I'll agree with OP, honestly. Blood is recognized within the retro FPS community, but it got virtually zero recognition beyond that. If you ask 100 random PC gamers to name their top 5 '90s FPSes, you'd get shittons of Half Lifes, plenty of Doom, some Quake and UT, maybe a Duke3D if you're lucky. Blood is a black sheep.

I thought you said underrated, what's Blood doing there?

Now, this here is easily the best FPS noone EVER talks about. It has good weapons (plenty of), three playable characters with their own weapon and level sets (they are even voiced), smooth mouselook (with key mapping mouse speed adjustment in-game separately on X and Y without shitty setup.exe of the build3d titles), great music, great engine, nice picture-in-picture gimmick frequently used in some weapons and in level design, it came a month (or two or three, i can't remember) before Duke 3D... I can go on and on and on. And not a single fucking person noticed the game that has more right to be called Doom 2 (it has the same core principles but expanded) than the expansion ID came up with.

I am going to recieve a lot of flak here but i played it on PC after Carmageddon because some guys on forum called TM2 the best demolition game ever and it was just really, really unsophisticated and simple in comparison. I played the first episode of Blood and part of the second back in the 90s but never finished it (unless I did and then forgot about it). I loved a lot of things about the game - great atmosphere and weapons, tough enemies, fun protagonist, awesome soundtrack. Loved the 1920/30s sort of vibe - Lovecraft, gunslingers, gangsters...
Watched some Let's Plays of it recently and the later episodes seemed a bit generic, except for some of the city levels (the one where bombers are flying overhead stands out)... is that the case or are the later episodes worthwhile?

third episode is one of the best, in my opinion. it has mundane environments that you can imagine people actually living in before the events in the game, but it also does a great job at making each level feel solid. the first level is probably the best. PD is good and an improvement in many ways, but GE has better level design and missions. I think PD relies too much on trial and error, since you can fail an objective just by picking the wrong path. This makes most missions fustrating and not fun.

This is the default defense of every GE fan. You know PD has more of everything so you attack some highly subjective quality and say "it... it was just better man".
>I think PD relies too much on trial and error, since you can fail an objective just by picking the wrong path
Lol dude, every video game is "trial and error", what are you even talking about? Either you're good at the game and you walk your way through, or you get fucked a dozen times, learn from your mistakes and get better at the game. Goldeneye is no exception. And in PD I can't think of a single time you fail an objective just from "picking the wrong path" because there is no wrong path. The levels are very open and non-linear and that's part of the fun.

Face it, GE didn't have anything. It had its time and place, but PD improved on it in every way. The sheer wealth of content and customization options blow GE out of the fucking water. PD crushes GE with the girth of its massive bulging cock and leaves it bloodied and defiled upon the ground.

E1 = E5 > E2 > E3 = E4

I think the first and last episodes are the best. First one will give you the best atmosphere and environmental detail but E5 is 100% about gameplay. It also gives you new enemies to deal with like those plants, mini Calebs, tesla and dynamite cultists that are a lot of fun. E2 is a close second after those two.

E3 and E4 are both very decent. E3 is another episode very heavy on atmosphere, as is E4, can't really decide between them. I wouldn't consider any of the episodes bad but Es 1, 2 and 5 are definitely my favourites.

The actual gameplay of Blood is a bit uneven, but I understand why it has a place in many gamers' hearts. The aesthetic of its fictional universe is tight, consistent, and well developed. It's not ripped directly from some other artwork - rather, it manages to effectively synthesize various elements into something new. I also think the CD soundtrack is remarkable, other than the carnival song, which gets annoying.

I will say my favorite underrated game of all time is Shadow Warrior (1997). How different is it from the remake? Remake's free on Steam right now so I got it but it's pretty bad.

I hated the graphics in that game. the enemies just looked like different formless brown guys, and then there were the awfully drawn anime girls (deviantart tier).

there's also the way they completely lumped japanese and chinese culture/stereotypes together. at first I thought it was a tongue in cheek thing, but in retrospect, I'm not so sure. americans tend to think of entire continents as countries (i.e. they often talk about europe as if it was a country, as opposed to america as a country).

the level design could have been much better. there were instances where I actually found every single secret in a level BEFORE I managed to find the actual exit. this is where I'll get called a babby or to git gud, but I swear that I never had these issues in D3D or Blood. those games must have been doing something that SW didn't do.

the voice acting and the jokes were definitely the strongest point in the game, but I'm not sure if it's good enough to carry it.

Shadow Warrior is a better game than Blood, and deserves much more to be called underrated.

Why?

3DRealms was a more professional company than Blood.

The theme is more versatile, easier to being modded.

SW has better and funnier enemies. Blood monks are terrible, and everyone is just loud and annoying.

SW has more professional leveldesign.

That is shared by many acknowledged people as well, although neither game got critical acclaim on their release dates.

Apogee/3DRealms was a well established company which created many games before and after SW. Monolith on the other hand was just handed the game and didn't create anything noteworthy after that.

With that said, Blood could still have been a good game, but it really wasn't. Like Redneck Rampage, the whole game is just a one joke story and gets old fast. Some of the enemies like the monks are shouting their same awful speech all the time, which gets on the nerves fast. One important rule in gaming to not base characters on a few frequently repeated speech, let alone yelling, because it becomes annyoing and earraping fast. Shadow Warrior addon Wanton Destruction made the same mistake with the "stop you" yeller ninjas.

Third, terrible leveldesign and texturing. When I saw the train level, I couldn't believe how ugly its' texturing is. Also the game lacks all the good nonlinear design what was good in Duke Nukem.

That's all. The game deserves a fair 5/10, no more.

I played it briefly for about an hour but from what I could tell the gameplay was legit.

Only noticed two differences. One is that the colours of GDX looked slightly different and seemed to lack the pixel shading that the real game has. I don't know if the colours themselves were slightly off, or if they looked off because the pixel shading qualities of the original weren't there. This actually kinda sucks and heavily detracts from the atmosphere and art style of the real game. Other difference I noticed was that those harmless civilians now scream, "Please don't hurt me!" Never heard that before, guess it was from the alpha or an earlier version. I don't like that either, seems too dark, I prefer their whiny "Go away!" which practically begs you to shit on them with a big smile on your face. This isn't a big deal though.

Oh, another difference is that the sprites have that weird cut-out paper thin look when your view perspective is a bit angled. NESfag was complaining about this shit in the Shadow Warrior Redux port. That's here, too, w/e.

I don't care that people recommend BloodGDX, whatever. Dude has indeed done a good job and it is nice playing it at super smooth framerate and perfect mouse controls. (It's actually weird for me to play it with perfect mouse settings because my muscle memory of the game is tied to vanilla Blood's mouse.) I do prefer the original though personally just because it looks much better -- and who knows what small pieces here and there are missing from the versions that were released later, such as Caleb quips or other interactive moments for example. This version is buggier than the real game too but I understand he's still ironing it out and the project hasn't hit 1.0 yet. But yeah, it's not a bad offering by any means and gameplay wise it is fucking Blood, unlike that BloodCM pile of AIDS.

They did that in the retail release. It's a random sound from a set of clips whenever you injure them. eg:
"Don't hurt me!"
"There's no place like home!"
"Go away!"

>3DRealms was a more professional company than Blood.
This is such a ridiculous argument so I'll answer it with another ridiculous argument. Where are 3DRealms now? Dead as shit. Where are Monolith now? Still making AAA releases.

>Monolith on the other hand was just handed the game and didn't create anything noteworthy after that.
Blood, FEAR, NOLF1&2, Shogo, Condemned, Aliens VS Predator 2 are not noteworthy? They're all games that were reviewed very well and loved by fans. Blood was their first game, every company starts somewhere. It is 3D Realms actually that didn't create anything noteworthy after SW.

>Some of the enemies like the monks are shouting their same awful speech all the time, which gets on the nerves fast.
Cultist speech in their made up language is actually one of the things I love most about the game. You're stating an opinion, which isn't actually a fact, and it also happens to be an awful one.

>Third, terrible leveldesign and texturing.
I personally love Blood's pastel coloured look. It has far superior lighting and shading effects that weren't in Duke or SW. It also has higher res textures than SW and Duke did. Actually if you play both Blood and Duke in DOSBox at 800x600 for an extended period of time you'll notice the graphical bump when you switch to Blood from Duke. I'd wager you're used to seeing Duke in sourceports at 1080p while you only see Blood in DOSBox at low res and of course that is an unfair comparison.

>> No.4214059 [DELETED]

>>4214057 continued

How is Blood more linear than any of the other 2.5D games? Even ignoring the fact that you have boots of jumping (and dynamite jumps) which allow you to sequence break even key door requirements, the game is intricately designed and offers you a great deal of freedom of approach, often having multiple paths to get to the same place. Even the first level alone can be approached however you'd like, and that's ignoring the fence window trick. Actually Blood is the only 2.5D FPS I can think of that has levels that are intentionally made to be able to complete without even getting all the keys as part of its core design (without using jump boots/jet pack/other tricks and without finding a secret exit). E.g. Overlooked Hotel allows you to use back way secrets to access rooms that would otherwise require keys. I don't remember this being in Duke. More linear levels like Train (a fantastic level btw, linear =/= bad) are actually the exception. Hell, even in Train, the most linear level in the game, you're given a choice of entry when you get the skull key; you can use the elevator route or you can use the skull door from the opposite end for that particular section. The game also gets a lot more non-linear past the first episode. Have you actually even played it?

I always wanted to play this but I heard it's bugged where there's a random chance late in the game you can't get a key item and it's basically just game over.

This game is great! One of my favorites growing up. I should play it again.

>I think this is mainly because the dominant theme of the game is serious. The humor is there, but it never dominates.

This is the best way to make a game world. A lot of games are ruined by self-aware lolrandumb "humor". Yeah I know the thing that just happened is dumb, you don't have to tell me thrice.

Out of all the build games this one is my favorite. The XPacks had better levels than the base game though, imo.

Why go with a specific date if you're not even going to try to make it so much as even look a bit remotely like that date?

Nothing in that game even remotely implies 7th Century. I mean, I know it's a fun comedy football game and it's not supposed to be historically accurate. I'm not that autistic. But what I'm saying is what's the purpose of the "621 AD" part? Why not just "Ye Olde Pigskin" or "Barbarian Blood Bowl" or something?

Cringy edginess aside this was a surprisingly good horror game.Everything from the setting to the audio in general was incredibly eerie. .

A very strong, artistic refinement of Mega Man 1 & 2's game design

This game did a lot of things right, but too much switch-hunting in the level design. Definitely underrated though.

The setup makes the game sound like trash. Just reading it was enough to make me decide not to buy it.

Some random guy gets sucked into his TV and has to become the Destined Savior of TV World. That works fine for tongue-in-cheek cartoon comedy games/movies like Toonworld or Who Framed Roger Rabbit. But "light-hearted tongue-in-cheek cartoon comedy game" is not the sense I get from Nox.
