How do you shop for retro games?

Unfortunately, I only have one used game store in my area that sells retro titles, and their selection is overpriced and limited. As a result, I'm mostly having to resort to online shopping to make my purchases. I've tried using apps like LetGo, but most of the items posted are either in poor condition or are massively overpriced.

Although I use Amazon quite frequently for other types of purchases, I don't really like using it for buying games because the listings rarely have detailed photos of the item being sold and I'm afraid that I'm going to buy something that will show up in poor condition. So far, I feel like I've had the most success with eBay. It usually takes some time to find a decent listing from a reputable seller at a decent price, but I can usually find what I'm looking for if I give it some time and check back regularly. I also like that a lot of sellers post multiple, high-quality pictures of the items being sold. So what do you guys use? Any other eBay users here, or am I a sucker for using them? Are there any reputable online shops dedicated to selling retro titles in good condition?

I usually just scour ebay for decent deals. All the places where I live go by prices there anyway and hardly anyone sells Genesis games that aren't Golden Axe or Madden 94. Either that or I'll use Japanese auction sites, ended up getting copies of Salamander and DodonPachi for Saturn at like half the rate they go for on ebay.

Glad to hear that eBay is decent enough that other people here use or have used it. It has been pretty good to me so far as well.

Honestly, as shitty as the scalpers are on eBay, keep checking Newly Listed at random times of the day and night. Sometimes you'll get a phenomenal deal, if you're lucky. I got a CIB excellent condition Bomberman 64 for 25 plus shipping. Now I'm trying to get a good deal on R-Type Tactics and Contra: Shattered Soldier, but the bids keep going up past fifteen dollars.

Yard sales, flea markets, some used game stores that are a few cities over since I live in the middle of nowhere, and occasionally imports from eBay.

I'm not a collector; I buy these games for actual and eventual use. Emulation and (affordable) Flash carts aren't entirely out of the question since I'm not all that concerned with having physical copies of these games. So in some cases, I mod my hardware to emulate other hardware.

Most of my library is imports. This is for three reasons: English releases are often heavily censored, English releases have shoddy manufacturing quality that cuts too many corners, and imports are just more fairly priced overall.

Bonus rant: I fail to understand what "collector's" value could possibly exist in games that have hackjob translations with missing and censored content, are manufactured in Mexico or China, have maybe a two-page fold-out in place of a proper manual, and come in generic paper-thin jewel disc cases that crack when you so much as breathe on them hard enough. i.e. Almost every retro Japanese game translated and released in the States.

With all these it varies. You have to find the good stores. Some thrift stores take all their gaming stuff and put it behind a counter and slap ebay prices on it. At others i find consoles, games, and controllers just laying around the store with $1.99 tag on it.

A lot of flea markets are high but ive been able to find a booth here or there that is reasonable.

The trick to finding the cheap stuff is going and browsing the store pretty frequently. I go about twice a week and things i pass on will be gone within two days. The overpriced shit behind counters will sit a while.

Just in the past week or so I have picked up:

> DMG w/ Tetris for $1.99
> Genesis M2 $3.99
> GBA SP 101 in a bag with 5 games $9.99
> Several PC games @ $1 a piece
> PSX controller $1
> PS2 controller $1
> Ms PacMan PnP $1.39
> 2 wiimotes and 2 nunchucks $3.99
> 2 USB Gamepads $2.99

Scotfag here: usually eBay, until very recently there were practically no retro or independent game shops around my area. Charity shops or cash converters (pawn shops) very infrequently have anything worth a shit, usually it's a handful of copies of FIFA '98 or ISS Pro if anything. CeX are into the retro thing now, but they go by eBay average and don't attempt to beat it.

On the plus side though, recently a dude running an arcade cafe not too far from me started selling some Jap games and guides/artbooks for considerably under the eBay average. Will need to keep an eye on what he's got.

If you "lost" with a sniping service using your max bid, then you didn't really lose. You only lose when you pay more than you wanted. There will always be some chump that overpays, and if you're feeling spiteful, you can make more of them by putting in "chump bids"; but be careful and don't overpay. Also, this can actually raise prices as well.

Not so much collector's value but the personal emotional nostalgia attributed to them. At least for me, anyway. For instance FFVI and Suikoden 1&2 are some of my favorite games, but it is well known what their issues are. However if you start collecting too much the hoarding becomes like a disease - it's awful, from my experience. Really old games can be emulated but I have had trouble with some of the more modern stuff.

Honestly, if I could read japanese I would play the imports instead in a heartbeat. Just to experience something new with something old again.

Let's say you find 3 games for SNES you really want to play but the cost amounts to $50 or something of the same value in whatever currency you use. Why do that when you can emulate or get a flashcart that will prevent you from spending similar or greater amounts ever again? To give you an example or point of reference, years ago I almost bought a copy of Image Fight and Metal Storm for the NES and quickly came to my senses. Fuck that. Yard sales are where its at.

Wednesday/Thursday, find garage/estate sales on your local craigslist for the weekend. If they have a number, call them. Tell them what you're looking for. If you think you have a bite, tell them to hold it aside for you, and you'll pick it up on the day of the sale.

If you can't call, make a note of it anyway. Begin charting a course, and determine your fastest route to hit all the locations (and hit up any you find in between). Before you begin, though, make sure you withdraw $60 maximum from the ATM, and get a high caffeine drink, as you'll need to leave at least at 7 AM. If you can't score big on $60, you're not scoring at all. Unless you find something incredible, and you're tapped out for cash, do not overwithdraw.

Always ASK. That should be the first thing you do. Bring an example. "Do you have any of these kinds of games around?" You'd be surprised how many people will scoot into their homes and pull out a box from their basement. If they do NOT have any retro games, politely excuse yourself. If they have a friend or family member that might be able to hook you up, feel free to offer an email address (or a number if you feel really trusting, but I never do)

Be sure to be done by 2 PM or so. Most yard sales will be over, or tapped out by that time. It will also help to bring a friend (preferably a friend that isn't after retro games) for an extra pair of eyes. Do it right, and you can hit well over 20+ garage sales in a day. Prioritize low-income areas looking to offload their older gaming hardware to earn money for the newer systems.

Personal success stories, all on 60 dollars, each on individual days:
-CIB N64, CIB SNES, CIB Sega Genesis Model 1, CIB Mario Kart 64, stack of early 90s Nintendo Power magazines w/ posters intact
-SNES: Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, Castlevania 4, various ~$10 games, GBA SP (pink version), Pokemon Yellow, Mario Land 2

continued...

This.

There is nothing more absurd than watching a "retro" system sit on the shelf at the Thrift shop for months straight...just because some dope on ebay dictated a price. Everyone, no matter what level of expertise knows that there is more variables than what is apparent on the surface.

I go off of actual value, not what Ebay/amazon dictates. Granted, it can take a long ass time, but It requires patience. I am currently shopping for another N64. I want a colored one, and have a budget. I will get what I want, within that budget 100% of the time. It may take a few months, but there are plenty of yard sales and flea markets.

I hate to sound like the American Pickers, but you will do better by bundling a seller's items and proposing a discount.

Box lots etc are another great way. Sure you may not need 12 copies of Madden 2000, but getting a lot for less than the total price of the one or 2 goods in the lot is still a win.

At that point, you might as well invest in tools. You may find out that some cheap carts are worth more parted out as a plastic shell than the total of the pcb and the shell.

Shopping for retro titles is like hunting more often than not. You must be educated on your prey. You must know your limits with your prey....Too large or too small or not even the right species and you could have an empty wallet. Waiting around and hitting the same places on the regular always help. Yard sales are an unknown wealth of games. I have found massive stockpiles of systems and games for $20, and talked them down to $10 just because I bought a pipe wrench from them also.

IF you don't mind paying more, it never hurts to ask your local retro place if you can keep a wish list there. If they come onto any of these titles they could call.

Money is the common denominator. You need to make your dollars go the farthest.

>This. Start sniping or give up.
I disagree. It is very simple to use ebay to get what you want irrelevant of the snipers.

You place your maximum bid ASAP, and screw them. It still is a game of the highest bidder, irrelevant of where the bid comes from.

Ebay has gone so far downhill in the last decade, it is not even funny. It is not a good place at all to find deals, or to be treated decent. There are exceptions, but for the most part, these sellers don't give a shit about you or the condition of the item. 2/3 auctions that I have won involving old things and moving parts have been 100% lies on the sellers part.

>>PSX Works 100% perfectly
Translation: Cd laser needs replaced.

>>Xbox runs and plays flawlessly
Translation: Cd drive does not open. Also, open Xbox live account with sellers personal credit card stored on it (still valid lol). Also, we ran out of bubble wrap after the controller. There will be shipping damage.

Every place is BETTER in every way than Ebay EXCEPT guaranteed stock. You don't know that a yard sale will have Bushido blade. But ebay does. ONLY buy from sellers who have feedback consistent with your values. Look for REAL feedback....It looks like a human put effort into it. I prefer sellers that specialize in games/gaming. Some poor feedback is guaranteed in that situation BECAUSE us types have high expectations that are let down by ebay regularly.

Good luck. That is the best thing to have.

Absolutely this. The herding instinct is a real thing and it's natural for people to avoid bidding on items with zero bids as they assume there's something fundamentally wrong with the listing/item that they have somehow missed.

Also look for auctions with ridiculous ending times like 3am monday morning. People list things in a rush but forget their auction ends at that exact same time 7 days later. I've picked up some incredible deals this way because nobody else bothered to bid.

Ebay knows this, they invest in items that people are interested in(this is fact, though the degree of which exactly is unknown to me. However, if you bid on an item, you WILL get more email updates about said item, regardless of if you are watching or not). The best way to have bids balloon out of control asap is to watch, bid early and check regularly.

When you bid early, you leave yourself open to nibble bidding, shill bidding, and really gain nothing as opposed to just setting a sniper to bid you max in the last seconds. The only, ONLY way you lose with this method is if someone happens to bid the exact amount as you, before you(first bid takes precedent if both bids are equal).

eBay is the only option for me right now. I live near Seattle aka Tech geek central... Everyone knows what everything is "worth." Goodwills either send stuff to auction sales or overprices everything and puts it behind the glass.

Oh what I would give for the 90's market...

I just started listing my collection on ebay because I could use some money and I've come to the realization that having a lot of video games is not fulfilling in any way.

>tfw item has 3 watchers, no bids and ends tonight

My advice, don't bother with auctions. Stick with fixed price and require immediate payment for everything. Otherwise you risk a lot a wasted time and frustration dealing with deadbeats.

I can second this, Seattle is garbage. I did get Twilight Princess for GC (not retro but nonetheless) at a goodwill for three bucks, but aside from that there's rarely anything at all that's not disgustingly overpriced. Maybe look on Craigslist in places like Marysville, managed to get an N64, two controllers and about thirty games (some pricy ones included) for something like 60 bucks.

Listing them as auctions is a common mistake.

You really only want to go auction for a few things;

1. The item is exceptionally rare and desired, think - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B0AtykLE_U En Espano, and you quite need things THAT rare, but you get the idea.

2. You can shill bid your own stuff. Really.

3. You have a lot of low-margin crap that you bundle and put a reserve/high starting price + shipping and call it a day.

Just undercut a little with BIN.

Is it feasible to buy a GameBoy Advance console today?
Is it durable/sturdy enough?
I won't be getting it for myself but for little kids, to get better rapport with them.

The only bad thing about GBAs are the dim as fuck screen. It's seriously awful to play unless you have perfect lighting. Go for a GBA SP instead. Or a GBA with a backlight modded in.

Just filter for 'newly listed' and 'buy it down'.
That's how I found this:
>1 PAL Dreamcast (burn-compatible)
>1 Power Lead/Adapter/Cable
>2 first-party controllers
>2 VMUs
>1 Madcatz memory stick
>Virtua Tennis
>£60, free 2nd Class shipping

What do you guys do when you buy a cart and it's dirty as shit? Sometimes I get shit that's listed as "tested" or "cleaned and tested", but it's so covered in grime that I have to make 3 or 4 passes cleaning it. I would feel bad leaving a bad rating, but they're sure as shit not getting a good rating.

What's the correct protocol here, no rating? Neutral rating? Send them a message calling them an asshole?

>> No.4261191

>>4261126
If you feel alright with not buying from that guy again, then leaving neutral-bad feedback would be acceptable.

However, the thing about most ebayers is, they do NOT want anything but good feedback. It doesn't matter how big/small they are... So just shoot the guy a message more or less telling him what you told us. Explain why you aren't happy- you could get offered a refund or a discount and it never hurts to try. After all, you could save some cash, and he avoids a(legitimate) bad rating- truly a "win-win".

Everyone but maybe some new sellers knows exactly what they're selling. If it's a big seller he REALLY knows what he's doing.
Remember that if you get sent a fake, or, ooorrr if the item description is clearly out of whack with what you receive(if you don't abuse this, ebay will take care of you 100%- there's a reason why sellers bitch about "ebay always siding with buyers".)

To elaborate to anyone like me and would need it specifically spelled out:
If you're trying to resolve anything on Ebay, go the diplomatic, civil route. Don't be that guy that spergs out.

I'm having trouble deciding, should I go for the SNES or GBA?
While GBA is 32-bit, some games look worse compared to the SNES version.

SNES

GBA is lower res, the colors on many games (including pretty much all SNES ports) are awful due to being chosen for maximum visibility on a non-backlit screen rather than aesthetics, and GBA audio is terrible.
