So, I love Tempest, but I've only ever played with a D-pad. I'm looking for an easy and inexpensive way to get rotary controls on my PC. The Ultimarc Spintrak is expensive, and the mouse mod is a lot of work.

Is there a controller out there with a decent spinner on it? Has anyone tried to use one of those multimedia jogwheels as a game controller?

There's a couple console controllers that have spinners on them, pic related was made for racing games and arkanoid for example, but I don't think something like this has ever been requested specifically for aracde games that used them.
When I emulate Tempest I just map my mouse wheel for it

I went down this road years ago and in the end nothing was as satisfying as an actual spinner so I ended up getting a turbotwist.
It helped that Tempest is one of my most favorite games ever, so it gets a lot of use.

You can hack an old school mouse that has a ball into a homemade spinner. It's not really that difficult if you have a little imagination and any common sense at all.

Just use a bigass trackball you'll never get the same effect as a flywheel heavy arcade spinner. My googling indicates there are standalone USB spinners that appear legit at a glance though.
