>>410695
Simple marketing. You want your wares to be more expensive than the competition's in high income markets to give an illusion of it being a more premium item and thus more desirable to the consumer. In lower income markets you naturally go cheaper than your competition in order to make it more viable to a larger number of consumers, since there's not as much money going around.

>> No.410776

>>410629
That was probably suggested by someone somewhere. But I figure in the end they probably pushed "latest technology!" "full motion video!"

>>410640
Yes, but Europe had the same form factor as Japan which has a smaller cartridge slot.

>>410695 >>410736
The MD/Genesis was also on the out for two years by the time the SFC/SNES arrived in its respective markets. Remember the "Genesis does what Nintendon't" campaign pitted the it against the NES. So the system price probably came down due to age, and to make it more appealing against the SNES; by that time they could afford to make less on each sale.

That sounds like fun. But I guess the weed and coke was needed, sine Atari machines, even after the 2600, had to rely on using timed interrupts to render anything onscreen. Compared to what the NES was capable of doing, this was archaic and very tedious.

Still, they also had to deal with assembly language moreso than modern programmers could ever care for.

Well my uncle said a lot of it was based on unreasonable deadlines handed down by Ray Kassar.

A game is only half done and you're expected to have it ready to be burned into rom chips in 3 days? Time for a few programmers to have a bag of coke and sit at their computers for a 72hr coding session.

Tech info time!

The 2600 has no VRAM at all and your code loop has to redraw the background graphics every frame on top of performing all game logic. This takes place during the vertical retrace and you have about 70 clock cycles to do it. Thus 2600 coding is extremely timing-sensitive.

NES is a little bit similar in that you cannot modify the VRAM or PPU registers except during the retrace

I've never actually asked him for a complete list. He wasn't there for a long time, it was basically a stepping-stone job. He and my father worked for a company that fabricated boards for Atari and other companies at the time, and that's how he ended up working for Atari for a bit. It was also through working together at that fabrication company that my father met my uncles little sister, my mother.

Simple. LJN was a toy company at first. And then Universal decided to buy LJN and they sorta merged. It was around this time when LJN started to produce games. Gotcha was actually based on the movie "Gotcha", which was turned into the toy gun line. Additionally. LJN never developed games in-house, they outsourced their early stuff to the Japanese and later to random American and British teams.

Rare and Atlus made games for LJN.

The guy who programmed the Atari computer Donkey Kong wrote a nice essay about his tenure there and he said it was a fun place to work at until shit started going down during mid-1983.

On 6502 machines, you essentially always program in straight assembly since that CPU doesn't lend itself well to HLLs

Yeah I hear a lot of the downfall blamed on Ray Kassar because he was just an out of touch business guy that didn't actually give a shit about games or keeping his programmers happy.

The stories I've heard include the guy having a hired limo take him to/from work every day, and using a lot of company money to have 5-star chefs deliver his lunch.

In fact, Atari employees that ended up staying there through the decline apparently referred to employees who were smart enough to sell their stock and leave earlier on as the "millionaires club"

What happened was that Nolan Bushnell sold Atari to Warner Communications in 1978 and they attempted to market video games like movies and TV. While this is fine today, Warner was too ahead of their time and it couldn't work at that early phase.

Even worse, after NB left, all engineering innovation ceased. First they had the 2600, then the computers, and then...nothing.
