hey, /vr/.
just picked up a top-loading nes and metroid.
i've never played before; what can i expect?
anything important i should know?

metroid general, i suppose!

>> No.421107

There are only two types of areas in the game, vertical scrolling and horizontral scrolling.

In areas like norfair, be sure to bomb every square inch of the bottom of the floor or shoot every inch of the ceiling to find areas to go to next.

Those two giant towers at the beginning of the game are the only times climbing is that long. I quit the game the first time because I thought it was really just going to be that over and over again.

all great info, thanks.
how do i know the names of different areas?

here OP maybe this will help

>> No.421143

first playthrough? you need a map, draw it yourself if you feel like it

>> No.421154

>>421124
Theres two main areas, Brinstar and Norfair.
You start in Brinstar, when everything turns purple and red and bubbles and the music changes to a lava sounding song its Norfair.
If it turns blue and yellow and changes music you'll be in Kraid's lair.

Really you'd only know this from the Manual or having played Super Metroid first.

>> No.421169

oh and make sure you have the ice beam before you go into Tourian to face Mother Brain/take out the Metroids. Either have it the whole time or go grab it again.

>> No.421204

how do you break "non-solid walls"?
do you need to use missiles or will the normal gun work?
i'm trying to figure out where i've been on that map.
i don't think i've gotten that first energy tank, but i have 10 missiles and i've been to norfair.
just been roaming kind of.

>> No.421231

>>421204

Shots or bombs.

>> No.421225

The Wave Beam isn't necessary to beat the game, whereas the Ice Beam is required. It's better to stick with the latter for the entire game, because each beam you collect replaces the one before it.

>> No.421234

>>421143
I wish more games still required you to do that. I played Myst recently for the first time and I had a lot of fun drawing stuff for the puzzles in real life.

>> No.421236

>>421204

You can shoot some (such as with the first energy tank) but most require bombs because the aren't at shooting level.

won't using this kind of kill the fun of exploration?

each beam replaces the last?
so can i go back and get an old beam that i had replaced, or is it possible to fuck myself over by replacing an important beam?

>> No.421273

Metroid was literally the first video game I ever played. My map was so huge, it folded out like a poster you'd hang on the wall.

my dad would help draw it for me and write down stuff I told him to even though he had literally zero interest in the game. thanks, dad.

>> No.421305

>>421248
Here's the problem, all the corridors largely look alike and the game lacks a map system of its own, unlike Super Metroid and beyond.
Metroid II did not have a map system either but all of the areas were a lot more distinct and winding.
That map does mark where all the bosses, items and upgrades are though and a map without them would be preferable.

>> No.421341

>>421265
You can go back and get beams that have been replaced, yeah. Every beam that you don't currently possess will be available in the place where you found it originally.

>> No.421343

>>421265
You can go and get the previous one again, it respawns after you collect another one.

Actually, I think the Long beam combines with Wave or Ice.

>> No.421443

>>421341
>>421343
What these guys said, but if I remember correctly, there's no real reason to go back to a previous beam type, if you're progressing properly.

>> No.421469

>>421443
Ice beam would be the likely candidate to go back and replace, since I think you get the wave beam after it, and, well, pretty much everyone knows why you need the ice beam by now.

>> No.421532

op here.
is this game fairly short?
also btw, this is my first metroid game.
how does it compare to the others?

>> No.421543

>>421532
It can be short if you're skilled in the game, but it will probably be fairly lengthy for your first time.

And I would say even though it's the original, Metroid's design was so well done that it still holds up significantly well today, even in comparison to newer 2D entries. I wouldn't even recommend Zero Mission, the remake, over it. I would recommend playing both because they are different experiences.

>> No.421570

>>421532
I'd say it's quite good compared to the rest, and you'll appreciated the marked improvements with each successive installment.

The game is probably around 5-6 hours long for those who don't know where they're going. If you do, it probably takes about an hour to 90 minutes to finish - at least for me.

The major tripping points are: the fake lava in Kraid and Norfair (it's fake if critters can pass through it); and the destructible floors in the far right of Norfair (purple area).

>> No.421586

>>421469
Theres like two places to get the icebeam and they;re both close to the exit of norfair.

>> No.421616

This is awfully convenient. I'm playing Super Metroid for the first time; it's my first attempt at any Metroid game.

A lot of the areas are sameface. You will get lost. Even with a map.

That said, making a map as opposed to reading one will help you learn the map better. Like writing a word will help you learn it better than just reading it.

Very. Still not as good as Super imo, though. That could very easily just be my nastalgia kicking in. I started playing games on the NES and gameboy, but didn't start really understanding what I was doing until SNES.

op here.
i was exploring kraid's lair and got to the area in the top right where there are 3 identical series' of rooms stacked on top of each other, starting from the vertical hall way on the right and moving left.

there was a ball of electricity or something in the top left of these rooms, which i shot with a missile and destroyed.

i have no idea what it was or what it did, and it isn't on the map that an anon posted earlier.

any help?

>> No.423397

>>421086
Pretty tough game but like most good retro games, you get much better with practice. It helps to keep notes on where you've been. Check walls and floors for hidden entrances. Red bubble doors require a missile to get through. Once you find missiles, switch to them with the Select button (I think) to fire them. If you have to take damage to collect a small amount of energy, the trade off generally won't be worth it. Hm, what else? Jumping can be a little sticky at times, so practice it a lot early on.

Also, the music is phenomenal. Have fun!

>> No.423448

>>421248
Yes, but only because it tells you where everything is.

See if you can find a more simplified version that isn't too revealing. Essentially what the Super Metroid map system was like.

You'll find a lot of the areas look too same-y, making it needlessly difficult to figure out where you are. It becomes less a game of exploration and more a game of navigating a maze, which isn't very fun as is.
