Sonic 2 is weird, and later has the hang glider part that doesn't function anything like you'd expect a hang glider to.
Sonic 1 for GG/SMS is fucking awesome though. Only Sonic game I truly love.

I had a GG a few years before I got a Genesis. I honestly wasnt aware that the two versions of Sonic 2 were totally different.
First time I played the 16-bit one my mind was blown the fuck apart. I then realized I actually really hated the GG one but only endured it because it was all I had.

I wouldn't say it SUCKS so much as Is Weird.
Just make sure you check out the sanic wiki or something before giving up on an area-- that's how I figured out the hang glider thing. It's rhythm based.
So sure, $6 isn't the worst price ever or anything.

The Chaos Emeralds are hidden in the Act 2 of every zone. Boss on Act 3 and there are no rings in the act at all so one-hit deaths.
Green Hill Zone Act 2 is SUPER retarded
Aqua Lake Act 2 again, is SUPER shitty.

A lot of the problems are because of the GG's smaller screen resolution though
