Anyone else tired of companies releasing definitive versions of retro classics on handhelds?

>> No.4156775

Not really. The fact is that old Sega game ports were selling on the 3DS and M2 figured they could take the opportunity to make great games even better. They should release these versions on Steam but until Sega sees the light I'm just grateful they exist. I have some incredible ports of Hang-On and Out Run.

I'm probably a little biased because I really think 3D improves those classic raster racers

Steam SoR2 has a steam workshop which allows for rom hacks - so it's superior

No, the opposite! I want more more more of them. M2's 3D Genesis games were the best, but I love any solid port to a handheld system.

>"definitive"

Indeed. At least, if we're referring to "remasters," "enhanced" ports or other such cheap cash-ins. This stuff is constantly shilled on /v/ as the "definitive" version of said game, even though these releases often involve totally different physics engines, have a ton of bugs, or the gameplay mechanics are in fact watered down.

What are some of the worst examples of this?

Salty little cuck's mad his precious retro consoles are losing more exclusives.

>cheap cash-ins
The M2 3D ports had a lot and care and love put into them. Hardly cheap cash-ins.

This, we needed more.
Nintendo really wasted a huge opportunity with the 3DS, we only got a few 3D remakes like Kid Icarus, Kirby, but where's SMB3? that game would look gorgeous on 3D.

Nintendo thought it would be fairly simple to make the games look good in 3D but quickly realized how hard it was to make it look good and that's why they stopped. It is a shame though, the few they released were great. Kirby 3D is really charming.

M2 perfected it though, all theirs looked incredible. This is actually one of my favorite uses of the 3D effect on the system. It brings old games to life in a whole new way. It's the only way I play Ecco now.

Don't hold your breath, he's not going to come back and post any real problem with an M2 port.

They did pretty good work with Ghosts n Goblins and Revenge of Shinobi on PSN/XBLA too.

they're the FF sequels that should have been, shame they didn't have the license but that takes nothing from the games

Not really. Most '90s beat 'em ups (especially from Capcom like AvP) improved on the FF formula bigly. Meanwhile SoR games were just kinda there, they didn't really help evolve the genre in a meaningful way, and just get overrated by Segatards because that was their only relevant beat 'em up at the time, well, besides Golden Axe, but that too was outdone by the likes of KoD, D&D, etc.

you're comparing arcade games to console games. Having 4 playable large sprite characters is damn impressive for the time.

I am fine knowing that new generations of kids will enjoy the games I enjoyed. Their experience with the games are unique to them, as mine was different. I don't need to see Frog take the Masamune to slice open a mountain in animated form then watch the same thing happen again with the in-game sprites, that was not how I remember the game, but those extra dungeons are unique to their experience and was not part of mine. I remember leaving Luna behind, whereas that's not how the story goes for everyone else. I did not know Mustadio had a thing for Agrias, not how it went for me in my day. I never got to experience that Cecil and Rosa had kids that had their own adventures, it was just up to my imagination. I am at peace with my fond memories, even when they are not definitive. Good for the kids.

I did recently get a PSP, but I no longer have the time as I once did to enjoy these games now.
