Previous Thread >>4122159

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Other than displays that need csync/puresync, one reason people go with it from what I've seen is compatibility. If one of your sources need csync and you are using sync on composite you will need a sync stripper which introduces a line delay thus the picture will be shifted to the left.

But it also allows people to get away using not fully shielded SCART cables as sync on composite can get interference from coupling.
>>4154153

Pretty much what should happen when you use fully shielded cables. Using sync on luma and csync allows people to get away with not using fully shielded cables, which if you use short runs you are usually pretty good.

In general make sure your csync is 75 ohms unless your device uses TTL sync. In the long run you can add a lot more wear and tear on the upscaler/device sometimes not even syncing/distortions.

Thanks, it was a lot of work getting this thing in here and set up comfortably and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Those speakers and the sub are both very well shielded btw. They offer no interference with the TV or my monitor. Unfortunately the sub doesn't actually work with the speakers on the TV since those are on the b channel of my receiver and the sub only outputs on the a channel which my PC is hooked up to. I'm still in the process of working that out without having to move speakers around whenever I use the TV.

What would be the PVM/TV to get if you were going to spend 150 on ebay? I assume that is what a good chunk of people here are doing since most free/cheap local TVs are going to be trash (or you have to travel far for it, or really hold out a long time for what you want)

Are they heavier than they look like they should be? That's generally a good sign. Another way to tell is to simply turn on a CRT without them near, then bring them close to it. Short term magnetic interference wont permanently harm a CRT but if you see any then you know they aren't. Also, if they're newer than early 2000's they very likely aren't as LCDs took over and magnetic shielding wasn't really need anymore.

WEGA's (pronounced VEGA) are the most common I find. They're the modern silver ones that are flatscreen. Pretty much any of those that are 27" and under should be enough for a moderately fit person to carry as they're 100lbs at 27". They tend to have some geometry issues such as bowing in the middle and at least one horrible corner but it's not always the case and you can fix some of that with the service menu. If you want a barrel tube then you gotta look for a black chassis and those are less common, at least in my area. If that's what you're after try holding out for an XBR, they're distinguished by the top button with a silver panel. XBR was/is the high end range of Sony TVs and the 90's pop up every now and then.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FD_Trinitron/WEGA#

This list has most of the details of any WEGA CRT you'll find. There's not nearly as much documentation for the black chassis 90's models unfortunately.

To everyone who helped me out last thread, especially on the VHS front: Thank you so much!

Today, I want looking around, and managed to come across a nice collection of 80's/90's anime VHS's, what I hope is a pretty good VCR, a 27 inch Toshiba CRT with component/RGB input, all for under $30 USD. I almost picked up an early model PS1 from a thrift shop, but I wanted to do some more research into the individual models.

If anyone is interested, I will post some pictures after I get this thing set up and tested out.

I don't want to make a thread about it since GCN isn't considered retro. But I know everyone has GCNs hooked up and /v/ won't know shit. Do you hook them into CRTS? Component cables are impossible to get ahold of, so off the bat it's composite. But then apparently flat CRTS (or HD crts?) are the only CRTS that can do 480p anyway. A lot of games are so beautiful on it I don't even know if CRTs do it justice.

I have a Wii U I can use for HD widescreen gamecube games, a U is still built of the wii which is built off GCN so I guess it isn't even emulation, but no clue if there is input lag (or if there is, how minuscule it is). I have seen weird HDMI modded gamecubes on ebay if anyone can tell me what the deal is with those.

The dreamcast is kind of in the same boat, I do VGA to HDMI and it looks so good, but the only way to achieve that is to have some a really odd monitor or screen that probably isn't even a CRT. So do people typically go for scart or VGA on whatever HD TV somehow?

TL;DR: What the fuck do people do for gamecube video quality? What TV do you use and what inputs?

I want a monitor I can easily connect to my gaming PC for emulation, something that requires thew least amount of converters/wires to get an image to it
Im going to be emulating PS1 games mostly what would be the best model/brand and what kind of video card would I need to buy?

>> No.4159429

>>4159401
It shouldn't matter too much. Cable quality starts to matter the longer the cable is--this is why you can use regular component cable at all. If you tried to use the cable used for component cables to connect an antenna from the to the third story of a building to the ground floor you'd start to see serious signal degradation.
As long as the adaptor makes good contact it should work OK. Higher quality gives you better construction that keeps the connector working for a longer time.

Also, be aware that many of the adaptors on sale have actually an impedance of 50 Ohm instead of the 75 Ohm used for video signals.

Hey /vr/, I have a chance to pick up a PVM-1943MD for $40 locally, but it has an issue where after a few hours of use the color gets fucked (pic related) and according to the seller you need to leave the monitor off for a good long time before it returns to normal.

Any clue what the issue could be and is there a fix or a ballpark estimate for what it might cost to have it repaired at a shop?

>> No.4159875

>Any clue what the issue could be
Could be heating of some components that need to have their thermal compound replaced. Could be capacitors that developed higher ESR over time. Could be cold solder joints that lose contact as the board undergoes thermal expansion. Only way to know for sure is to open it up and start testing.

People have done this with component, but I don't see why drilling holes is necessary for an RGB to RGB connection. What I would do is the easier and less damaging option, make a SNES to BNC cable and as long as the pins like up it should work fine. You'll also need a 75 ohm resistor I think? Would double check if you want to really do it. There are some premade versions of these but they're like $60 for some reason.

Also if SNES is your only console this might make sense to do, but I'd guess you might own more than one console if you're in this thread. Sticking with SCART would make more sense cause you could easily get a SCART switch and convert the one signal instead of getting a custom cable for each. If the PVM accepts YPbPr Component, I'd recommend HDRetrovisions Component cables, but once again that'd be for just if you have 2 or 3 consoles.

Anyway to actually answer your question, buy from either https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/ or retro_console_accessories on eBay. The eBay seller only has their items up in the morning (Morning in EST, I think from like 6-12).

The ones with DVD/Game switches (intended for PS2 obviously) are ALWAYS wired for RGB.

Perhaps your TV is/was designed to use the RGB switching voltage on one of the pins - I forget which - to change over automatically and this system failed in some way? Both are beautiful TVs and got them for 50 and 35 respectively with original remotes. Their scanlines are pretty small and hardly noticable, but the pictures are crisp. Hooking up SCART - Component on all the consoles I can is just cream on the cake.

My PAL tv can handle 60Hz, but when I set Wii to NTSC mode the whole image is red.

I understand this is because of some pins being switched between EU and US scart, but is there any way to fix it? Like some simple soldering and wiring?

And will Jap consoles like Famicom have this problem too?

If it takes 60hz it takes 60hz, if the picture's monochrome it's a pin out discrepancy, so yea you're going to have to open it up and do some rerouting. If I had to take a wild guess, your Wii's SCART's JP21, not EuroSCART. This should help.

>If I had to take a wild guess, your Wii's SCART's JP21, not EuroSCART
The cable is european and it works fine on PAL 60Hz. The problem starts when I launch NTSC rom or change region in boot menu, I guess it then changes output to JP21 mode.
It doesn't affect me that much right now, I just use PAL roms and vc/emulators work fine. I was interested if it would stop me from setting up Japanese consoles, but I see it's easy to fix.

you can also strip both s-video wires and put them into composite and it will also work

the picture will still be as shit as the input you use, but it would work, the difference between all those carriers is just how much they split up the signal for better bandwidth/quality

No silly.
SCART input just uses the composite input pin for sync signal when you use it for RGB.
It actually has a pin that tells it to switch to RGB, when that pin is "on" (or high/live) the normal composite input dosen't even work.

Almost every console RGB SCART cable I have or had used Luma for sync, it's the console side that gives the sync, nothing is stopping you from using composite for sync obviously, but nobody did that, they always used Luma from S-Video, because it gave better quality.

What do you even mean?
If a console has RGB, it usually also has a separate luma out. If you get one of those shitty cables that has sync on composite pin, it's just desoldering that one wire from the composite pin and putting it on the luma pin on the console side connector. If a console doesn't even have luma out, then you can't even use S-Video on it, so moot point in calling S-Video better than RGB w/ composite sync.

This isn't rocket science, lad.

mang, I live in scartland, and I can tell you, every OEM cable is wired with composite as sync. For a simple reason, it's for composite fallback, incase someone plugs it in scart port 2 that does not support RGB.

The only exceptions are RGB SMS and RGB MD1 that use MK3085 cable, because RGB SMS doesn't have a video encoder, and RGB MD1 is missing Y/C mixing components.

Unless the TV suffered physical damage, there is no need to open it up for calibration. Unless it's a older TV with only analog knobs for calibration, then mostly the fine tuning ones are hidden behind the back cover plastic.
Only way older TVs might need manually calibrating the magnets around the tube for example.

All CRT monitors are only limited by their vertical resolution, I don't know why but it is like that

Scaling all the weird resolutions games from that era ran at to the correct aspect ratio. This makes weird stuff like GBA games actually getting correctly scaled to 4:3 when those ran at 3:2

It's not really comparable to a consumer TV because the image is so crisp via VGA compared to S-Video, so it's more like an pseudo-PVM of sorts, but it looks way too good and it's versatile too if you want to watch movies on your PC.

Try getting a big monitor though, 17 inches or more, you'll regret it if it's smaller. For example, a 13 inch monitor gets up to 1024x768@60hz while this one, a 17 inch one, gets to 1440x1080@60hz

Bought this small tv for 5. Use it mostly for kodi and psx emulation with my pi2. Ignore the coleco and newegg box its sitting on top of. I just moved recently.

A little off topic but:
Should I bother getting a pi3? I used the pi2 as a desktop when my main PC was down and it was pretty fucking awful. Browser locking up, youtube barely working or reg vids playing even with omxplayer. Does it perform any better? Like I said I mostly use it for psx and only one or two games have ever ran slowly.

No good VGA cable does that, every signals own ground is in it's own coaxial cables shield and the outer shield around all the coaxial cables is only connected on one side.
Obviously shitty cables exist.

>I'd like to understand more on this topic.
The topic is ground loops. Plus the fact that some chips provide their own ground that is not meant to be joined together with common ground. It's not good to just smash all grounds into one everywhere.

That wasn't a very definitive example I did with the 1,2,3,4,5 etc.
For SCART you would use every colors own coaxial cables shield as it's own colors ground in RGB, the outermost shield around all those cables though you'd only connect to one side to the metal part of the connector. Then you could use one of the leftover wires either for mono sound or RGB switching line.

For VGA you'd do >>4178681, VGA 5 way coaxial cables usually have R,G,B,HSync,VSync plus a normal coated wire for ground, sometimes some data wires too, then you'd use the coated ground wire for both sides ground pin and the outermost shield that's around all wires connects to one side of the VGA connectors metal part.

I can carry a 20 inch consumer, or p/bvm no problem. But once they start getting bigger than that there's only so much I can carry before the tv starts getting to be bigger than me!

Exactly, and proper handles make a MASSIVE difference.

I can lug 20" BVMs up and down stairs all day long. 27" Profeel is getting difficult but still doable. My PVM-2950 weighs as much as I do but I can move it. However a 25" consumer set, despite being far lighter, defeats me as the weight is horribly unbalanced and there's simply no way to get a decent grip on it.

why are all of the WEGAs that I find on Craigslist 32" and above? I just want a nice medium size one that I can actually carry up the steps

I love random cheap CRTs, they produce some of the most interesting images.

I found this 13 Inch Durabrand TV in my alley, single mono composite input on the front, and that's it. Been using it as my SNES monitor for a week or so now, the bright, colorful, but fuzzy image is super nostalgic for me; in a way my PVM can't match.

You only fucked up if you overpaid for a PVM without RGB support. Should be good for any consoles or retro computers that have either composite or s-video as highest quality output natively.
