Baten Kaitos Origins uses ATB with cards and it was really fun, so it's not that crazy of an idea

at the beginning I think the wall or outer edge is A, meaning combo or plus cannot reach around could be completely wrong but you can lose the rule where the edge of the playing board is 10 or A or 0 or whatever it is

Yeah, it pretty much does.

Especially considering that if you do the card quest on disc 4, you can play card against that one guy in Ragnarok, who can play with ANY card you lost.

TL;DR you can refine the best cards, and win that card again, even the rare character cards.
At this point if you wanna do this it's better to have a full collection so the guy is more likely to use the (refined) cards you're looking for.

I've often been amused by the reversal between FF8 & 9 and their card games.
8 so subpar yet Triple Triad is exquisite in its addictive simplicity. FF9 is among the best in the whole franchise yet Tetra Master is total ass.
