I'm just getting into DOSBox (I'd used it before, but not heavily).

What are some DOS games worth downloading/playing? I already know the 90s FPSes.

Dragon Wars is a superb first person dungeon crawling RPG. Your exploration generally only gated by whether you can handle the enemies on your way. It has nice attrition-based combat, and there are tons of different ways to approach most situations.

Ragnarok is a cool Nethack-style roguelike that I find much easier to approach and more fun to explore than Nethack.

Technically yes, tons. Look up PC-98 games. However, though they run MS-DOS, PC-98s are not IBM-compatible, so the games won't run on Western PCs or DOSBox. You'll need an emulator like Neko Project II (get the fmgen version). IBM-compatibles didn't really take off in Japan until Windows 95 came out.

Personal blue-board-safe favorites that don't require Japanese knowledge are Flame Zapper Kotsujin, Touhou 4 and 5, Rusty, and Totsugeki Mix.

There's also lots of porn. Lots and lots of porn. Most of Elf's old games are good to great, C's Ware made some good stuff as well. These kinds of games tend to be very text-heavy, so be warned if you don't know Japanese.

Windows takes over operation of the entire system once started and is the OS. Even win3 has to emulate DOS if you open a shell inside of it since the DOS you booted with is no longer in control. Hell you can't even exit back to DOS from Win95 onwards without a full reboot. MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, Ghost Bear's Legacy, and Mercenaries
Master of Orion 2
Duke Nukem 1, 2, 3D
Shadow Warrior
Terminal Velocity
Strike Commander
Ascendancy

I'm trying not to do duplicates (though I know MoO 2 is in that pic that gets posted and someone already mentioned MechWarrior 2 and Mercenaries).

There's so many good DOS games. You could probably play DOS shit forever if you had the urge to.

Did MoO 2 have a DOS version? I know the original did, but I thought 2 came out in the Win9x era?

That said, Terminal Velocity is a pretty awesome first person shmup and I totally had forgotten about it.

Also:
Battle Chess
Epic Pinball
Albion
Alone in the Dark
Simon the Sorceror
Silent Service 2
Realms of Arkania
Lode Runner
Cyberdogs

If there's games you want to try out, check out classicreload.com they may not emulate the way you want, but it'll at least give you an idea of how the game plays, if you want to down load them and then tweak 'em in D-Fend or whatever.

How do you guys launch your games?

Personally, I have a folder for my entire setup. Within that folder are config and dosbox folders, and a DOSBox batch file. For each game, I make a .conf file in the config folder with any special settings and an autoexec section. The autoexec section mounts any drives, (which I keep in cdrom, disk, and fixed folders at the top level), and then runs any commands from the game's batch file.

I run the DOSBox batch file, which does the following:

1) Adds the dosbox folder to the path
2) Switches to the config folder
3) Uses doskey to add a "play" macro
4) Runs %ComSpec% /k to show a prompt

Then I just use the play macro to start a game. For example, "play megarace.conf". The play macro runs DOSBox with the -userconf and -conf switches, passing the name of the config file I typed. Since the prompt is already in the config directory, tab completion works too. The -userconf switch allows some settings to be set globally if desired (it's not portable though, unfortunately).

>Windows 9x *is* DOS. Windows is just the GUI.
Putting the asterisk there already says that you are trying to stretch the boundaries.

DOS is a part of the Kernel. Windows 9x uses DOS as base to work. Because of the structure, how the OS is build, it is one piece of OS and not like two separate parts like some people think it is.
Yes, you can boot into a pure DOS mode, without running the gui. But it's still counts as part of Windows 9x at this point.
It even says it at the prompt if you type "ver".

Saying Win9x is DOS is like saying Win 3.1 is DOS. It isn't. It's Windows. Yes Win 3.1 is really a GUI for DOS. Win9x isn't that anymore. It doesn't come in two separate pieces. And no, copying the DOS part of Win 95 via fomat c: /s isn't installing DOS 7.1. It's just making a drive bootable after the format.

Also saying shit like Program XY runs on DOS, when it actually needs Win3.1 or 95 is the worst bullshit I have ever heard.

And yes jemmex is not very compatible, thats why i keep emm386 around.

Here's Qemm97, that should work with 6.22 I think.
solidfiles com/v/mdXkjY7n8DWre

I suggest you use Qemm as a stepladder towards creating your own memory configuration though, since Qemm is not perfect.
I remember that after I installed Qemm suddenly I was having a lot of problems with certain games, where they'd refuse to boot or crash or lock up or just plain reboot the computer.

Eventually I decided I wanted a Qemm free pc, so I made backups of the config.sys and autoexec.bat and just started tinkering with it myself, loading order and high and load that stuff.

Couldn't have done it without the prior Qemm experience though, so it did have its purpose.
but ultimately if you have a dedicated DOS pc you should look into running Qemm free.
