Is this a fair assesment of Chrono Trigger?

http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1spsblb

>At its heart, Chrono Trigger is a boring piece of shit, dressed up by layer after layer of visual polish and what I like to call "setpiece" presentation. When you strip away CT's (admittedly stellar) surface level presentation elements, you're left with a shallow husk of a game

*sigh*
One of the best games from the greatest gaming generation as explained by someone who never played because it wasn't cool or hip or swag or nerd-chic or......fuck i dunno, swavy or some other bs buzz word people throw around too much

This. When CT came out, people didn't play it to be cool or whatever the fuck they claim now. Where do people get these ideas from?

I don't think the game is the second coming of christ like /v/ does but this already screams contrarian.
>shitting on hollow knight
>then proceeds to reccomend anime loli dungeon crawler for the Vita #546251 if you want good gameplay
Fuck off with this OP.

Forgot to add my 2 cents regarding OP's question:
I don't entirely disagree. "Boring piece of shit" is hyperbole but the game definitley does try to make up for its gameplay shortcomings with its presentation. It was a shallow JRPG for its day for sure.

It's an enjoyable game with great music and nice visuals that still holds up to this day. It's made for anyone to pick up and play with not much of a learning curve.

I get why some people wouldn't like it, but most people who grasp at straws just to shit on this game are being contrarians just for the sake of it.

It's one of the best game of the SNES, and the lack of it on the SNES Mini is gonna send the cartdrige prices up the roof and every sucker who buys a mini SNES (and knows about the actually SNES library) will blog and complain about that.

- What is the game's ruleset?
- Does it stick to those rules?
- Does the gameplay surprise you?
- What is the challenge?
- Can you prepare before the challenge?
- Can you deal with the challenge in multiple ways within the system?

The answer to most of those questions is no, but see if you can poke holes in that argument.

And let's look at it from a story perspective.

- Is it thought provoking?
- Is it revelatory?
- Does it contribute to the betterment of society?
- Does it make you re-examine your assumptions?
- Does it dictate?
- Does it encourage misinterpretation?

confirmed for contrarian weeb that watches anime because nobody else in his real life does so he can double down on being lonely

Yes, all games of today are just poor mechanically with a sheen of aesthetic, of set-pieces. they are inferior to the robust titles offered in the arcade age of 1980 (and also to Tetris) that offered an unlimitless skillcap

The people who shit on Chrono Trigger for being shallow are the people who also praise FF4 and 6 for being master peices, despite being just as shallow as Chrono Trigger.

CT is great because it's casual, beautiful, has a fun and interesting story, and is an overall great experience without over staying it's welcome.

Everything about Chrono Trigger is great except it's shallow, easy, combat, but unfortunately like half the game is combat and another fourth is preparation for combat.

Alright, challenge accepted.
-You have to complete the game while the game itself tries to stop you.
-Yes, yes it does.
-Time travel done in an interesting way for one. Team attacks. Never saw it before, haven't seen it since, except the Disgaea series. No random battles was sweet.
-Depends on the age of the player. But It's an RPG sooooo traverse the world, grinding levels and looking for hidden items, characters and abilities.
-Yup, save points everywhere you need em. Sorry, no autosave in this generation. Checkpoints, but this is an rpg, not an action game.
-Yup. Depends on levels, which characters you have/don't have(Mainly Chrono and Magus) It's possible to beat the game(from about halfway) without the main character. It's not a linear game by any means. 26 endings!!! and one of them can be done within the first hour and a half if you're good enough

NEXT!!

Story, eh? Alright, I'll bite.

-Made me think about history as a whole and our place in time. How my, and others actions, can affect the future.
-After looking through history books and whatnot, it's made realize that people haven't really changed in the past 8000 years or so.
-If it makes people think about their actions, if it makes kids respect their parents more, if it makes people diligent in how they accomplish tasks, then yes.
-Assuming everything was the same for everybody was a foolish mistake 9 year old me never made again.
-It dictates what can happen if arrogance is allowed to rule for too long. First the Saurians, then the Magi, then the Mystics, then the Future people, all lost to the threads of time and fate.
-It's a videogame; so yes. Whether or not it MEANS to is debatable.

There.

I honestly agree. Chrono Trigger was one of my favorite games as a kid, but when I played it again recently I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the generic plot and flat characterization. The only things it really has going for it is presentation and nostalgia.
