If you want the grind-heavy dungeon crawl experience, Shin Megami Tensei, Dragon Quest, and Wizardry.

Now that's funny.

Not him but I remember renting WA2 after seeing an ad for it in either EGM or Gamepro, and from what I remember the game was fairly ugly, the battles and "puzzles" were boring and unchallenging, and the story wasn't even remotely compelling. I asked a game shop owner if the game got any better towards the end or at least had a decent twist and he said no, so I just returned it early.

Maybe you could convince me to give it another go though, and maybe the first game too.

this will sound incredibly bait-ish, pleb-ish, or whatever the hell else but i have to ask:
What's so good about Valkyrie Profile? I've started playing it and it seems kinda repetitive ad bland... look at random character's story, recruit him, train him in dungeon, watch pretty animations, send him to valhalla.
The combat system seems fun, but I can't unsee how unfinished it looks near something like SRWOG endless frontier (which isn't retro, but i can't just unplay it and stop comparing both games).
Granted, I just started playing it and recruiting Belenus, how does it improve(if it does)? It looks like it has potential, but i don't want to sink over 30 hours into something before it gets good.

Golden Sun is not that bad, it's just kinda dull despite its good presentation. Like its protagonists, it lacks charisma.

That being said, if you like the music by Motoi Sakuraba then Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile and the Tales of... series are must plays.
For more puzzles, I was gonna suggest Wild Arms but you didn't seem to like it. Maybe Lufia 2, then.

>> No.4246143

>>4245885
It has some great dungeons: the puzzles and platforming elements are both well-executed, and they tend to have a strong theme to make them distinct from each other. The combat is fun, the character stories are interesting, the soundtrack is excellent, and you can customize your party pretty heavily. There's a lot to like. It sounds like the formula just isn't working for you, though, so you may as well drop it.

Endless Frontier certainly has flashier combat, but I'm not sure I would say the battle mechanics are actually any better than those in Valkyrie Profile.

KYS /vr/.

Anyway i just beat 2, a fine game with lots to do for completists, but not particularly hard without god tier equip either. Grinding casinobux I got into for a bit before realising carrying on and getting Dual Blade was better than the Dragon Blade. Would've liked to see the highlevel capsule monsters, but I've got a save so I can Ancient Cave whenever.

Ruins of Lore looks like only other good game in series but hearing it isn't quite the continuation of 2 it seems. Lufia 1 is sloggy and boring, I've tried before jumping straight into 2. Any opinions?
