423485 No.423485 [Reply] [Original]

Just got this for free today. the actual machine works, but some kid obviously thought it'd be cool to spray paint it then completely fucking botched it up. Sanding it back down tot he original plastic is now an impossibility, so what colours should I respray it?

Also if you're interested I can post some pics of the internals as I have to take it apart anyway.

Apologies if this isn't /vr/ material.

Please tell me he at least took it apart before spraying

Let's find out, give me a minute and I'll take it apart. Need to sand it down before I do anything anyway.

LikeI say the machine works so I think he will have.

>Sanding it back down tot he original plastic is now an impossibility
Why?
You're going to have to strip all that shit off before you even think about re-spraying it anyway, it's a fucking disaster.

Thank fuck for that, it's all clean.

>>423512
All the varnish from the original plastic will probably have been sanded off when he strayed it the first time, so if I take this paint off the original plastic will be a fucking mess. Plus I already have an original so a spray painted one might be cool, if it's done right. Need me some colour suggesions though.

Try a dab of this. It removes paint and doesn't harm most plastics in the brief timescale needed to clean (it is friggen MAGIC).

Obvious warnings:
* Be well ventilated. Seriously. Outside with wind.
* NEOPRENE gloves. This stuff will eat vinyl and latex.
* Keep away from the PCB/electrics/optics.

Just dip a Q-tip in, rub on the painted area for a few seconds, and wipe it with a fresh piece of paper towel (have a big stack of pieces of paper towel handy). Repeat until clean. Wipe periodically with a wet piece of paper towel to remove the excess thinner.

i was just about to post, but i actually agree with the guy you quoted. you're going to want to sand all the paint off anyway and apply a primer before painting it again. you might consider just finishing the sanding with a fine grit, like 600+, and leaving it like that

>> No.423553

why fucking bother. Take a $20 down to your retro game store, and buy a new one.

Or take a $10 to your local goodwill.

Matte black, then spray satin red into the cap and fling it over it.
Spray gloss transparent for seal.
If you use good quality paint instead of terrible shitty Valspar, it'll look better than this.

What the fuck happened here?

Also, the spring sems to be missing fromt eh power button. Not too much of an issue, it still works.

I'll check it out. I suppose I could use some earbuds for the fins.

a) Because if I tried to spend $20 on anything here, they'd look at me funny.
b) Because it's not about a PlayStation, I have one of those. It's a project.

he might have left the buttons on when he painted them and just covered the rest of the system. he probably also didn't use a finish

also i am going to recommend red with white buttons because red is a swell color

Failing restoring that case, you could pick up a broken one that someone spilled water on or something and combine the good case with the good internals.

wait, is the laser not fucked now or are you some kind of rocket scientist? there's a sticker on it man, says 'don't touch' and everything, it looks like a pretty important sticker dude. I always listened to the sticker.

The Net Yaroze? Anyone actually have one here? Ever see one in the wild? I'm still curious about those. I have a few compilations of Yaroze games and some of it is really cool, kinda like old PC demo scene stuff.

>>423646
Cool, it's modded. That's lucky on your part.

Personally I would paint it gold. I like gold. Not in a blingy way, but I just think it looks neat. I have a PS1 at home that I stenciled a big Atari logo on the cd lid.

PS1s at the moment are worth jack, chipped or unchipped. Chipped means as the games get rarer, you;'ll still be able to play digitally preserved ones.

Playstations aren't really worth a lot or sought after in a way that rarer, more expensive things are. Generally most people would take a modded one over one without a chip. I would pay maybe $40 for a clean, working, chipped PS1.

The later 900x models have no parallel port but this one does. You can just read the model number from the underside of the case anyway if he hasn't painted over it

Not that it's important, the only distinctions between PSX versions besides the menu design is having a parallel port or not, and having RCA ports on the back or not (or s-video too for Japanese 100x units)

It's smooth and so the layer over it won't stick properly, and the paint will glob up and look generally horrible. Also the added mm or two of thickness would mean that the buttons might not fit etc.

Also here's the sticker.
