4194051 No.4194051 [Reply] [Original]

So, the only Sonic the Hedgehog games I've played are Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on Gamecube. I've never played any of the 2d, classic (and highly praised) Sonic games. I had a SNES growing up - missed out, it seems. Never got any of the collection games or GBA titles.

Which ones are must plays? Skippable ones? Must avoids? I was tempted to just play 1, 2, then 3 but there's the GBA ones and Sonic CD (what is that?) and then there's Sonic 4, episode 1 and 2 (and 3 maybe?) and then Sonic Mania is coming out on PC too and it being highly praised, so I'd like to give it a try.

Any advice starting my adventures with Sonic the Hedgehod, dudes?

Other than gotta go fast?

This order
1 (MD) > 1 (MS) > 2 (MS) > 2 > Chaos > 3 > &K

I recommend you get Sonic Jam to play the Mega Drive games and just buy the Master System ones, they're very cheap.

You played SA: DX but never unlocked a single extra game?
The classics being 1,2,3 are good. Why you're confused by SonicCD is odd. it came out for SegaCD. It was a Sonic game...on a CD. Avoid most ports of the classics other than the recent mobile remakes.

3D Blast is a like it or hate it deal. Spinball too.

The Advance/Rush games are nothing like the classics and play like even less fun versions of the Adventure2 Sonic levels only 2D

the 8-bit ones are neat and Tripple Trouble is a pretty legit entry.

I think I am confusing/combining Sonic CD with Sonic 3D.

I played Sonic Adventure DX so long ago, I might have played any unlockable classic once as a novelty but younger me must not have cared about them.

Thanks.

>>4194059
Nice, thanks. What are the big differences between the two versions of 1?

>> No.4194078

Must plays are 1, 2, and 3&Knuckles. It'd be a good idea to try out Sonic CD as well, but it's not as vital. Play in release order.

A guy above recommended trying the Master System versions of the games, but I wouldn't do it for much more than curiosity. They're not bad or anything but they're way inferior to the genesis trilogy.

Plus they're really good and different enough from the main series to be worth playing, with brand new zones, music and mechanics. Who cares if the main series is better.

>> No.4194403

I recommend 1, 2 and 3&K. Check out CD but its not for everyone.

Dont go in expecting to be blown away, especially with 1 and 2. They're fun, solid games. The more you play them the more you'll understand the layouts of the large levels and how to control Sonic, and your enjoyment of the game will increase. Don't feel obligated to keep playing them if you dont like them, but if you just play through each of them once you won't really have that solid of an inderstanding of them.

Memes aside, you dont always want to go fast. A lot of the time you need to manage your speed, dont try to just blast through everything.

For 2D, it's going to be Sonic 2 -- it has the right balance of level length, difficulty curve, unique levels, banging soundtrack... essentially it's the go-to and then branch out depending on how obsessed with it you are lol

Sonic Unleashed, which is only half a shit game. Best enjoyed through the level pack mod for Generations.

>> No.4194818

Sonic 1 has some slower, boring design. Sonic 2 is where a doubtful player should start.

Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles was originally made as one game, so the proper way to play them is the cartridges locked together. Play them after Sonic 2.

If you like the Genesis titles, try Sonic Advance 1-3.

Sonic Colors and Generations are good, though they both have a lot of 2D and Sonic Colors is a bit overrated IMO.

Some people like Sonic CD, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Lost World, or Sonic 4. Some people think some or all of those games are shit. Your mileage may vary.

Haven't played Mania yet but I'm sure it's excellent.

Have been playing Mania. Can confirm, is good game. First act of every level is the same technically, however there's added stuff to all those levels so you can play them in a different way. So far so good, just got the 6th emerald and am on my way to the 7th.

Not OP, but is Sonic advance really worth it?

I love the and grew up with the Mega drive games, and while Sonic Advance looks like it would be the same kind of fun, the design of sonic really puts me off.
Is that something you get used to while playing?

The first is really good, very in tune with the classic series. 2 is a bit of a speed-fest and misses the mark somewhat and 3 is somewhere in between. You'll probably stop noticing the design eventually, the spritework is well animated and full of charm.

Thanks! I'll check out 1 first.

It's not so much that I hate modern sonic, it was fine in Sonic Adventure in my opinion, but in 2D sidescrolling game it just looks out of place.

If you're willing to play on mobile, the not retroAndroid and iOS remakes of Sonic 1 and 2 are the definitive versions that were remade using the widescreen Taxman engine, which is one of the guys that worked on Sonic Mania. Just use a bluetooth controller if you're not fond of touchscreen controls. If you really don't want to play on mobile, then you can just play the Megadrive versions or emulate them. Then you should play Sonic CD, which is available as a Taxman remake on both Steam and mobile devices. So your options for CD are: buy an actual Sega CD, emulate it, play the remake on PC, or play the remake on mobile. Finally the last game you should play before mania is Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Unfortunately there isn't a Taxman remake available for it yet so you'll either have to play the original on the Megadrive or emulate. If you plan on emulating it there are roms that come with Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles pre-combined. That's all you really need to play before Mania. I haven't played the GBA games so I couldn't tell you if they're good or not. Definitely do not play Sonic 4 it's actual garbage. If you want to try the somewhat decent modern 2D games you can try Sonic Generations and maybe Sonic Colors. None of the 3D games are really worth checking out at all. That's it, good luck and have fun.

Oh they aren't? I haven't played them. I shouldn't have put information about a game I don't know anything about, my bad.

Sonic 1 was competent and and for the most part fun. It's got the "worst" special stage but it's pretty unique so still worth checking out. People rate it lower than the others because there's less to do. Fewer actions the player can take, fewer items, the level design is good but has a few parts where it stalls (especially when lava is involved). Also the final boss is pretty underwhelming, it's literally just parts of the floor and ceiling slamming down.

2 introduced a charge up to the spin attack, which functions not just as a more useful attack now, it counts as a new method of movement. You can charge up and move up quarterpipes easily, and the level design takes that into account. Levels are more tightly designed and have more paths, while being smaller than most of 1's, overall an improvement. The special stage has an issue in which one of your two characters is either controlled by the AI or your dumb little brother, which can make you lose. Despite that it's a lot of fun. In the main game, Tails can be controlled by your dumb little brother with no downsides. The bosses on the whole are cooler, but not as different as 1's were.

3&K are separate games that you need to play together. Don't play just 3 and don't play just K. Play them literally together, the games plug into each other and become one game. 3&K introduced a save feature, lets you play as whatever character you want, gives each character something special that the others can't do. The level design is flashier, sometimes emphasizing graphics over other things, while still overall better than 1 it's not as good as 3 (albeit one thing it does have over 2 is multiple routes that only one character can unlock). The game is also notable for having both the best and worst music from the trilogy. Carnival Night zone is fucking awful but after that you head into the awesome Ice Cap zone, it's jarring.

Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are absolutely must-play. They're what 2D Sonic is all about. Sonic 1 MD is alright too, but not as fleshed out as the sequels. The Master System versions feel very different, I'm honestly not a huge fan of them.

If you have a GameCube get the Sonic Mega Collection and Gems Collection. It will have all the sonic games worth playing and few you might get a kick out of.

People will argue Gems isn't worth it, but it is. It has Sonic CD and while it's the PC version with the US sound track it's still good. Both soundtracks are good contrary to what people will say.

It also has Sonic R which is a fun but short racer.

If you have a question on them ask I'll be happy to answer.

>What are the big differences between the two versions of 1?
They're two entirely seperate games and as such both worth playing.

Out of this guy's >>4194059 list I'd reccomend leaving Chaos until later, it is just not on the same level of quality as the other games he listed. I'd prioritise playing Sonic CD above it. Other than that, it's a top list covering all the essentials. I wouldn't recommend the Sonic Jam versions, however. They're not quite perfect. The Mega Drive originals are the best way to go.

Sonic 1, 2, 3&K are all worth playing. I would say if you play one, play 3 with the Sonic and Knuckles cart locked on. It's an epic quest but really good. I do believe that the GameCube collection has this locked on version but IIRC it must be unlocked. Read up on it. All the Genesis games are relatively cheap, shouldn't run you over $10 a pop, Sonic 2 can be had for a song.

Sonic CD is weird and definitely more about exploration and discovery than any other Sonic, the definitive version is on the iOS/PC. Worth a check out, if only for the excellent soundtrack and sublime visuals. The iOS ports of Sonic 1 and 2 are great as well.

Far as the GBA Sonic games, the portable offerings were all ok. Advance 2 and Rush on the DS were my favs. Avoid Sonic The Hedgehog on the GBA. Avoid all Genesis ports to the GBA for that matter.

Sonic 3D Blast, Spinball, and Sonic 4 are not BAD but not GOOD. If you're a newbie, get the prime chuck. Don't settle for the lesser bits.

Shit Tier: Sonic 06, Unleashed and Heroes can be ignored with impunity. They have their defenders but for me, I hated all 3.

Recent Rival Solid Tier: Sonic Color and Sonic Generations. Neither quite recaptured that initial spark for me but Generations came dangerously close and is hella fun. Colors was pretty fun too.

Finally, Sonic Mania: I cannot put it down. It's been a blast from start to finish and worth your time. I almost recommend playing the original games first because I almost feel like they will be a disappointment after Mania, I think it's that good!
