It did. For whatever reason, the translation for OB64 contains language including damn and shit. While looking for pics of that to post as an example, this showed up. It's the kind of outward homoeroticism that you get over and over with these two characters, and without spoilig anything the major events that lead to the final conflict of the game are driven by the relationship exemplified in pic related. It's pretty obvious and the translation doesn't hide it at all.

I'd like to bring up something that happens to the prince character near the end, but it's definitely a huge spoiler. Suffice to say it's something that's still technically thinly veiled, but totally obvious as to what it means.

On topic, I'd say the knight character qualifies as a retro hunk.

Reminds me of the implied romance in Wild Arms 2. At first it seemed to be lost in translation, but I think the writer actually stated that Billy and Brad were just incredibly close friends. Could be a similar ordeal with Ogre Battle.

There's a revolution going on and the prince tries to get the knight to be his personal bodyguard, but this fails because the knight is too involved in the war. He then promises to become powerful to protect the knight himself and never be apart from him. During this time he's given a maid who is intended to be used as a prostitute; he spends all their scenes pining about the knight (and she falls in love with him, lol). Eventually it's revealed that the royal family has the blood of the Ogre Battle equivalent of Persephone/Proserpina, and the prince, wanting to obtain power to protect the knight, ends up becoming the incarnation of this goddess, who is the final boss that the knight has to slay (and everyone comments on how the goddess looks just like the prince). So yeah, thinly veiled but looooots of romantic pining and the fact that he ends up becoming a woman seems too heavy handed. Given all the stuff I mentioned, plus the fact that the knight already has a best friend character while his scenes with the prince have romantic sappy BGMs, I don't think anyone would buy a "good friend" explanation from the writers, lol.

To be fair the first game in the series, March of the Black Queen, had a pretty bare bones and cliche story, but the other three games in the series have very good writing. Let Us Cling Together focuses on the morality of war and the main relationship is between siblings, Person of Lordly Caliber focuses on revolutionary efforts and the main relationship is about male romance, and Knight of Lodis focuses on religious and political conflict, and for once the main relationship is a guy and a girl. All of them feature excellent writing, if any of it sounds interesting (and of course if tactics/strategy games are your thing), you should check them out.

Capcom's fighting games always give the dudes such nicely muscled bodies. Pic related, best bat best butt.

While we're at it, are there any retro VNs or simulators with a focus on male relationships? (I guess it doesn't matter if it's aimed at a shojo audience or something more explicit like yaoi)
