Is someone going to make a sequel someday?

>> No.4217609

Why? It was a mediocre-to-poor game that only got ANY notoriety by being an RPG on a console that was desperately starved of RPGs.

Is it really that bad?
I wanna play it

With a bit of polish, the battle mechanics could revolutionize the sRPG. Make positioning more important, more terrain, etc.

If by "a bit of polish" you mean "complete revamp, preserving only the character placement aspect".

The ideas are there and it's not awful. It was just clearly rushed and used as a quick cash in on the west's rpg craze.

>> No.4217635

God I hope not. That game was awful.

>> No.4217648

Quest 64's combat would have been way more interesting if you had two more party members - but the game would have to tell a real fucking story at that point.

>> No.4217832

>>4217591

There was as sequel in the making the looked very promissing. It would be everything the first one promised to be. Unfortunately it got cancelled for some reason, even though the first Quest sold quite well.

There's the tomboy-ish princess and the alchemist boy that stand out as kids your age and also characters with a lot of design put into them. I'll forever feel like they were supposed to join up with you as companions but got reduced to what they are now. As it stands we'll never know.

But yeah, there's almost no plot to this game. The only npc that kind of counts as a character is Shannon.

I loved RPGs and the N64 had none so I was all over this game when it came out and I loved it.

The story is NES levels of barebones and man each city was so empty. The only thing that kept that saved this game is the combat was interesting with the combinations you could do with your magic and I invested many hours into it.

I also bought the GBC game which I was disappointed that it was a Dig Dug Clone. Eventually a port/demake of the 64 game came out on GBC, unsure how it was but I guess they likely fixed many of the problems the N64 had.

Wrong. The battle mechanics were so novel at the time seriously no one cared about what happened in the rest of the game

It was easy in the best way possible because it was just a lot of looking around with 0 BS and enjoying the battle system

I rented Quest 64 after beating Ocarina and while kinda neat it was a real stepdown.

I have played the demake, it's surprisingly close to the original. Combat is the same as far as leveling/spell layout, though some spells aoe now take up huge portions of the screen which makes dodging tricky.

The towns and music is pretty close to the original as I recall. There still aren't shops, npcs are still boring and even some spirit bubble are in the same places as the n64 versions. The dungeons are now straight up mazes with items sometimes hidden in dead ends and are now easier to get turned around in.

The story is where the biggest changes are. You still go out to find your dad, get four magic elemental rocks and save the day. Each town has the same problem as the console version with fighting the same bosses and following the same plot points. BUT the ending act is very different. You get to go on a world spanning tour with the princess from the rock town, some other type of child wizard/alchemist hero and fight a dragon to get some sort of macguffin to let you fight Mammon in the end. There's a lot of dialog and while it's not much to say this: it is quite a few steps above what the console versions has.

What's the point then? Game needs an objective, you need a motivation to keep playing.

No plot/story leads to some open sandbox game. Those are piss boring.

Much like FF:MQ, Quest64 can be considered one of "baby's first RPGs" kind of game. Once you got Water to level 7 for healing and I forget the level for Earth for Magic Barrier (24 maybe?), the game became quite a joke. The combat mechanic was novel and actually allowed for you to dodge most attacks, magical or otherwise if you were fast and good enough. Compared to most other RPGs at the time where it would just be based on an agility stat if you got hit or not, the idea was something fairly unique to an RPG. It is not a terrible game and as pointed out above, it is one of the few RPGs on the N64, compared to the abundance of them on the SNES. Unfortunately, the plot did mostly blow and about the only interesting character as also mentioned above was Shannon. I wouldn't mind a sequel at all, but it would have to address and overcome the shortfalls of the original.

I played through Quest 64 once when I was younger, and I didn't hate the game. After reading up on the Japanese version (which came out a year after the US release, despite being a Japanese-made game), I decided to play through it again.

A lot of changes were made to the Japanese version, some of them minor, which make the game quite a bit better. Critical hits were introduced, there's a timed attack system (and you get additional MP from the second hit, too), AGL and DEF increase at a faster rate, and there's a little flash of light, accompanied by a sound, when a stat levels up, which is kind of nice.

On top of that, enemies can now drop items until you have three of whatever item they drop, instead of the cutoff being one item. Some NPCs give you different items, but I honestly can't remember what all they gave you in the original, so I'm not sure what changes were made there. Bosses were also reworked a bit, as well. Solvaring was toned down, but some of the later bosses were buffed, and had their AI / movements changed a bit. There are some bosses that move backward during their attack, so you have to pursue them, and can't just hang back and hurl magic.

The Japanese version also has a proper ending, which wasn't present in the original release, for whatever reason. I haven't gotten that far yet, though. A few names were also changed, some of them rather odd. Like Brian becoming Jean-Jacques.

Anyway, it's been kind of an enjoyable experience, playing through an enhanced version of a game I finished as a kid.

Not that anon but this is a fucking retarded statement. Story doesn't matter in a game. If it's there, great, but it isn't required. Faggots like you are the reason "cinematic experiences" have become the preferred focus of developers because you care more about cringey, autistic stories than good gameplay. Do you need a story to play Pac-Man? No. If you want story, go watch a movie or read a book. Games are for having fun, and I don't need "motivation" to play fucking chess or poker.

Quest 64 was an interesting game. I remember some people on GameFaqs were fixing it up and released a patched rom with spell balance so you couldn't steamroll with Water/Earth while making Wind/Fire more viable.

They game would have benefited from some indicator of where your spell would hit as well as adding that princess as a party member, (which seemed to be the plan according to director notes). The music was nice and the ability to search for spirits was a great way to reward exploration. It goes without saying that adding some plot would have done wonders for the game as well.
