Anyone else who have grown up with the PS1 but as an adult your beginning to like the N64 better?

>> No.4168046

Growing up, I had an older brother that loved games, so I was lucky enough to play both. I played everything from Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Kazooie to Ape Escpape and FF9, and honestly, I've gotta tell you, the N64 is just the better system for me. I played both quite a lot, but I always found myself endeared towards the N64. The PS1 games always felt like they lacked color, vibrancy and humor, they were so fucking edgy and "hardcore", and they usually weren't of the same quality as the best N64 games. N64 remains, to this day, my all time favorite consoles. Not because it had a larger library, better controller or anything like that, but because it had the best games. I still enjoy playing Star Fox 64, Perfect Dark and a few others on a weekly basis. Don't get me wrong, I like the PS1 a lot, but there just aren't as many classics.

>> No.4168067

Dunno, to me it's the opposite. I was a teen back then so I had the money to play both semi-extensively and kinda liked the N64 more, but ever since I got easy access to the full library I realized there's not really a lot of stuff that interest me. Saturn is my new 5th gen waifu.

>> No.4168076

The Nintendo 64 is probably the console I've played the most, mostly Golden Eye and Smash Bros.

I've had both of them for so long that I'm not sure I can say I really grew up with one as opposed to the other, but I get the PS1 a couple years prior to the N64. Born in 1992, got a PS1 in the Christmas of 1998, and it was my main console for a couple of years. Crash, Spyro, and Ape Escape were the highlights of that time for me, although I also remember some other platformers like Frogger 2 and Ms Pac-Man Maze Madness. Several of my friends had N64s and I had never owned a Nintendo system before, so that made the N64 seem really cool to me, I was jealous that they got to own games like Mario 64 and Star Fox 64. I finally got an N64 in 2001, not too long before getting a Gamecube and a Dreamcast too, so it wasn't my main console for very long. I did get to play some of the N64's late releases when they were new though, like Paper Mario, and over the next few years I went back and played the N64 classics that I missed, like Mario 64 and OoT.

Overall, I do prefer the N64 to the PS1. In fact, the N64 is simply my favorite console. I'm not exactly sure when I became aware of that, but it's true. For me, there's no other console that has such a high number of fantastic games. Outside of FF9, the PS1 doesn't really have much that brings it to that level for me.

If you judge by the N64 library, it was more a console for younger kids as well as fps-playing goons, while the PS1 was more a console for teen edgelords and older gamers with more refined tastes, especially for JRPGs, which the ps1 to this day has one of the most excellent selections of. The N64 had the best fpses, 3d collect-a-thons and ARPGs (mainly because of OoT and Majora's Mask), but the ps1 had its fair selection of those genres AND tons more. I'd never choose an N64 over a ps1, but it does make for a very good supplementary console.

Honestly, the Saturn too had an overall more impressive library than the n64, especially if you count all the Japanese exclusives. Once you start digging the Saturn quickly turns out to be the most interesting console for someone who grew up in the west and most likely missed out on 95% of what the Saturn offered. For me it's cleary ps1 > saturn > n64 in that generation, but they were all great and worth owning as they all really offered unique experiences, had distinct profiles of strengths and weaknesses, which is what makes consoles interesting to me in the first place. The 5th gen was definitely an idort's dream.

PS1 was better for this genre, though. As good as the two N64 Zelda are, they alone can't compete with Alundra, Brave Fencer Musashi, Legend of Mana, Mega Man Legends 2, Vagrant Story, Tales of Destiny, Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Eternia, Parasite Eve, Parasite Eve II, The Granstream Saga.

It depends. The ps1 definitely wins in quantity here too, but OoT and Majora's Mask are true classics that also casual normalfags still circlejerk and nostalgiafag about. Only a few games have become so hugely influental and universally acclaimed as the n64 Zeldas, and the only game that matches it in the ps1 library in that regard is FF7. But if we disregard the juggernaut factor I agree with you.

I felt this way more towards a lot of the N64's catalouge, especially with most of Rare's work on the system. Always felt like I was playing a vidya version of a Filmation cartoon what with the stale art direction and bland dialouge filled with shitty puns. And don't even get me started on the shooters...

I had both and always preferred the PS1. The library is just so fucking massive and it covers every genre imaginable, especially if you factor in import games. Same goes for Saturn in that regard. I've bought probably 10 import Saturn titles this year alone.

>> No.4169839

I had and still have all 3 systems since they were new, I always preferred the N64 more. PS has many games, but in most cases, I prefer to play 4th gen stuff when it comes to 2D or RPGs. Also, in the 2D aspect, Saturn wins that edge.
For me, N64=Saturn>PS
PS's library and legacy can't be denied and many of my fav 5th gen games are on it, but nowadays, I gravitate more toward N64 and Saturn instead.
Back in the day I spent most of my single player time on the Playstation, while used N64 more for multiplayer. However, I think single-player games on N64 and Saturn were just as good if not better than the best PS games. Both Saturn and N64 have a lot of interesting stuff more so if you include imports.

Nobody said that it had THE BEST games, just that it had a wide variety, which is absolutely true.

I'll admit that I don't know too many rail shooters on PS1, but it did have the Ace Combat series, including Electrosphere, which is still considered one of the best flight combat games of all time. It also had plenty of 2D scrolling shooters. DonPachi, DoDonPachi, Gunbird, Strikers 1945, R-Type, etc. Saturn did excel in this area as well, but that doesn't mean the PS1 was bad at it.

As for FPS, while it's true there's nothing as sophisticated as Perfect Dark, PS1 did have Disruptor, Medal of Honor, Doom, Duke, Descent, and Power Slave.

For action adventure, there's Legacy of Kain, Tomb Raider, and Medievil. Not really Zelda-ish games, but they still fit in the genre.

I can't be more thankful to any system for that. Giving my first kiss thanks to videogames is one of the nicest memories I have.
You have to be an edgelord or a dumb reclusive to hate the n64.

Yeah, the vibe around most of the N64 games is very light-hearted but amazingly fun at the core.

Japanese-only (A)RPGs, visual novels and adventure games, for example. It's best to know Japanese to enjoy them fully, but you could always just use an FAQ, and some might have English fan patches you could use on an emulator, for all I know. I have formal education in Japanese and I've lived in Japan, so I know more than enough Japanese to play vidya and only occasionally have to look up shit, and I'm happy with that. Some knobheads seem to think having to look up something quickly online or in an electronic dictionary completely ruins gameplay, but I'm fine with it as long as it only happens once in a while.

Also, that video only covers 100 out of the 1039 games that were released in Japan. Considering the US Saturn only had 247 games, and the PAL 240, there are about 8 times as many region exclusives not covered in that video.

As for collecting or just playing original games on original hardware, Japanese Saturn games are an order of magnitude cheaper than either the US or European counterparts. A lot of the games that will feature in a top 50 list will only be 3-5 dollars bought locally, and missing maybe only the obi but otherwise complete with manual, maps, inserts etc. Even stuff like Panzer Dragoon Saga is literally just around 30 bucks.

So the bottom line is, if you're going to collect your favorite games for the Saturn without breaking the bank, you should definitely go the Japanese route.

I had a PS1 before a N64. I only got the latter when Mario Party 3 was already out.

I prefer the N64, but the titles I played on PS1 are still good.

>> No.4171764

As a kid I had a 64, but I had plenty of exposure to the PSX thanks to it being fucking everywhere. My experiences in that gen honestly made me something of a Nintendo fanboy (with room for other consoles still) until the Wii left me obscenely disappointed. I couldn't stand the long ass load times for everything, the way the textures looked like they were having a seizure from simple camera movement, and how the genres I was into at the time (3D Platformers, FPS, arcade racers) just didn't stack up on PSX compared to the 64's offerings. It was only when I bought a Dreamcast that I gained a newfound interest in RPGs, something that the PSX had in spades which led me to finally buying one for myself. At that point I was a bit older and had more patience to sit through the load times, cutscenes, etc. while expanding my exposure to various titles and genres.

Lots of good shit on the PSX and it's easy to see how people would keep it as their main console, but I feel that the 64 has aged a fair bit better. The games are more pick-up-and-go, they're easier on the eyes (in a literal sense), and as mentioned it's still a damn fine party system.

I loved the N64 as a kid, while not giving much of a shit about the PS1 aside from FF7 and Crash. As I got older I got more repilled on what a truly mediocre system it was while the PS1 was like discovering a whole new world of creativity abound with its many games and shit. I can't even stand N64 graphics nowadays despite being able to put up with them a lot when I was younger.

I grew up with n64.

I don't like the generation at all. It's shit. Maybe the saturn is alright because it had more 2D games but I've never played it. I prefer 2D (especially genesis and SNES) and later 3D (PS2/Dreamcast/Gamecube). Early 3D aged like milk.

>> No.4171850

Had both, liked PS1 more, got rid of both, kept my PS2 and got a Saturn. Never liked N64 all that much, had 2-3 games I was interested in but thats it.

Not really, I see them as equals, both had great 1st party games and okay-mediocre 3rd party games. PS1 had great controllers and more of an edgy feel to it while the N64 felt more casual. I can't really binge play N64 (or most Nintendo games), it's more pick up whenever I feel like it and drop it for a few days or weeks (which was the way Nintendo intended it to be like) where as on Playstation 1, I wouldn't play anything else until I finished the game I was currently playing or got stuck. But yeah, if you wanna relax N64 destroys the PS1 but if you want to get knee deep in a good story driven game, PS1 is hands down the way to go.

I like the N64, but I still prefer my PS1 over the N64 for some reason.

>> No.4173673

N64 has always been way better for multiplayer. Almost nothing on ps1 also stacks up to Nintendo's best offerings

That said, some genres were almost entirely absent on the N64. The Tony Hawk games also had butchered soundtracks

>> No.4173684

The opposite actually, I found that there are a lot of amazing games on the PS1 than I had played because I didn't understand Japanese as a child, but that the N64 was an overrated piece of shit with only a few decent games and was really the beginning of the end for Nintendo as the leader of home consoles.

I was Arcade Master Race as a kid. I didn't give a fuck about consoles back then.

Nowadays I do prefer the N64 over the PS1 though. It didn't have as many games or as much variety, but I play it WAY more currently than PS1. I absolutely love the FPS selection on it and the wrestling games as much if not more so, plus there are a bunch of other cool exclusives and multi-platform releases as well.
