet.

Absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to own your favorite games on physical, especially if you love them and will actually play them. The biggest problem are the full set pokemon mentality collectors. They can fuck right off.

I just kept what I had gotten for all my years. It wasn't with the intention of collecting, but they were legitimately games I wanted to play (or felt worth the clearance price). There's no point for me to sell the games back since the return would be way less than the amount I value and enjoy playing the games. I don't have much nor earn much money, so I'm just used to keeping what I have. I play with the real hardware, clone hardware, and emulation and each serves a function to me.

I think the meaningfulness of games can be unique to each person. I have memories associated with a lot of games. If people collect and have a lot for their own reasons, good for them, I'm not going to tell them how to spend their money and efforts.

I don't see the games I have as an investment, aside from "glad I decided to get N64 Conker's for $5 because I'd not want to pay the asking price for it now" since they are mine they are just $0. I understand the discs may rot or the cartridges may fail in the future, but as mentioned they were what I had. One can easily download or buy digitally most if not all the games and be free of clutter and the cost of securing/maintaining said clutter. Great for them, that is just not for me as I like to stay flexible to play via original means as I remembered, through flash carts and FPGAs, or emulation however the mood hits me. The only thing I am sure of in my future is death, and the non-permanence of the physical games I do have; I will not be distraught if everything was sold off or destroyed when I am gone but I will enjoy the games I like for as long as I can.

Just collect the games you want for the systems you own, and make sure to play every game you own. Just make sure you have fun.

I think for a lot of people it also depends on location. Being from a smaller town/area, I had a pretty good garage sale/antique location of stuff to get so I didn't have to go far. I found a ton of SNES and Dreamcast games that I wanted from this and even found some other stuff too like an Atari 5200 and a sega CD with Snatcher. But being in such a gracious area for these things didn't make me go out of my way to fill up my collection with whatever junk games I could find, I just picked through the stuff I wanted. Quality > Quantity

-you have the rest of your life in order and have expendable income
-you can afford to sit on your collection for long enough for it to gain value
-you have the means to actually sell it when you want to cash out

i do it because the process of building a collection is fun to me. i like being alone with my thoughts in the car or checking out a new store with some friends. i like finding games i always wanted as a kid but couldn't afford to play or even rent. other people i know that are my age blow all their money on going to bars and doing coke. this hobby is cheaper and more satisfying to me.
