Does this comic properly represent the hobby of retro gaming?

>> No.4131513

Maybe as a modern thing, I guess? Though, I think money was a bigger driving force, both in the realm of investors and YouTubers.

>> No.4131517

it properly represents literally any hobby
women/normalfags will ruin absolutely anything

>> No.4131518

No. The only real con of more widespread interest in retrogaming is the increase of prices. None of this shit really applies because retro gaming is a bit too nebulous to have the type of community corruption this image describes. It'd be like getting upset because Chad started reading books to impress a girl who also reads.

>> No.4131530

>>4131518
To add to this, I do believe this applies to modern gaming since the market will appeal to the normalfag/secondary market more and more and will affect the types of games that come out. Retro games are static and there is no centralized community.

the image in the op only applies to evolving hobbies, where new editions/additions still appear and there is new stuff to be dumbed down.

No, it doesn't. Nothing's stopping you from locking yourself in your room and playing AES games and shitposting about it on /vr/ with other autists. You never have to encounter a single hipster or normalfag.

Technically you could make the same argument about modern games too - you don't HAVE to keep up with all the e-celeb garbage, play with normies, etc - but since the normie culture around modern gaming affects what kind of games get made, the tone of the biggest game conventions, etc, people have more of a reason to be upset.

That pic is bullshit in this case. Retro games weren't a fucking guild started by two loser ass neckbeards on an MMO with nothing better to do, they were mass produced by corporations for purchase. There was no fucking "community". If anything, the only downside to the community growing is price increases. Thanks to the community growing, we've guaranteed that these games won't be forgotten and lost in time thanks to how popular emulation development has gotten, not to mention ROMhacking communities and such.

>> No.4131850

I don't care about what others think, I still play my old consoles and games and enjoy them the same way I did as a kid.
In a way, I'm kind of grateful that the internet wasn't a mainstream thing when I was a kid, I got to experience vidya in a sort of "pure" state, not many external influences outside of magazines, and talking to other kids or friends about video games, but that was awesome. I didn't get to actually interact with other people online (and saw stuff like console warriors) until later on, years 2000 or 2001.

It's only natural that people desire to preserve things that they see meaning in. Why do you think libraries and museums are made? How? I see meaning in them because I grew up in those times, with them around, and they are linked to an specific period of history I happened to be a part of. Different people can see different things, but my meaning is linked to me and only me. Therefore other people playing them is irrelevant.

After I'm dead, they can destroy all the copies of my favourite game for what I care.

Retro gaming is less reliant on the community, this is more representative of /tg/ communities but the easy solution is to be both a hardcore nerd and a dudebro from the beginning. It may have been necessary to have come of age in the 90s for this to be possible

Speaking as someone who came of age in the early 80's, I'd disagree. I love both /tg/ and /vr/, those are two of my favorite boards. Granted, the pic doesn't really cover /vr/ in the way OP is thinking. I can't tell you how many times someone has come up to me and parroted whatever they heard some YouTuber saying about it. For example, someone once told me that Ecco the Dolphin was a boring and uninspired game and that the soundtrack sucks. After talking with them a bit about it, I found out that the 17 year old in question had never actually played it and they had only watched some YouTubers.
/tg/ stuff on the other hand, this is completely correct. Can't tell you how many times I've had someone bring someone else to a game and I've told them they are never allowed to bring that person back and that they can't invite people into my house randomly.

>> No.4132020

>>4131997
>It may have been necessary to have come of age in the 90s for this to be possible

Or 80's. This attitude that games are for "nerds" and "dudebros" are an outside invading force is relatively new and probably mostly based on TV tropes.

In the 70's, 80's and 90's it wasn't unusual in any way for someone to be into both video games and sports.

Tabletop games less so, but even then it wasn't unheard of and girls, while uncommon certainly weren't unheard of and I never saw a group or campaign implode because of them. I'm pretty sure the comic in OP's post was always meant to be satirical though.

To be fair, Ecco is one of my favorite games of all time and I've been recommending it for years and years. I know many people I otherwise respect and like who formed that opinion on their own.

>> No.4132053

I don't think this describes retro gaming per se, but it does kind of apply to the history of video gaming in general. The Dude Bros are definitely personified by the PlayStation userbase once the PS1 became popular. That's probably because you were still young. Video games were never really a niche game for nerds. The guy who taught me about emulators in the 90's is a sports writer now. Many of my friends from back then were into both kinds of games.

The notion that video games were ever a niche nerd was mostly made up by TV in the first place.

That's entirely fine, actually. I know I just said preservation is important, but we don't all have to do that. As long as at least one person is doing it, that's all that matters. The rest of us can enjoy things in the moment while we have them.

I should give a frame of reference here. I'm relatively younger than some posters on this board, only 24. I did not have the Atari 2600, or the NES, or anything like that. But I can go back to those games now and see them for myself, enjoy them just like others did back then. I'm very grateful that I can do that, and that's why I see value in preservation.

Games are things that bring people joy, and we live in a world where even old games can still do that, even with newer ones on the market. That makes me happy, and I'd be sad to see these disappear forever.
