Name one (1) reason that this game is "bad" apart from it not having Kojima's name on it.

Protip: You can't.

Actually, you can't get into the first building if you don't use stealth. You literally have to be hidden when you enter the screen, then call your buddy to get you in.

Overall, your point is valid for most of the Metal Gear series, not just the non-canon Snake's Revenge.

It's not bad (it's the better of the two NES Metal Gears), but it's pretty flawed.

>Your codec buddies are completely useless in the game, with most of their advice being too vague or ambiguous to be of any actual use. "There's a gas room on that base"? Thanks for narrowing it down, Nick.
>Side-view segments are annoying filler with confusing control that well. Like why the hell is Snake dropping plastic explosives while he's crouching? I'm using the knife, not the handgun. At least dropping an explosive doesn't trigger an alert like on the overhead segments.
>Most of the obstacles rely on stocking up replenishable items ahead of time. For example, to get pass the first underwater tunnel in the first side-view segment, you need at least two oxygen tanks to refill your gauge. But the only oxygen tank prior to that is in a gas-filled room, which means you to enter the room twice, which means you end up losing a bit of health anyway.
>Speaking of which, the game has stages instead of being open-world like the MSX Metal Gears. This by itself wouldn't be bad, if it wasn't for the desert base which requires a mine detector to get through without being damaged.
>Pretty bad writing. One part of the game involves an enemy spy disguised as one of your buddies, who tries to lead into traps. But his advice are so blatantly false, it's easy to see through the ruse the first time it happens.

These are the only legitimate flaws I could think of that don't involve "muh canon".

pretty much every metal gear game but MGR does that though. even MGS4 does it and that's a fucking third person shooter.

>Overall, your point is valid for most of the Metal Gear series, not just the non-canon Snake's Revenge.

if you played most of them instead of watching DSP go through them you'd realize that's not entirely true. MGS4, MGPW, MGS5 are really the only ones where you can do run & gun right out of the gate while in the other games it's only really possible on a second or third playthrough (depending on which one you get the bandanna on) or if you're playing on easy and even the you're still fucked on bosses you can't faceroll through like the end or psycho mantis if you're playing the gamecube version of MGS1.

>Snake's Revenge
>Not Stealth
This is a meme parroted by people who never actually played it. The alert system is the very same one used in Metal Gear 1 on the MSX2.

>>4232618
>pretty much every metal gear game but MGR does that though. even MGS4 does it and that's a fucking third person shooter.
Not really. You literally can't enter the first building in alert mode, even after you kill all the guards. You have to enter the screen and use your buddy as a diversion to sneak in.

The closest equivalent in Metal Gear 1 is the entrance of Building No. 2 where you have to use the enemy uniform. I can't really think of a similar situation in any of the MGS games.

It has stealth IN it. It's just it's not all stealth. It's action-adventure that has stealth, shooting and exploration in about equal measure

I mean. Big Boss in MG1 literally tells you to stop playing at one point. Subtlety has never been a strong point of writing in Metal Gear games, not then, not now.

If you played the games I'm referring to instead of parroting memes, you'd realize that I am quite accurate. As >>4232643 pointed out, you CANNOT enter that first building in SR if you don't stealth it.

Fair enough, but "enter the truck to your right" is way more subtle than "there are no enemies in that train".

Who here on MG1 MSX went through the tank boss in the minefield by simply walking through it fast enough while taking damage? It IS possible, I did it once on a playthrough.

It sounds completely wrong to go against the boss that way but also weirdly satisfying.

Am I alone in thinking that the NES version of Metal Gear has some redeeming factors to it despite it definitely being inferior to the MSX version?

For one it's _SLIGHTLY_(I hope I emphasized this word enough) less linear. An example of this would be the ability to get Card#4 before even entering the first building. I also kinda like how they separated some floors to separate buildings instead of having them just be another floor in one of the other buildings. However this separation of things to extra buildings also leads to one of the biggest flaws in the NES version: the "maze" screens in order to get into them and the fact the solutions to these "mazes" aren't found anywhere in the game.

>>4233597
I'm sure I have gone through the tank boss in the NES version, although I can't remember whether it was by taking damage at a perfect moment and the just running trough the tank or by fucking with the transceiver (going to the transceiver screen resets everything on screen on NES version).

The NES Metal Gear really needed at least an extra month of work to be decent. The maze solution could've easily just been given by a POW or one of Snake's codec contacts like Schneider or Jennifer (LEFT LEFT UP LEFT IS THE WAY OUT).

Also, it looks like they were meant to relocate some of the items from the MSX2 version, since Schneider tells you that the bomb blast suit is on Floor 2 when you call him on the rooftop of Building No. 1. There's really no incentive to ever go to the rooftop on the NES version, since you get everything you need to access Building No. 2 (such as Card 4 and the enemy uniform) in other places.

Not a single mention of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake? Let's talk about it.

It really is quite impressive that they basically were able to accomplish everything that MGS did gameplaywise in 2D environment however MG2 also has ridiculous amount of backtracking in it. I usually don't like to complain things like this but it also features some bullshit like the morse code thing NOT being available anywhere in the game or in it's manual (at least in the Metal Gear 3 Subsistence version for Playstation 2 that I played) and the hand-gliding thing also didn't work the way the game claimed it to. Still for a game made in 1990 it is great apart from these little things. Thoughts? Opinions?

>or in it's manual (at least in the Metal Gear 3 Subsistence version for Playstation 2 that I played)
Konami fucked that part up during the localization. All the other versions and regions come with a tap code decipher chart in some form or another in the manual.
