Are any of the Hardcore Gaming 101 books worth reading?

They seem like re-packaged material from the website, but I might be wrong.

I never read the books, but there's nothing in their reviews you couldn't figure out yourself just by loading up a rom and playing for 15 minutes.

Are the Boss Fight Books any good? They're pretty modern, and seem to be filled with information and research. My question is what are they basing this research on?

That was not HG101 themselves, but one of their editors. And it looks like the guy was outright schizo. I even heard a rumor that he's nowhere to be found and might be homeless now.

Which is a shame, since the project is a great concept. People write shitty blogs and posts about this or that, but few actually do the research and interview old devs.

SJW bullshit is at the core of it all, plain and simple
in the outskirts of that shit parade, there's their growth which started around what, the beginning of this decade? and quality started going down too, with SJW crap slowly creeping in as it became more fashionable to talk shit about politics in any context, and they still dont proofread or edit their articles before publishing. I remember when they started talking about money and donations, it was to pay people to write more content for the website, but it's hit or miss as far as my experience tells me. Now 10 years ago? That's the HG101 I like to remember.

The owner started shoehorning his political ideologies into articles about 8-bit hop-and-bops. The other writers followed suit.

Not that any of the articles were ever well written in the first place.

I still read HG101 and I don't think it's THAT bad. There's some politics stuff in the articles sometimes yeah, but it's nothing excessive, and it's still a cool place to discover unknown or niche games, although obviously the quality of the articles depends on the contributor.

>> No.4134150

You're right, it's not world shatteringly horrible or anything close to it. I'm all for injecting some personality into reviews and stuff, always better than being dry and lifeless, but it's just noticeable and, imho, grating enough that it feels like an honest misstep. But yea, to their credit it's not pervasive and the reviews are still about the games, but their reviews are a whole other can of worms, they should have better standards for writers, we got newfags here who can do better than some of them

Same. It was nice for discovering games back then, seeing all the different versions of a game with a slew of screenshots and nothing really lengthy. They kept it simple. Just compare the old and new.
