When I played earthbound I thought it was pretty similar to dragon quest.
The grinding, the fact that it doesn't hold your hand.
You start all alone and slowly recruit other characters. And the new characters start at low levels (because fuck you).
Even the battle style is the same.
Except that earthbound is unique because is about a kid in the real world. if you like that try persona.
But, yeah, I think dragon quest should do the job, start with 4 5 and 6. They're also SNES.
or play mother 3, I don't care, so many options.
