Crouch or go prone (C or P respectively) whenever in a firefight, don't be afraid to spend a merc's turn running as far away from a bad situation as possible (r to run).

Always use cover - trees, rocks, cars, whatever - it doesn't restrict your line of fire if you're right up behind it and they'll catch the majority of bullets that'd otherwise ruin your merc's day.

eh, it really depends on how you want to use him. i suggest increasing physical stats to max, especially wisdom, agility, dexterity and health because they are slowest to raise.

after that, it all depends. leadership is good for training militia and talking to people in general, marksmanship if you want to have person who'll be able to shoot shit for free.

no matter how you build him, you'll always be able to get specialist on what you need from AIM, so you can't really mess it up.

no. you're way overestimating what dexterity does in ranged combat. at best, it's equal for shooter as agility is. also, melee/hth fighter will benefit WAY more from than anything else.

the difference between agi and dex for shooting purposes is one increases you chance to dodge, other increases your chance to hit agile target (by same amount).

that's all. if you want dedicated marksman, action points from AGI will benefit you a lot more than DEX that he'll never use, since he won't repair/heal shit.

it's actually pretty unbelievable how much dialogue jagged alliance has (this applies to all games).

hell, jagged alliance 1 has at least few thousands lines of unique voice acting (60 mercs and each of them has more at least 50-100 lines, possibly even more), "dynamic" voiced inventory (remember half life being able to count down time? well JA will tell you how many bullets left gun has and it's condition. or tell you how much money have you found).

all this in 1994. now compared this to bethesda voice acting from oblivion or skyrim (despite having infinitely bigger budget) and weep for dead industry.

obviously JA1does 'macro' stuff a lot better and DG was always more about multiplayer and the campaign is a bit tacked on, but there is a storyline in the main campaign, just not apparent after the first mission.

personally, i'm playing DG before i start legit JA1 game to play with some mercs somewhat like but i'm almost certain i won't be able to have them in my JA1 campaign for various reasons.

so yeah, DG is more of a "what happened between metavira and arulco" kind of stuff, the "macro" took a backseat (or more like a trunk i guess), but it's there.

>>402513
pretty much. i think it's a shame so many people skip JA1. not only they're missing metavira, but a lot of great mercs as well (obligatory Ivan rant). oh, and you can't say you know shit about jagged alliance until you heard Fox giggling after she stabs enemy with her "amazing dexterity"

Yeah I think I will give it another go at some point.

I love how different the maps look from pictures I've seen. They probably quadrupled the amount of ground and tree textures from JA1. That's one thing JA1 would've benefitted from so much. The map layouts have obviously been crafted with care and love but at some point it just gets dull because it's all different shades of brown, yellow and green.

JA1 really needs a remake.

>> No.402854

Honestly, I went into JA2 not expecting much, but after getting over the difficulty curve, I came to really enjoy it. I just really wish it had some more replay value. When it comes down to it, it really is an extremely simplistic game outside of battle. And while the fact it's barebones aside from taking more and more cities, that does nothing to detract from the experience the first time around. I don't know, it always kind of struck me as Fallout without any story, sidequests, or exploration.

it looks too "mod-like" for me to play it instead of just playing jagged alliance though (dem portraits). also no idea how it handles mechanics not present/changed in JA2 (water snakes, mercs leaving with cash/mercs leaving in general, inability to hire people day1 since you're shitty nobody). 2/10 wouldn't recommend instead of playing JA1

>> No.403000

Dunno, maybe similarly to them not wanting to hire with you because you have a bad rep...

>> No.403074

>>403000
i'm not sure exactly how JA2 handles bad rep, but hiring mercs and keeping them is actually pretty complex in JA1. it's not really that easy to piss off mercs in JA2, meanwhile in JA1, people will leave/refuse to get hired for several reasons (starting from you being too unknown, firing too many mercs, getting too mercs killed, or just plain sucking at your job.). people will leave if they carry some money found in battles, mercs that hate each other will even fucking kill each other. so many details that make JA games what they are, and chances of finding someone who'd bother to actually replicate all of it would be slim (oh, and we all know how back in action turned out, not that it was any surprise.)

i don't think you can find many "remade" games that make the originals obsolete, and that's counting games that have a lot smaller attention to detail than something like JA series.

>i don't think you can find many "remade" games that make the originals obsolete, and that's counting games that have a lot smaller attention to detail than something like JA series.

Yeah, but with a turn-based game it's a lot easier. You would ideally have the near-same game mechanics with just visual/ui upgrades and maybe some optional additional gameplay stuff..

Maybe one day the JA1 source code will be released like the JA2 was.

lol, even with this approach to the game (playing 1.13 and nothing else) where you basically rob yourself from what the game has to offer, you couldn't possibly see everything.

looks more like this type of game isn't for you really, especially since you compare it to fallout. reason to play JA is one of the best TB systems ever made with great attention to detail, well crafted world and open world you where can do whatever you like.

yes, fallout might be a better RPG (if you even count JA2 as one), but it has completely different focus than JA and comparing them is pretty bad idea (i'll still do it and say both JA1 and 2 has way more exploration than fallouts). and fallout's shitty combat is nothing to write about.

if you are a storyfag, i could see where you're coming from, but otherwise you're just full of shit.

1.13 doesn't rob you of a thing. I'd hardly call adding improvements and extreme levels of customization an issue. Also, I don't know what definition you're using for "what the game has to offer", because there's not all that much going on in the grand scheme of things.

Actually, I enjoyed it quite a bit, and I hated Fallout. Though it's cute you can say I'm full of shit when you claim JA2's world is well crafted with great attention to detail, when it's largely barren, and what isn't barren is full of empty houses. The lack of anything to actually explore or discover is one of my major complaints, in fact. There's some nice little things like the robot and the bugs, but they're few and far between.

I'm not one of those retards that just downloads mods without even understanding what they do. I went over the change log with a fine toothed comb multiple times, and discussed the game with someone that had played both versions all throughout. I'm well aware of what the differences were, and nothing of value was lost.

The battle system is very well done and enjoyable, more than good enough to play the game for. Everything else, however, is quite bare bones. I'm not saying I won't play it again in a few years, but the replay value is still quite low.

Marksmanship and teaching are the most important skills for the first missions.

I usually get Buns+Steroid right away. Both are good shots for the price (90 MRK), plus Steroid is a good mechanic and Buns is a decent medic and an expert teacher. I make my IMP merc low exp (since it's gained quickly, and I'll always have him) with high leadership, wisdom, and marksmanship. Ira is good as a mule and a medic. I would get Lynx as a fifth even if you can only hire him for a day. With a rifle, he is far more useful than two grunts with pistols.

If you're not playing 1.13, one strategy is to hire Reaper and GUS for a day and quickly recapture Drassen. Armed with rifles and kevlar armor (which you can keep after they leave), they are basically untouchable since the army has only pistols. If you're quick, you might even be able to knock out the SAM site before they leave, allowing you to bring reinforcements right into Drassen.

If you're playing 1.13, trainers are way more important, because you can call on your militia to help you take adjacent sectors of a city. Essentially you can just take one or two sectors to get loyalty above the minimum requirement, quickly raise a militia, and then take the rest of the city with zero risk to yourself. Kinda lame, but effective.

generally, whatever is focus of your IMP (and it can be anything really), you want physical stats that affect what you do maxed first and remaining points put into any skill, whether it's leadership/marksman/med/repair or explosives (although that one is probably a waster since you can train it very easily). these shouldn't go lower than 35.

>>418549
in his defense though doing what he suggests is perfectly viable and there's plenty of mercs who start with 90+ agi/marksmanship and higher level, which does give them significant edge against your 85 cap (and while you might say you'll catch up in marksmanship soon, that's not the case with everything else).

You don't seem to be as much of a dickhead as I thought, so I'll go back to discussing it.

You're training a militia of people to defend itself against the army attempting to enslave them and 'purify' their population of any imperfects.

The mercenaries aren't supersoldiers, and they're small in number. Training militia helps to even the odds against a massive, well funded army.

Your employer fled the country himself, and expects you to hire enough men to take over an entire country with around 35,000$, including purchase of supplies, and he wants you to do it in 30~ days. He can get pissed all he wants with unrealistic expectations.

>You're training a militia of people to defend itself against the army attempting to enslave them and 'purify' their population of any imperfects.
well yes, training militia so cities are able to defend themselves is fine, but the time doesn't stop just so you can train the militia it neither takes so long to do, nor you need to focus all your mercs on it to justify not doing anything for month.

>The mercenaries aren't supersoldiers, and they're small in number. Training militia helps to even the odds against a massive, well funded army.
yes, but again, you don't need to have every single mercenary to train militia, leaving 1 or 2 mercs in city to do it doesn't stop you from doing anything else (ie: liberating the rest of the island).

>Your employer fled the country himself, and expects you to hire enough men to take over an entire country with around 35,000$, including purchase of supplies, and he wants you to do it in 30~ days. He can get pissed all he wants with unrealistic expectations.
but you don't have 30 days to do it, you just have to make some progress over time. also, your employer can be a dick, faggot or anything else, you still took the contract and it doesn't excuse you from finishing the job if you're mercenary worth his salt.

Since I had Razor as a mule and sitting in Drassen for the entirety of the game, I decided to send him on a suicide mission towards an army patrol armed with only a couple of throwing knives. They spotted me alone and I got a chance to surrender, which I only saw once before. Went through a cool cutscene with the queen interrogating him, and then shortly escaping the cell after.
I had wirecutters and could have easily left the compound but I decided to pick a fight with some guys here. A room full of rocket launchers was too good to pass up shooting a few indiscriminately.

I split into two teams one to san mona, one to drassen. san mona team does all the quests (leather shop/boxing). drassen team does the airport and mine, then get skyrider and do the SAM, then chopper as far south and get the hummer and do Balime. get the chalice. other team does west SAM and chitzena and the tourists. $47000 plus whatever you sell to Tony on easier difficulties you can do that in a day.

The north east block of San Mona has a leather shop with a guy in it. He tries to sell you a Kevlar+leather jacket (for 950 fucking dollars) but if you refuse and talk to him again he'll say his sister Maria was taken by Kingpin's men and forced to work as a prostitute in the Shady Lady, which is in San Mona's north center tile.

Go in the front of the shady lady, talk to the hostess behind the desk, and go through the door. There's a break room with a key in it, and this key opens the back door. Be aware there IS a patrol inside the building, who will raise the alarm if you're seen inside that room. So when he's gone, walk inside and take the key and get out of that room. At the end of the hall is Maria's room. talk to her. once the hallway is clear of the patrol, bring maria out and to the back door. use the key on the door that leads outside; if you don't the alarm will sound. walk her back to the leather shop.

reward: 1 deed which can be exchanged for $10k and the Kevlar+leather jacket that was being offered to you previously. (if you're playing 1.13 mod with covert ops, the jacket won't raise suspicion, even if you treat it with compound 18, since it has no camo value)

oh, and if for some reason you don't get the conversation about maria, it's because he doesn't trust you enough. you probably touched something you shouldn't have (greyed out items on the map inventory page) so go to drassen and free the children from the sweatshop in the center city map tile:
either by forcing the owner to leave by intimidation or talking her out of it. (super fucking high leadership required) ... or just kill her.

doing any of that will raise the trust level for you all over alruco.

Get your IMP merc with at least 75 marksmanship, high wisdom, and I guess around 60 leadership, which is useful for training your militia once you capture towns, since earlier cheaper mercs tend to have lower leadership.
Make another IMP merc as a mechanic, pump up that mechanical skill, high wisdom (good for anyone really, affects how fast other skills increase, and wisdom is super hard to gain), and dexterity.
Keep Fox and get Hitman, he's a pretty cool merc, maybe get Igor too, then build another IMP merc whenever you want to do anything with.

>I keep getting mixed advice on what stats to raise.
that's because you can have all sorts of viable IMPs.

>wisdom
should be always 85, at worst 75

>health
mid if merc will be doing shit in city/high if you want to participate combat heavily

>agility
high for combat merc, can be lower if merc won't be moving a lot

>dexterity
high if you want be competent in melee or of you want to do anything with explosives, medical or mechanical, mid/high otherwise.

>strength
high for melee, migh/high for everyone else.

>leadership
while this is mostly to train militia, it also helps with talking to most npc so you should always have someone in squad with high leadership, and those people are pretty hard to find.

>explosives
35, you can increase it but it's literally the easiest skill to abuse training in realtime, just get mine from drassen sam site and in no time you have master demo expert. if you don't abuse this, i haven't really heard about much people who allocate a lot of explosives points to their IMP and you don't really have a big reason to considering AIM, this isn't JA1 where everyone who was competent with explosives either wouldn't join you (rusty and high tier mercs), or was fucking retarded (everyone else)

>mechanical
35. high if you want to specialize i think specializing IMP in mechanical is much more viable, since it's harder to train and you don't have so many great AIM mercs to cover it.

>medical
35. while there isn't trick to increase med as fast as explosives, similar to that skill, i don't think many people make their IMP a dedicated doctor, especially since you are able to get cheap ones that will be roughly equal to what your IMP would be medical wise. and even with 35 you will fist aid whatever you need.

>marksmanship
and well, i'll leave this up to you. just keep in mind 85 isn't necessarily needed even for frontline merc since you'll increase it extremely fast.

>> No.482327

>>482134
you really dont need leadership above 35.

by this logic, you shouldn't even make IMP in the first place, since you don't really need him.

i.e. whether Dex affects accuracy, exactly how cover works, bonuses in certain sectors, undocumented merc bonuses.

btw in tactical the Delete & End keys display Mercs and Enemies vision range and press "F" will display info about the tile (light value, camo type). also, when the battle ends ctrl+shift+f will pickup dropped backpacks and remove attachments from items on the ground at the same time. shift+s will remove ammo. shift+a will sort ammo into crates, ctrl+shift+a will sort ammo into boxes.
