It surprised me that this game was hated, me and my friends like it for the aesthetics and gameplay (we never played Island first, so I guess that's why).
Main flaw with this game is the lack of reward for high scores. Doing a 30-Melon run is actually difficult in some levels (like that level with the fucking fish or mech castle) and the game doesn't reward you for getting high scores.
At least Star Fox 64 gave you on-foot multiplayer and expert for getting lots of points.

I don't remember about the final boss, but what's kind of weird is that the game does have finite continues, once your last Yoshi is taken to the castle, it's game over and there's no continue.
But the game is pretty easy, so it's unlikely you'll get to that point.
As already said, the real challenge lies in the melon-only runs.

>> No.4258075

I'm always so confused at these posts saying the game was too easy. I played it as a kid, when I was around 6. I beat Mario 64 and Oot (with my older sis) but we always had trouble with Yoshi. The game scared me with these Skeleton dragons, the huge fish and when losing a Yoshi. Also you had to play the Story Mode several times collecting hearts to get all levels.
I love it a lot, though. The Yoshi gibberish in the Song that plays After you beat a Level sounded like the Yoshis singing my name. Good times!

>Also you had to play the Story Mode several times collecting hearts to get all levels.
Most people only play through the story mode once, so they only play 1/4 of the total levels in the game.
Yoshi's Story is a weird game. The difficulty is kind of all over the place. Some segments are just a literal walk in the park, while others have dangerous insta-kill hazards like the thorns in the piranha plant level and what not.

I agree OP, Yoshi's Story is one of my favorite 2D platformers and I honestly enjoy it much more than Yoshi's Island. It gets shit on because, A) people don't know how to play it, and B) due to the childish atmosphere it has. Personally, the cheery graphics and sound are one of the best parts of the game for me; I've never understood why people aren't able to appreciate this kind of aesthetic in the same way you can appreciate a gory shooter. It's almost as if being exposed to anything that isn't overtly "mature" somehow makes them feel insecure. It's actually pretty ironic that Yoshi's Island fans hate on this game for being too cute, given that Yoshi's Island is literally a babysitting simulator.

Moreover, people wanted this game to play more like a traditional platformer and it wasn't. It isn't a game like Mario or Sonic where you just hop from A to Z. The levels in Yoshi's Story are circular in nature, and designed to be replayed over and over, not only to achieve a progressively higher score, but also to visit areas that you hadn't visited in previous playthroughs. There are many, many paths through each level and each path will take you to wildly different areas, often times with unique obstacles and enemies that you won't find anywhere else. To this day, I'll ocassionaly stumble upon a well-hidden area that I hadn't before. There is plenty of content in this game for those that bother seeking it out, it's just that most people want instant gratification and don't find the arcade-like, score-driven gameplay of the game to be fun.

If all you want is a traditional platformer, then suit yourself. Personally, Yoshi's Story is so much more enjoyable to me because it encourages exploration. It's also one of the most relaxing games ever made. While it isn't particularly challenging, I don't always want a challenge. Sometimes it's nice to just kick back with a beer and have fun popping shy guys with flying ducks.

Eating 30 melons is worth 3 times more points than any other fruit thanks to the bonus at the end of a level. You can't beat a level by eating lucky fruit as there are only 20 of each in a level and there's no bonus multiplier for them at the tally at the end. Right off the bat the fruit system is pointless.
You can "cheat" the death system and avoid losing the black and white yoshi by hitting reset right at the time when you die, you'll go back to title screen and be able to restart the level while still keeping your yoshis.
Also you can skip the annoying celebratory singing by hitting reset, this should take you to the title screen and allow you to continue from the next stage.

This is how scoring in Yoshi Story boils down to, just milk that same fairy enemy for 1 hour and 30 minutes until counter stop. Not much fun.

You're looking at it the wrong way. Having melons be the obvious choice for maximizing score is the best way to do it, it makes it simple. The designers probably didn't want people to have to sit around thinking about "what gives me the better score, 30 melons or 20 lucky fruit, etc". It's just easier to know "okay, I'm going to look for all the melons". The other fruit just acts as a way to either A) complete the level fast or B) regain health. A lucky fruit will provide more health than a non-lucky fruit so if you have to make a decision between which to eat, it helps to know which one is better and the additional score is just a bonus.
>You can "cheat" the death system and avoid losing the black and white yoshi by hitting reset right at the time when you die, you'll go back to title screen and be able to restart the level while still keeping your yoshis.
Who cares? You can pull these kind of greasy tricks in almost any game. If you want to play legit, nobody is forcing you to power off.
>Also you can skip the annoying celebratory singing by hitting reset, this should take you to the title screen and allow you to continue from the next stage.
Why do people get so triggered by this? The music is fun and cute. You're playing a game about a fucking baby dinosaur dude, if you don't want sickening sweetness and childlike atmosphere play something else.

I don't like the scoring system, period. Black and White Yoshi get the most points just from being used in a level, get the most points from shy guys and coins, you have to sniff every inch of the level for hidden melons, thank god youtube has guides for that so it's no really necessary anymore, and there's a glitch that allows enemies to be milked indefinitely if you teleport using one of the checkpoint guys at the exact moment you kill an enemy with an egg.
Scoring wasn't very well thought out at all.

I like this game. I love the artstyle. I think it is cool that the world is in a pop-up book, it makes it more fairytale-ish than Wooly World or Yoshi's Island.

TECHNICALLY, you should be able to eat 30 lucky fruit by abusing this screen in P3-1 which in theory should be worth more than the melon bonuses.

It's actually possible - and the ending sequence background image changes accordingly too! You won't be able to accomplish this on just any course, though, so let's break it down: Basically, every course has 60 fruit, of which 30 pieces are melons and 30 pieces are regular. However, only 12 of the regular pieces will be Lucky Fruit, so how do we make that 30? Well, this depends on two factors: availability of Heart Fruit, and enemies that can be turned into Lucky Fruit. When Yoshi gets Super Happy after eating a Heart Fruit, most Shy Guys (and some enemy swarms) can be turned into additional Lucky Fruit by performing a ground pound! But in order to get 30 pieces in total, there will have to be at least 18 enemies on the course that can be turned into Lucky Fruit. With a bit of strategy, this goal can be accomplished on the following courses: ▪ Treasure Hunt ▪ Surprise‼ ▪ Rail Lift ▪ Cloud Cruising ▪ Poochy & Nippy ▪ Jungle Hut ▪ Shy Guy Limbo ▪ Ghost Castle The goal can also be accomplished with any other kind of lucky fruit.* But different fruit may require a different strategy than the one displayed here, depending on their locations. As a rule of thumb, if there are any Shy Guys within a certain area, you'll most likely want to trigger a Heart Fruit nearby. Heart Fruits are triggered by eating 6 pieces of the same fruit in a row, which means the 6th, 12th, 18th and 24th Lucky Fruit will trigger a Heart Fruit. But plan your triggers carefully! If a significant area has only one Lucky Fruit, but is not set to be your next trigger, continue through the course and head back again when the numbers add up. *Jungle Hut will only be possible to complete with apples.

Yeah, you're kind of missing the point. The game is designed such that if you want to go for high score, you just look for melons. Conversely, if you're a small retarded child that doesn't care about score, you eat fruit, and different fruits help you to varying degrees. What's so hard to understand about this?
