The very word "gamer" is absurd. It wasn't used on /vr/ times. Same with "casual" or "hardcore".

The other day me and a few of my friends were walking by some reseller scum shop and saw some shitstain numale with a manbun overpaying for shit. We walked in and started taking the piss out of everything. I picked up a copy of mario/duck hunt and pretended to be excited shouting to my friends "DUDE REMEMBER THIS GAME LOL" "NO WAY, THIS GAME WAS LIKE THE BEST FIGHTER ON GENESIS." Apparently the little faggot got massively triggered by being around games in a place that wasn't his moms basement and had other people in it. "Gamer" was more commonly used, but contrary to today, it wasn't a way to describe yourself, most of the times it was only a silly term that some game magazines used. Others used players (still used today, for example on PS4's slogan), and some other even sillier ones like "game maniacs" (which would be more similar to the word used in Japan, "mania" or "geemu mania", similar to Otaku), but "gamer" is the one that stuck and is used by today's newer generations as a way to describe yourself, that shit didn't exist back then.
As for "hardcore" and "casual", I remember hardcore being thrown around here and there in magazine reviews, sometimes, or stuff like "hardcore players" to refer to people who would get record high scores, but "casual" I honestly don't remember ever reading to refer to easier games, like it's done today.
What's more, "hardcore" was only used to refer to players, not games. Today, "hardcore" and "casual" is a way to define games.
Casual in particular is used by companies to sell mobile games and what not, and "hardcore" is used for advertising games.
