It's only so bad when they attempt to emulate (or god forbid, directly port) Japanese games with some exceedingly rare exceptions. Just about every Euro mascot or licensed game especially from /vr/ days is god fucking awful.

That said, they also gave us Rare, Factor 5, Codemasters, Llamasoft, Rockstar/DMA, and pic related also gave us Worms... but yeah, these were games made on the cheap from hobbyists or semi-pros at best with piracy all but guaranteed. It's amazing that good stuff saw the light of day at all.

It sucks that the original version didn't have a password system (unlike the later Gameboy Color one) but it had some interesting levels and the music was pretty good for a licensed game. I wouldn't put it on the same pedestal as Wario Land or Link's Awakening but it's still a great Gameboy game to me.

Yes, Europeans are terrible at making games

>> No.4127534

The problem is most European games were developed for home computers. This meant a lot of the best games were either a) unsuitable for consoles due to their controls (usually joystick and keyboard, then later mouse) and b) idiosyncratic and odd as fuck. This meant few of them left their country of origin.

The lack of general interest in consoles also meant there was a poor understanding of genres the Japanese were running rampant with, so must european platformers - and especially shoot em ups - are just terrible. Even worse the players themselves didn't have the context of console games to realise how shit most of the home brewed were so to this day big up absolute turds they loved when they were 7 because they didn't know better.

What the fuck are you talking about?
It's usually the european developers who push the hardware to its limits. Think about Factor 5, Velez & Dubail Dev Team, Shin'en, DICE (but I don't care much about Rare btw). Most of them started on the C64 and Amiga and later switched (for whatever reason) mostly to the Nintendo Platform. Obviously their experience with the home computers was a school of hard knocks.

Well DICE is a chapter of it's own. I fucking loved the earliest DICE games. Their Pinball series (Pinball Dream/Fantasies/Illusions) is a instant classic and was groundbreaking. Most games of that genre did follow the DICE formula since then (Pinball Mania, Pinball World, Slamtilt etc). Benefactor was also fucking awesome. But I don't like their later and especially recent games at all. Those racing games looked boring and Battlefield is a waste of time (the gaming equivalent of big-budget-garbage á la Michael Bay), while they still have an unreleased and almost finished 16-bit gem up their sleeve. "Hardcore" (Amiga and MegaDrive) despite being a obvious Turrican-Clone looked much more promising than those annual Battlefield/Battlefront crap.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD_oFVeYZYo

And Velez & Dubail Dev Team did things with the Gameboy and GBA, that even Nintendo themselves never accomplished. Hell, Factor 5 afaik were involved in the development of the GameCube somehow.

the Euro side of things was much more focused on shit like the Amstrad CPC, ZX-Spectrum and Amiga. Even the C=64 was a bigger presence there than the states.

All they can do is chase after the fame they got from Worms:Armageddon game by making more and more gimmicky Worms games that stray away from original concept as far as they can. Factor 5's separation from Nintendo didn't worked well. And the release of "Lair" around the Launch of the PS3 was disastrous and pretty much caused the bankruptcy of their US branch. Of course the closure of their publisher caused this too. But it looks like they reopened at least their german company in February 2017 again and are slowly starting business again. I think I heard they were recollecting their old licenses/IPs (Turrican and the Rainbow Arts games) until now.

About Silvia Schmidt... I don't know what she's doing now.
