I had one of those for a few days and I was deeply disappointed. The buttons feel almost mushy and not as responsive as a Saturn or even my DS4 and the dpad is below average. I also hate the placement of the main face buttons, they should be moved to the right in place of L1 & R1.

I wish someone, somewhere would just get the rights from Sega to mass produce the PS2 edition of the Saturn pad but with maybe a third interface button in the middle for extra functions on modern consoles & PC.

Shit NES games for 5 bucks are still not worth 5 bucks. I can buy shit games complete in the box for only 10 bucks instead of just a loose cart of baseball for 5.

The same fucking games that were in a flee market 10 years ago going for nothing suddenly are rare and expensive and it is impossible for people to get into collecting because of it.

The only thing it is really possible to collect is micro computer games but who knows how long they will remain cheap.

I bought the game rouge squadron with its box for only 15 bucks so not all retro stores have bad prices however shit can be really expensive.

The only market i see fit to collect for is the PS1 and the PS2 (i know it ain't retro). Aside from that gaming is too pricy and id rather just emulate most games then buy them (i have the systems i just do not want to pay up the ass to buy the better games for them).

Bullshit, there are plenty of consoles from the 70s that still work like a charm and keeping them clean and away from the elements will extend their life considerably. A console from the 90s, especially one that is cartridge-based, will outlast you. The only real concerns are replacing batteries, resistors, capacitors, etc. but these are all minor issues that can be remedied easily.

It depends on the game. For the majority of games/systems that Saturn pad is best for me. Super Nintendo, Genesis, most MAME games, NES, NeoGeo Pocket, Gameboy (Color & Advance), PC-Engine, Master System, Game Gear, Wonderswan, etc. all suitably work great. I primarily use the YZBC buttons for diamond shaped face buttons.

Some N64 games that use the d-pad like WrestleMania 2000 or No Mercy I just map YZBC to the C directions, and the analog stick (for taunts) I can use the keyboard.

However it gets tricky for games and systems that require analog inputs (or dual joysticks like Smash TV). That's what I have more modern controllers for.

I love using the Saturn pad, but there are some minor things that keep it from perfection. I wish the XYZ buttons were the same size as the ABC buttons and the D-pad rests inside a recess that I wish was bigger. As I use my crappiest one currently (the sunbaked one on the lower right) and with my thumb callus built up and hardened from all the games I play, I start to shave off a bit of plastic just to the down-right of the D-pad (visible on my overused sunbaked pad). Also, the PS2 versions of it does add a nice extra button with the select button so it works well as a screenshot button for emulation.

The problem with them are that they lack an analog stick for Dreamcast games. They are more like the Dreamcast arcade sticks which ditches the analog and changes the L&R to Z&C buttons. The D-pad is a little more loose and light in theory for fighting games but I kind of prefer the slight tilt a real Sega Saturn controller's D-pad performs slightly more. I will say the lighter and looser D-pad of the Ascii Pad FT is better suited for parries/blocks in the Street Fighter 3 games than the Saturn pads.

They do have the equal sized ABC & XYZ buttons that I crave. However, they do lack shoulder buttons.

You have fairly unique and odd tastes in what would be your ideal controller.

Similar to how I want a Seimitsu LS32 stick paired with Sanwa buttons in a Sega Astro City layout (not the Viewlux everyone uses now) with a wider spacing between stick and buttons like more modern Hori sticks. The closest I got is pic related, but the stick is too close to the buttons (also I couldn't afford a Seimitsu stick, so I kept the Sanwa stick). Just like you, one minor flaw keeps it from perfection.

I also use a PS2 to GameCube adapter, so I can connect the PS2 Sega Saturn pad into the GameCube, but it also works with your choice of PS1/PS2 controller (also why I have a few PSone Dual Shock as the converter does not like the PS2's analog face buttons).

Nothing wrong with using 360 controllers on PC as that is what a lot of modern developers use themselves for input on modern Windows systems. The stock 360 controller is really comfortable and just its D-pad is the weakness to me. If you don't mind wired, the Hori EX2 Turbo pads has everything: 6 face buttons (duplicate LB+RB), a better d-pad, 2 analog sticks (for twinstick or analog purposes), 2 analog triggers (for racing games), 10ft cable, all in a very ergonomic shape. I would even say the Hori EX2 Turbo pads may be the most ideal for general emulation.

These pictures were taken for an older /vr/ thread that was titled "controller fetish" and I guess I have that because I do thoroughly clean them, and the sensation of a clean controller is comforting. I used to host a few Bomberman parties, so that's why I have so many Saturn and SNES controllers. It didn't help when I was playing GGPO intensely and finally broke a Saturn pad, and the cheap knockoff Saturn pads didn't feel right to me, so my paranoia just made me get more in case for the future.
