An interesting fact; Contra was released in Europe under the title 'Probotector', and featured robot characters instead of people.

Normally the prospect of robots kicks ass. But I think this is the one case that I cannot approve.

Because it's such blatant and heavy-handed censorship.

Only during the 8 and 16 bit eras and on Nintendo and Sega systems.
Fucking Germany, ruining everything for the rest of us. Never understood why this and only this particular game series had to suffer such censure back then. But then again I had easy access to the US and Japanese Contra experience trough Famiclones (which were more common than actual NESs where I live) and imports (knew a friend who was friend with this kid that regularly went to America and bought stuff back we played and borrowed).

Actually, on an ALMOST Contra related note, I can think of another instance where something is superior to robots. And it has nothing to do with censorship.

Solbrain featured a robot protagonist. But Shatterhand is such a badass it nullifies my desire to play as a robot.

It's a man in a suite kind of deal actually, and based on a tokusatsu tv series.

He's a cyborg, if that.

>Steve Hermann, otherwise known as Shatterhand. A police officer who, after being maimed and having his hands crushed by a couple of Metal Command's cyborgs, undergoes a procedure where his lost limbs are rebuilt using cybernetics. Now armed with the most powerful pair of fists in the world, he embarks on a one-man mission to take on Metal Command and smash all of their freakin' robotic skulls in with his bare hands.

Germanfag here, I want you to know that I'm sorry, on behalf of my country.

Trust me, no video-game enthusiast in germany approves of censorship in any way. Almost everyone I know either pirates his stuff if it's cut, or just imports it from bongland like I do.

Though as a kid I had no problem with the robots because I didn't know better, like they say, ignorance is bliss

Seriously though, robots or not robots aside, most censorship in vidya is pretty stupid - you have to admit that.
