It's not the structural strength that was the problem so much as the electrical hazard from all the mains-referenced wiring that has to extend across the chassis to all the switches. It's exposed to all sorts of thermal expansion heating and cooling sandwiched between a computer and monitor, and rough handling from yanking it around to get at cables or just plunking a heavy CRT on it. One wire frays or a crimp works itself loose and the suddenly whole chassis is live.

You asked why they don't make them like that anymore and I jokingly answered that there was no demand for a surge protector that you can sandwich between a monitor and the computer.

IDK which ones you've been examining but mine has a thick sheet of electrical insulation between the case and the wiring (at least on the bottom, can't remember the sides/top). It's not blind luck that it's lasted 23 years.

>> No.4147260

>You asked why they don't make them like that anymore

You have me confused for someone else. I flatly stated they don't make them that way anymore for a reason.

>mine has a thick sheet of electrical insulation between the case and the wiring

That's no guarantee of safety with that design. Thanks to the lengths of the cables if one gets loose it can go anywhere and touch anything in normal handling. Touching the chassis is only one of several dangers. Shorts at the switches themselves, fires, etc...

>It's not blind luck that it's lasted 23 years.

I expect the majority of them have had no issues. It's not like they intentionally built them to be death traps. But shit did happen and they decided they weren't safe enough. They got pretty expensive secondhand because they were still very popular after they stopped making them.

Modern example: The vast majority of Samsung Note 7s have not and probably won't explode, but you saw how that all went down.

Thank you for explaining further, it would seem we're in concordance. I personally feel really lucky to have gotten one when helping my then-girlfriend's dad clean out his father's house 10 years ago. I did make sure to take it apart, clean and examine the innards first. Checked recently and everything is still in good condition, even the caps which is impressive because I don't have anything that's lasted that long with daily usage.

Ironically, the only time I've had a surge protector go bad was 5 years ago an $80 one melted to a desk when the nearest transformer blew.
