>Saturn that I bought in 1997

>PS1 that I bought in 1996, before the other 2 systems
Stopped working a long time ago, not even the upside down trick works anymore

Are PS1 really that finicky, or I was just unlucky?

Stupid burgers don't know how to take care of their electronics, so it's probably a combination of poor manufacturing and neglect.

Me and a cousin both receive the first model for Christmas 1996, a year later his console had problem reading games meanwhile my console was perfectly fine, he had to use your pic related for games to read, around 2001 his mom sold it to buy a PS2, before that happen i remember that they have to change the laser at least two times, meanwhile my PS was still kicking like new until 2005 when it stopped reading and had to change the laser.
So yea maybe you are unlucky.

I don't know, my 1001 ps1 still works (I did a drive swap so that discs would work better) But a used Saturn I bought half a year ago stopped working months ago

Tell me about it. I lost count of how many times my PSX had to be repaired, it only stopped when I started playing less after I got a PS2, which by the way only failed once. My other consoles never ever had problems, even the ones that are older than the PSX.

N64 is an entirely solid state machine so it should be durable as fuck.

As for Saturn, this was $399 for a mid-90s consumer electronic. Sega didn't fuck around with build quality for it. Back then they manufacture that shit on mainland China.

Early PS1s did have some issues with the way heat affected the drive mechanism and it exacerbated them if people played with them sitting on carpet, blankets or anything not a hard flat surface since most of the vents are on the bottom.

It did usually remedy both of these problems to flip 'em because the drive mechanism was no longer resting unevenly on slightly melted feet and it also let them breathe better plus replacement drop in whole drive assemblies have always been relatively cheap

Found your problem. The first produced models were infamous because of how quickly they became unplayable. It's kind of comparable to how early NES and Xbox 360 consoles broke compared to other consoles of its generation.
Just get another one if you feel like it, they should still be easy to find.

I remember there were issues with chipped psx, for once there were no voltage limiters so when laser couldnt read something it would increase voltage to the laser itself with time causing lens to become misty.
I think it was the case with all playstation consoles.

Apart from that psx, ps2, ps3 and undoubtedly ps4 are very shortlived consoles.
They just drop like flies.

>> No.4147057

With N64 I can understand because carts/no moving parts.
But with Saturn... how did they do it? These things are durable as fuck.
Or maybe Sony got me used to short-lived products.

Sony has moved the laser to the right in the latter model.
It solves this problem.

Are Saturn lasers good?
To be honest most laser based consoles make me not want to buy them
I know sony ones are shitty, as most of my friends playstation are dead by now, even their xbox, I wonder about stuff like dreamcast and some addons ones

My old N64 started overheating and resetting all the time, I had to put something under it to increase the air flow.
I also had to change the laser on my game cube, but my old PS1 works just fine.

I guess it just depends.

>> No.4147418

I've owned two Saturns in my life. The disk reader of the first one died around 2007, got a replacement since

both suffered from the same issue though, after a while the battery save feature just stopped working. Even if I put in a fresh battery and don't use it for a while, like a month later, I'll turn it on and be greeted by the date/time screen.

It's not really a problem, I have a memory cart, just a minor annoyance at best.

>> No.4147457

>>4147412
Never heard of anyone having that kind of issue.... N64 resetting due to overheat? Weird.

>> No.4147462

>>4147418
Yeah the Saturn's internal memory dying is a common "issue", which isn't really an issue, just something normal, batteries die. That's why you can easily change them without even needing to open the console case.

It happened a few years ago. Some googling led me to this forum post:
https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/124745/why-does-my-nintendo-64-randomly-reset
If you scroll down a bit, you'll see the image I posted. A guy just solved the problem by putting some supports under it.
That's the same thing I did and it fixed the issue.

If you're going to play Playstation games without buying the original discs you might as well use something like PSIO or a PS2 with a hard drive instead of resorting to CD-Rs.

>> No.4147672

>>4147665
You can only play PlayStation games from a PS2's hard drive using POPS emulation which is shit.

PSIO has incomplete compatibility and is both expensive and all but impossible to get hold of.

You're really better off buying a (good revision) PlayStation or full-on emulating.
