Did you own a trinitron when you were younger? If not then it doesn't matter what it looked like in the 90s. I've done it, it's basically the same as playing retro on a flat screen. Doesn't look awful but it's not exactly right, and the display lag can make some games harder. Ideally you want to use HD CRTs with stuff like the GCN/Wii, Xboxs, and PS3/4 that can output HD resolutions. I ordered a degaussing ring but it will take 1month to arrive from China.
I want to try to fix this sooner by using the built-in degaussing coil.

Do CRTs degauss when you turn them off or when you turn them on?
How many times should I turn it off and on to make the internal degauss do all it can?

Hey guys,

I have a question about the 240p suite.

So I'm using a SNES it on a Trinitron to show a 256x224 resolution.

The grid isn't perfect and I haven't had any luck adjusting the horizontal cut off (none of the settings in the service menu seem to do it.) but it's decent.

What I want to know is, even if the grid looks reasonable, how do I know if the image is being squashed in any way? I look at images of the sprites on google like pic related, and something just seems off compared to what I have on my screen.

Yoshi looks a little wider, but I'm not sure if this is just what 4:3 does to the sprites.

Hopefully that makes sense.

/crt/, I feel like I'm ever so close to getting my Trini's geometry in better order. last thread someone said reducing the TV's "picture" setting would remove some of the bowing distortion. I booted up 240pTS and sure enough it does the closer you get to 0. The issue is that the screen is super dark afterwards. Would raising brightness remedy this? Did you set the brightness using the PLUGE test pattern (you should use the RGB Full Range pattern and the 1 IRE bar should be just barely visible against the background). Black level is subtly affected by the Picture control, but it shouldn't take more than a click or two to correct it. If the TV behaves anything like other Trinitrons I've worked with, your light output should be basically correct with the Picture control set anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 of its maximum--these tubes can get truly excessively bright, which will introduce all kinds of distortion.

You might also try disabling Scan Velocity Modulation if your TV has it, since that causes nothing but problems. But sadly, some of the issues are simply due to geometry being a lot wonkier on flat tubes.

WEGAs are superior to Hi-blacks (so called because they're black and sit atop their speakers) in most ways.

Less screen glare (light reflection)
Better stereo separation (speakers on the sides)
More inputs (3-4 instead of 1-2)
Component inputs (instead of just S-video)
Inputs on the front panel (and headphone jack too)
Easier to find (being 5+ years newer)
Greater selection (since there are more of them on Craigslist you can pick the best model instead of settling for the single Hi-black available)
More options in the service menu (secret menu for advanced tweaking)

The only advantages of Hi-black are:
Better linearity, focus, convergence (will still need calibration to be perfect)
Easier to lift (lighter and narrower to get your arms around)

My SCART switch has an audio output.

You still have only one SCART and maybe 3 composite and 2 S-Video inputs, made entirely irrelevant because you would only use RGB SCART or have a SCART switch (even for composite/S-Video consoles hooked onto it).

Not an argument, they are still severely shittier.
The black consumer Trinitrons are plentiful and usually go for 5€ here, there's 2 for that sum on sale on my local sales site already. The main one I use right now I got for free.

>Greater selection (since there are more of them on Craigslist you can pick the best model instead of settling for the single Hi-black available)
It's still shit. Go to the park, there's a great selection of dogshit also. And see above argument.

>More options in the service menu (secret menu for advanced tweaking)
More? Like what? The service menu for those Trinitrons already contains everything.

>Better linearity, focus, convergence (will still need calibration to be perfect)
Pretty huge advantage, as it's _literally_ a device you use for viewing.

Not really. The luma and chroma signals are separate. The absence of a chroma signal doesn't increase the resolution of the luma signal any more than turning down the color control on your TV set does; that is, it will be easier to see the detail of the luma signal without the lower resolution chroma signal overlaid on it, but the level of detail hasn't changed.

So some time ago I suggested using an sdi capture card to output emulator image to a CRT, eliminating game hardware and still getting high quality image. Some anon told me the output isn't rgb so it will look like poo. Well that's not true. Most capture cards support rgb with various combinations of sync signaling, 8bit and 10bit. They are mostly meant for character generator processing so output rgb is sort of a requirement.
So I think getting a used sd capture card for cheap and then building up an application utilizing the hardware could prove sucessful.

Can someone please explain why my nes displays all in green? I can see the game and play it but it's all in different shades of green. I'm new to this whole crt stuff, I just got some kind of video monitor for cheap and all my other consoles look flawless. Nes is connected through scart that goes through a bnc adapter. No, the red bit should absolutely be visible. It's just that most developers of the era won't include any game-critical information in the red area, as the inconsistent nature of overscan on CRTs meant there was a chance that it would be cut off. Your grid looks basically exactly as it should.

This is a good CRT.
Large but not too heavy for one man to move around.
A nice curved screen for better linearity/focus/convergence
Two inputs, one of which has S-video
Not just audio outputs for connecting to an amp and speakers but also video out for recording to a VCR or having two displays showing the same game (demonstrate to your friends how LCDs ruin the picture of old consoles).

Did you get the original remote for it?

>> No.4250896

You should not need to go into the service menu to turn off VM. It is found in the regular menu.

Velocity modulation is a post processing, lag inducing, artificial sharpening that adds harsh edges to objects and ultimately decreases the level of detail in the image despite increasing the contrast between objects. Only normies leave VM on.

If you cannot adjust it in the menu you are probably on the wrong video mode like AV instead of RF or RF instead of AV.

My question is then: Can VHS and LD hold more content (longer movies/multiple movies, more special features) with B&W content than with colour?

What about VCD and DVD? Can they hold more content (longer movies/multiple movies, more special features) with B&W content than with colour?
