ITT: Games that killed a franchise

You mean Link to the Past.

Zelda should've stuck to the AOL formula instead of going back to the first game. Being able to jump at will was fun as fuck, and the game was actually challenging both from a gameplay and puzzle aspect.

Explain why you think this about Ocarina Of Time.

>> No.4142507

Zelda should have stayed in 2D.
Ocarina Of Time fucking ruined everything. It was easy as hell, it holds your hand, and it made Zelda into a linear mess that was more about hack and slash action and cinematic cutscenes than it was about puzzle solving, gameplay, and exploration. Every console Zelda game after it, except for Breath Of The Wild has emulated this style. They all feel like Ocarina Of Time, whereas the first four Zelda games all feel original and unique. Even Ocarina Of Time itself feels like a soft remake of A Link To The Past.
Classic Zelda is the best Zelda.

Are the puzzles and dungeon designs *really* that good in BotW, though...?

>> No.4142515

>>4142507
This. Also, it put classic style 2D Zelda games on the back burner. They're pretty much only released on handhelds. It put the gameplay style that started everything on the fucking back burner. I'm sick of hearing kids (and young adults) calling themselves "Zelda fans" when they've only played the 3D games, and won't touch classic Zelda.

>> No.4142516

>>4142514
No, but it has a greater focus on exploration and non linearity, which I can respect.

>> No.4142526

OP is right. A formula was born with Ocarina. I don't think Nintendo were trying to do anything like that, but they did. It's sort of like when people say that Star Wars "killed cinema" by becoming a blockbuster hit and selling a ton of action figures, inspiring nearly every movie that came after it to be a safe, formulaic, two hour long toy commercial. Ocarina Of Time caused nearly every subsequent Zelda game to be a formulaic chore to play.

>You mean Link to the Past.

I actually agree with you. I don't necessarily think they needed to stick to the Zelda 2 formula (though that would have been fine) but the problem with Zelda 3 is that the first two games were really perilous and you had to take them seriously all the time. Every upgrade you found, no matter how minor, gave the odds a much-needed push in your favor. For all the cool treasures aLttP has, I have a hard time caring about any of them, because I'm going to effortlessly stomp its easymode enemies either way.

One of the most popular games on its console, killing its franchise. Not sure if underage summer or the usual seeker of (YOU)s.

>it made Zelda into a linear mess
Yeah, let's conveniently forget that almost every Zelda before it did the exact same thing, maybe except for Zelda 1. What makes it even better is that you're contradicting yourself
> ... feels like a soft remake of Link to the Past
Yeah, it's not like it introduced several elements itself like the different races, horseriding, first person aiming and the targeting system. Nope, it's just Link to the Past.

>>Ocarina Of Time caused nearly every subsequent Zelda game to be a formulaic chore to play.
Have you even played any other Zelda game? Most Zelda games follow the exact same tropes the first game introduced. Hell, even the newest one still does that so by that logic you might as well disregard every Zelda game in existence because they all follow the same formula.

6/10, OP. You made me reply in this bait thread.

All zeldas before OoT are basically the same game (except for zelda 2). Stop being so buttmad over it, OoT hit where the others would never be able to.

He does have a point. Except for Zelda 2 every Zelda game was a top down with the same kind of combat, same way to use weapons ... the gameplay of LoZ, LttP and LA are very alike (those from the oracle games as well if I may add them) from a gameplay point of view. If anything it's Zelda 2 that would be the biggest influence on Ocarina of Time and later 3D Zeldas because of the bigger focus on combat skills.

Not saying that to diss on the top down gameplay, mind you. I like them but even if that other poster put it a little too bluntly he still had a point. Being different from that is nothing short of refreshing for a Zelda game. It's one of the reasons why I like Zelda 2 and OoT so much after all.

>> No.4144009

Ocarina Of Time "didn't kill the franchise," but Ocarina Of Time babies who ignore 2D Zelda games all together, and act like it was the first "real" or "proper" Zelda are the fucking worst. Those people arguably ruined the franchise.
