I have a dreamcast that is treating me very badly. It will play any number of scratched NBA or NFL 2k games. It boots CDs just fine. However when it comes to playing anything decent such as Sonic Adventure or Shenmue in non-scratched conditions it refuses to read the discs.
I've spent hours doing the laser calibration trick with no luck.

Any other suggestions to try out to fix this DC? It's like living with a shitty chad room mate who only wants to play madden all day.

Maybe you need to adjust the laser POT, this happened a lot with an old gamecube that had a modchip installed. After playing burned games it refused to read the original games for a couple hours.

>POTenciometer.
Its a piece that you can move or adjust using a screwdriver, It defines the strength of the laser when reading the disc. Check the link, its not hard but do it carefully.

Dreamcasts are one of the most faulty consoles out there.

Fixing the pots is only a temporary fix. You'll need to buy a new GD-ROM drive.

potenciometer, a variable resistor. Pretty much every dial you can turn is in essence one of those, the tuner on a radio, volume control etc.

All disc-based consoles will inevitably stop reading discs sooner or later.

Game Gear for sure. Don't think I've ever seen a single one which either doesn't require recapping or hasn't already been.

On the flipside my Nov 2000 PS2 has never skipped a beat in nearly 17 years now.

just buy another dreamcast they arent expensive or rare.

I alternate between 2 different ones because they stop reading discs after a few hours if play.

The early PS2s are built much better. The 5000x models (built around 2003) are notorious for breaking down and not reading discs.
