While I do think having a better source port would go a long way to boosting Marathon's popularity and reputation, a lot of people just shit on every aspect of the game when they get the chance. Which normally I wouldn't care, it's a niche game, it's not for everyone. But god damn, discussing Marathon is basically impossible on /vr/ because any mention of the game just upsets people to the point to where they HAVE to shitpost about it.

Is it your first playthrough? Marathon 2 is by far my favorite Marathon and is one of my all time favorite games. If you enjoyed M1 you should love M2 because it's just the same game but with greatly improved level design. Make sure to savor it and read all of the terminals. Even the ones that seem pointless contain useful information in context.

It is my first time playing, I'm enjoying it so far. I played through M1 on normal and enjoyed it quite a bit, the game was still challenging because everything was unfamiliar to me and the tense atmosphere put me on edge. M1 was a lot more stressful and I played it more cautiously due to the atmosphere and tension brought on by some maps, so I was playing quite differently from my usual high-speed action Doom ways, but Marathon 2 doesn't quite have that same tension as the first one and overall feels much more natural and "Doom-like" to me when I play. Maybe it gets some tense maps later on, but so far there hasn't been a map with the same tension and stress of the Pfhor chapter maps from M1 (which were also some of my favorite maps).
>Fortunately for you, the game only continues to increase in difficulty.
I hope not too difficult. I'm used to playing Doom on UV and so far the game's not too difficult, but "Curiouser and Curiouser" had a pretty rough start and I'm noticing more resistance from the game in general. I'm sure I can manage either way. But boy am I glad to see Pfhor fighters again instead of scores of troopers on the past few maps.

Boarding the Pfhor ship was late into the game. Don't worry your little heart, M2 delivers.
>I'm used to playing Doom on UV and so far the game's not too difficult, but "Curiouser and Curiouser" had a pretty rough start and I'm noticing more resistance from the game in general
Curiouser and Curious is the first road bump if you're playing on Major Damage, with Bob's Big Date being the second. I consider myself an autist and I wouldn't consider M1 or 2 very difficult, it's M3 where the difficulty really spikes. Infinity is the "well you've played the series this far, so there's no point in treating you like an idiot" game. I'm not going to go into detail though, that would ruin the fun.

It looks like you can't map actions to the mouse with FS-UAE (just tested it with my Mac version). At least they state in their documentation that only keyboard and joypad events can be remapped.
https://fs-uae.net/input-mapping

But since you you can't look up and down in Gloom, playing with the mouse isn't really necessary.

So you either have to use a pad, remap everything to keyboard or just use the default key bindings of Gloom:

Now that I've looked at the map better, I remember Neither High Nor Low was another map I enjoyed playing, I really liked the central spiral staircase and a few other sets from it. There was one Pfhor ship level I liked but I can't remember which one it was, I liked it just for the bizarre and alien design of the level. It had a large open room with dimming lights that connected to other open rooms, with lots of weird wall textures, and I think it was the same map with a long hallway with a double monster closet trap right before a drop-off into a large, bright room with a large group of enemies all facing a statue. Neither High Nor Low was a really fun level level, but it could've been better It was originally supposed to be a vacuum level, so you'd gradually lose oxygen and the oxygen tank is at the very top of the map
>. It had a large open room with dimming lights that connected to other open rooms, with lots of weird wall textures, and I think it was the same map with a long hallway with a double monster closet trap right before a drop-off into a large, bright room with a large group of enemies all facing a statue
Yeah, that was Pfhoraphobia. It's one of the very few levels in the game without either a save station or health terminal. It's pretty fucking hard if you're playing on Major Damage or Total Carnage.

>>4173384
Well, technically nothing is stopping you from playing M2 first, but I would highly recommend playing Marathon chronologically. The general consensus is that M1 is the weakest of the series, but it's still necessary to understand the story, and it helps you appreciate the improvements that M2 and M3 have. Also, the latter M1 levels are really fun, it's just a bit slow when starting out.

I'm the other anon, but I'd recommend playing M1 first. Except for two or three levels (namely Colony Ship For Sale, Cheap), the game still holds up decently even if it does show its age as being the first game in the series (and a mid-90's game in general). It'll also help make more sense of M2's story, if you care about that (there's plenty of reading in both games so buckle up).

Was that those hunter statues, or was it the statue that the group of Pfhor were facing in that map? They at least have Juggernauts and the MOAH as potential bosses.
CSFS,C! was a really lame map when it came down to the switch puzzle. Having to run back and forth all around the map, with those slow lifts after each minor adjustment... That's actually a bit funny. At least they recognized its flaws though. So far in M2 nothing's been that bad, Charon Doesn't Make Change was a bit annoying/stressful to explore because of the rising water levels though (don't know why the made some of the first levels so water focused). More recent maps have been enjoyable though, even if challenging. >XBLA Survival -

This game mode was added into M2 by Freeverse Studios when they ported it tot he Xbox 360, but it's surprisingly fun. Very hectic and has a nice arcade feel to it, with scores included and all. Fight waves of increasingly difficult enemies. Can play on either 4 preset maps or any other map of your liking.
>Marathon: Phoenix - http://simplici7y.com/items/marathon-phoenix-2
Phoenix is probably most renowned custom scenario. Decent story, lots of new weapons and boasts impressive map design. Well known for its difficulty. Highly recommend this scenario over all others.

I love Doom as much as the next guy but the fact that it isn't just another Doom clone is Hexen's biggest draw in my opinion. I loved the pseudo-Metroid feel with the exploration and key/switch hunting, multiple classes, and such. It isn't without faults but it's still a fantastic game. Personally I think it could use one more weapon for each class and have the segmented, final weapon function similarly to Strife's Sigil, where you could still use it while you were acquiring all of its pieces, each phase doing something different. Add Wendigos and Reivers to other hubs and make Centaurs less annoying, like have them go into their defensive stance randomly few like 2 seconds rather than after every single hit they take.

That would solve all the actual issues I've seen people bring up: lack of weapons (1 new + 3 versions of the final weapons), enemy variety (it's there but Raven opted to restrict certain enemies in certain hubs), and Centaurs.

I know you're baiting, but I'll bite.

Of the three games, Blood is the only one that actually settled for one coherent style, and stayed consistent to it throughout the whole game. Furthermore, it had countless absolutely stunning scenes. The OST was superb.

Duke had a few kino moments (especially on the space levels), but 99% of all enemies you encounter just look like generic brown turds. It's the same in SW. I don't even remember the OST from SW.

The level design in Duke was good, but not as good as the one in Blood. The Duke3d design had to resort to enemies spawning out of nowhere, which in my opinion is a sign of poor level design. The SW level design was shit all the way through.

Lastly, I've often seen Blood get shat on for its AI, but out of Blood, Duke3d and SW, Blood is the only game where I've actually seen enemies follow me around corners properly.

I think I like Duke more than Blood because though level design varies, when Duke has good levels, it has REALLY goddamn good levels, memorable ones with great action and exploration. Derelict is one of my absolute favorite levels in an FPS ever, it's large, tense and dangerous, the atmosphere is 10/10 and completely fits the setting of an abandoned/captured by aliens oil tanker out in the ocean.
There's no land in sight, it's cloudy, thunder cracks, you board the ship and immediately you're under fire, clearing the deck and making your way below, it's dark and silent, sometimes cramped, with monsters lurking in dark corners all over.

I like Blood a lot, I love that it challenges me and doesn't hold back, but the levels don't feel quite as memorable. That the themes aren't as varied as in Duke I guess can be considered a drawback to some, but honestly the themes Blood picks they stick to and do very well, the completely flesh level stands out, as does the amusement park, but there's just fewer I feel.

>Lastly, I've often seen Blood get shat on for its AI
I think maybe it's because the AI in Blood is actually pretty mean and has good pathfinding.

Though it's also exploitable, like how you can frenetically jump and duck and jump while in a gunfight with cultists and they'll desperately try to hit you but quite can't.
Which you can argue actually makes sense, because Caleb is really fast, nimble, limber and springy, I mean try to get into a gunfight like that IRL with an opponent that can actually move like that.

Heretic and Hexen (the first games for each here) are my favorite Doom clones. I actually thought the 4 weapon limit for Hexen was fine. It is nicely balanced in fact. You had your choice of 3 different characters so I felt it more a less gave enough variety. As for the Centaurs, I never found them to be annoying at all. All of the enemies are pretty well balanced imo. The game could have just probably used a few more enemy types is all. Some undead enemy types would have been pretty fitting for such a game

The Wrath Of Chronos mod that has 5 classes and turns the game into an RPG is pretty fun to play. I would recommend it to anyone who liked the game.

In fact I ended up liking these games so much that sometimes I prefer them to Doom. Reasons being that at times the standard game level designs are actually better at times and the atmosphere (especially for Hexen) seems more consistent at times if that makes sense. The music is also fantastic for these games. I would still put Doom over both of these games of course but these games are absolutely amazing. Very glad I played them.

It is just that some of the enemy types are reused like the chaos serpents and some are exclusives to certain hubs. You also have a some bigger boss enemy types which will get seldom used. If it were side story or continuation of Hexen 1, not directly involved with the Riders, like Heretic 2 was to 1, then I wouldn't mind so much. Assuming they kept the setting of Cronos and not the bland, uninspired world of Thyrion.

This is pretty much it.
Caleb's ideal fighting style is basically a highly mobile blitzkrieg, one of the only one man army video game protags who makes any sense.
His ideal fighting style is a guy who runs around, jumping and shit at a crazy speed, laying down a crazy volley of fire with scarily decent accuracy. If he takes a hit he has a real problem until he gets close enough to someone to take a big bite out of their heart after he rips it out of their chest.

Fun fact: Caleb was inspired by the Saint of Killers from Preacher.

Ultima Underworld's atmosphere is amazing, even now. The gameplay, combat and dialog haven't aged well, but the controls are surprisingly solid once you get past the fact that movement is 90% mouse controlled and it isn't, and that isn't a WASD and mouse game.

Except it's still a remarkably interesting and difficult RPG that was hugely influential to every RPG that came after it, including Elder Scrolls. Every musical instrument in the game is playable and that's amazing.
There's something to be said for a game that's solid but at the same time doesn't hold your hand at all.

But to be fair the few webm's of Amiga FPS I posted (Gloom, Breathless, Nemac IV and Genetic Species) were the better ones. Fears or Alien Breed 3D don't look that interesting enough to post here. But real stinkers like "Death Mask" on the other hand.. maybe I'll look for a "good" video too. This has got to be one of the worst FPS I ever saw. I'm really fond of Duke Nukem 3D's weapons

>Pistol: is rapid and has it's own ammo supply, you can always fall back on it and it isn't actually a bad weapon.
>Shotgun: has a reasonably tight pattern, you can use it at a decent distance and score good hits. Looks cool as fuck.
>Chaingun: looks badass with the barrels taking turns firing.
>Rocket Launcher: makes a satisfying KABOOM on impact and scatters enemies, shattered glass and furniture debris all over the place.
>Pipebombs: do much the same thing.
>Shrink Ray: is hysterical in how you automatically step on any close shrunken enemy in vicinity, can be used to basically one-hit dangerous enemies like Fat Commanders.
>Freezer: deflects and bounces around corners, meaning numerous tactical possibilities, as well as just saturating a room with freeze rays to get everyone inside, like the Shrinker, you'll automatically boot frozen enemies right in front of you, shattering them in hundreds of tiny pieces and leaving a puddle of defrosted corpse water for you to step in and track all over the floor, good for the Protector Drones, which can't be shrunk. (I also like using the Pistol to shatter frozen enemies, like in Terminator 2).
>Microwave Expander Cannon: makes enemies loudly expand and swell from internal heat, rupturing in an explosive shower of gore, causing serious splash damage.
>Devastator Weapon: good for fucking up anything and everything at any time, just a short burst can turn an entire squad of piggies into giblets.
>Trip Mine: it's ok.

What the fuck, the soundtrack is great. The whole game is great. The OST was done by the same guy who did DN3D, Lee Jackson. He used actual non-Western instruments when he was composing the music. The OST has a great range of moods and themes.

Man, fuck all of you saying SW isn't as good as good as DN3D and Blood. I think it's the best one, with Blood in a close second. The weapons are phenomenal and satisfying. The enemies are great to fight. It is technically more impressive than DN3D and B in many aspects (ladders, vehicles, etc). I think most of the official levels are outstanding, and even the countless fan maps are still enjoyable, because everything just comes together so well.

Something that I've noticed abut the sound design in Blood (compared to Duke and SW) is that Caleb talks far, far less. A lot of his noticeable voice lines are laughter (from killing) and screaming in agony (from being hit). Most of his actual quotes are scripted. Compared to Duke and SW where they are constantly saying things when picking up weapons and killing. Another thing about Blood - it's actually the enemies that make most of the memorable noises and sound effects in the game (compared to Duke and SW, where the enemy sounds are far less noticeable). Go ahead and play Blood with this in mind. You will be able to recognize the enemy quotes and grunts immediately because they are far more distinct and important.

I felt the need I should go back and give a proper explanation as to why I recommended Phoenix first (assuming you even read this). That is because after many, many hours of playing Marathon only one thing really impresses me, and that is map design and how the map feels when played. Phoenix is great from a map makers perspective, even though it falls behind in other areas. For example, I do not really enjoy the custom weapons of Phoenix, while on the other hand the custom weapons from Eternal and Rubicon are really satisfying to use. The music is okay but again, Eternal is much better. And while the maps are well made, they sometimes lack that classic Marathon atmosphere. I'd say if you're looking strictly to continue your Marathon experience, that Eternal or Rubicon would be your best bet.

A lot of criticism of Marathon level design on this board basically boils down to two things
1. switch hunting isn't fun
2. the levels are too easy to get confused/lost in
I've personally never understood these two criticisms as switch hunting in Marathon is the same as Key hunting in Doom and while there are a few genuinely complicated levels in Marathon most follow a simple formula of (Door is locked > Find switch > come back > Door is unlocked > Continue). But yeah I'll give you that, most Marathon maps are a bit basic looking and aren't really that pretty.

Light gun response only takes 2 frames so you could in theory fire 30 times per second without issue. 20 if you want to actually draw the playfield between shots so the player has something to look at.

What, you mean an official reboot by Bungie? I love Marathon but it's prooooobably not the smartest decision. Look at D44M. The name recognition went a long way to helping the game sell. It is a good game, but the Doom brand has a lot of power, everyone knows about it, even the younger audiences who may never have played the original games. Marathon does not have the same reputation. Only a few people know about Marathon and even less care. You could argue that the Bungie name alone could sell the game, and that is true, but I feel like a modern audience would not like a Marathon game has to offer. I think a Marathon reboot would ultimately end up just being a Halo clone. I think things core to the Marathon experience, being info terminals and abstract level design, would probably be cut in favor of cutscenes/dialogue and more realistic environments.I could be wrong, maybe Bungie really has it in them to do the series justice, but I lost a lot of faith after they made Destiny. I would rather Marathon 4 not exist than it be a soulless husk.

That being said, just imagining the possibilities of a modern Marathon game...There's a lot of potential IMO

I didn't organize my thoughts very well. I'm in favor of a Marathon reboot if Bungie is dedicated to keeping it Marathon and not making it Halo/Destiny. I'm just saying I don't think Bungie has any incentive whatsoever to bring Marathon back, I don't think it'd be profitable enough for them to ever consider it from a business perspective. But if we're ignoring the realistic aspects of a Marathon reboot, I think the series has a lot of potential. You could do a hard reboot, and "recreate" Marathon 1 or you could continue the story after Infinity. More than anything I'd love to see how they'd depict the Pfhor and their ship. I have my qualms with nuBungie but damn their art is good and I'd kill to see them give Marathon an artistic makeover. Also, I think Marathon could be Bungie's answer to people who miss Halo's arena multiplayer. Just...don't slow down the combat too much. Marathon multiplayer should always be hectic and crazy with weird maps, never slow and dull on boring maps.

I have to disagree with you about Bungie's intentions. I have a gut feeling that Jason Jones is starting to regret joining ActiVision. Because Destiny is ActiVision's property, Think about what Bungie will be when ActiVision is done with them. Marathon will then be their biggest IP at that moment, and would you rather make a completely new IP, or would you rather build off of something that was relatively successful? I think the fact that Marathon is not well known is actually an advantage, because it means that the standard hasn't been set yet, and Bungie can stretch creatively. Sure, it won't be 1:1, and it never will be, but just because the reboot exists doesn't erase the original from history. If it fails, people will want to see the IP at it's finest and will be eager to play the originals. I think Marathon's biggest downfall is accessibility. I think appealing to casuals might actually work this time. I'd rather a remake happen than not happen.

I'm not going to say you're wrong, because I don't actually know. But Bungie isn't ran by little kids. They made a similar deal with MS and they cried about it, so I have a hard time believing they'd sign ANOTHER 10 year contract without being fully aware of the consequences.
>and would you rather make a completely new IP, or would you rather build off of something that was relatively successful?
Well I thought of that back when Bungie's contract with MS was terminated and MS inherited Halo. At the end of the day, they made Destiny. Will they make another IP when they get the chance? Hmm, can't say.
>I think the fact that Marathon is not well known is actually an advantage, because it means that the standard hasn't been set yet, and Bungie can stretch creatively
I can agree with you there. There's enough groundwork to work off of but not enough to creatively box Bungie in. There's a lot you could do with the Marathon universe. I'm not even talking about just the Pfhor and S'pht and Lh'owon, there's entire races mentioned in the lore you never interact with, like the Nar and Nebulons, and most importantly the Jjaro. There's also freedom of choice. You could basically reboot Marathon at any point in the story and at any time at any location and it cannot be incorrect because you could always attribute it to space/time magic
>Sure, it won't be 1:1, and it never will be
I wouldn't want it to be. D44M for example, was a lot of fun, and still felt like Doom to me. It's a lot different than a 2.5D shooter, but I was able to run around with a shotgun and kill demons. If I'm able to maneuver abstract levels and gun down Pfhor while reading about the lore, then that's perfect for me.
> I think appealing to casuals might actually work this time. I'd rather a remake happen than not happen
That's the thing, I dunno if a reboot would appeal to casuals. It depends on how it's done I guess

For Amigas to run MacOS? Pretty much.
The joke that the fastest 68k Macintosh is an Amiga is from the 90's already.

I player the demo of In pursuit of greed a lot when I was a kid, I always thought it was so fucking weird to have a cow-man as a character. Looking at videos of it now, I have no idea what had me so entranced, but I spent many hours just playing the same level (it was hard as fuck for me at the time).

Just finished this. Got it from GOG and it worked fine apart from a long delay whenever I paused the game.

It's difficult (hitscan enemies everywhere), but I accidentally made it even harder for myself by completely missing the "bullet time" power.

Plus most of the angelic powers you get are awkward to use during combat so it's often easier just to stick with the standard weapons.

Pretty good otherwise.
