Shadows of the Empire

2D games were honestly never immersive enough to really scare me, but with the 5th gen I got to play some truly frightening games. SotE was the first to really get to me. The Wampas, the tense fight with IG-88, exploring the sewers, the game is full of terrifying moments. The game also controls kind of clumsily so it has a sort of survival horror feel, especially on the harder difficulties.

I can't recall the name of the game, but I remember playing it when I was about three. It was on the NES, and took place inside of a mansion or large house of some kind. When you entered a room in the house, it changed to a first person view, and you had to find stuff in the rooms.

Thing is, when you checked certain doors, monsters would sometimes pop out, and would chase you after you were forced out of the room. One of them was a blue skeletal gorilla or something, and that was the one that spooked me. I don't remember much else about the game, other than it being really hard.

Shadowgate was another one that I thought was kind of scary when I was a kid. I was five when I first played that one. There were so many ways to die in that game, and I probably found most of them. The music and atmosphere were unsettling, and you had to keep an eye on your torches, as well. Once they go out, you're screwed.

At least I didn't play Uninvited when I was five.

Didn't scare me enough to run out of the room or have nightmares or anything, but I was like 4-5 and a bunch of bloody 3D zombies freaked me out.

I've always wondered what it was. I think it was a lightgun game and it was the mid-90's.
First game I PLAYED that scared me was Mega Man X. I have a crippling fear of bees that was even worse as a child, so when the giant bee gunship flew down in the first stage I had to turn off my SNES and compose myself for a while before I went back in and toughed it out.

my 6 year old self was NOT READY FOR THIS.
This was like my 2nd PC game. The first being like a shitty jumpstart education.

Just the idea that that was a human prisoner, that slowly devolved into being a screamy-police-summoning slave wasn't too deep for me to realize, and shudder at.

Space Quest IV was scary af (and hard to get through as a fucking child)

Yes. I remember Andross himself wasn't scary but when I took on his second form it honestly freaked me out so much that I had to shut off the game. It took me so long to beat Area 6 and Star Wolf that I was ready for anything.

Also the robot from sector x threw me off too.

Half-Life. I was 4 years old and pretty good at navigating. I actually made it to the science experiment scene without help. Once the screen started flashing and you start teleporting into Xen, it really freaked me out. When the sirens went on I cried until my grandma came into the room.

I remember playing this and getting to him and just literally shitting my pants. What really scared me though was joining my first online session and having everyone throw ears at me.

Pic attached though is my first true cherry poppin scare.

The first for me remains one of the most scary. Opening a scroll in Rogue and hearing maniacal laughter in the distance always got me. I had no clue what it even meant but once it happened I knew my game was probably shot.

I recently learned that Re-Deads in those games are blind, and if you move really slowly past them they won't attack, and that only makes them rustle me a little more.

Some things in Rayman 2 scared me to death. The spiders and caterpillar things especially.

>> No.4127850

It was a PS1 game but I can't remember what the name of it was It was a scrolling shooter like Gradius, except submarines instead of space ships

I remember there was a big golem boss that you fought from above, and it scared the living shit out of me as a kid, when he was almost dead his eyes burst from their sockets in a gory mess, or something like that.
